Mogwai - name that track...

...it starts with a solo electric piano - a motif not unlike the intro to I Only Have Eyes for You (Art Garfunkel version). I heard it played out last week, mixed with some classical Teremin track - amazing.

Track 3 off Rock Action?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 15:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thanks - I'll download it & see if it is...

THat should read Theremin above, by the way.

Jez (Jez), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 16:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

rock action is so lame...It should be called Rock and its lack of intensity

arc-de-ciel, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 11:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mogwai? Are they a complete waste of time or what!?!??

Dadaismus, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 11:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Rock Action" is great, but only if you CDR "My Father, My King" onto the end.

Heh.

mei (mei), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 11:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

They're pretty good but I find they give better interviews than they make music. Rock Action is fine if you're in the mood for it. And maybe the title is slightly ironic, n'est pas?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 11:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

I heart Mogwai, so there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 11:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

Actually, I listened to that track & it's not the one I was looking for - thanks anyway, Lynskey. It was what prompted the Rothko thread, btw.

Is it With Portfolio or Radar Maker, Jez?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thanks, but no...does Stanley Kubrick star with a Fender Rhodes type sound; if so, it could be this, judging by the tiny Amazon clip I've just heard.

Jez (Jez), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

well, My Father, My King is more than just a song...

arc-de-ciel, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

i dare you.
and if you didn't hear me (coz you won't), i'd like to repeat -- i dare you.

Rock Action is excellent, blows Come On Die Young so completely out of the water it's not funny.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 3 April 2003 03:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Blowing CODY out of the water is only like what, though, the easiest thing ever? You could knock that album over with a feather.

I still can't find my copy of Rock Action though -- may have even lost it in the move. The EP too. :-(

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 3 April 2003 04:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't get all the CODY hate -- I think it's a beautiful, evocative record, if a little rigorous in its "Mogwai-ness."

Clarke B., Thursday, 3 April 2003 04:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

CODY wonderful, Rock Action astounding. Next album therefore indescribably fantastic. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 April 2003 05:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Spectacular record yes, but about as wimpy as they get.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 3 April 2003 06:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

CODY is way better than Rock Action as far as I'm concerned, Rock Action was a pretty good album but here's hoping no more guest vocalists ever.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 3 April 2003 07:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

well, My Father, My King is more than just a song...
-- arc-de-ciel (xx...), April 2nd, 2003.

Explain?

Do you mean it's better than just a song?
Or it's a hymn too?
Or it's not even a song because no singing?

mei (mei), Thursday, 3 April 2003 07:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

CODY and RA, I find, are great in their own ways. May Nothing But Happiness Come Through Your Door is one damn fine tune. Good driving album.

New album, Happy Songs For Happy People, out in June.

Who shall start the Mogwai POX?

Bectha Helicon 1 would win. My fave is 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong.

Here's my vote FOR Mogwai:

I like that part of Rock Action that makes people fall asleep

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

I like wimpy Mogwai more than jock Mogwai.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 4 April 2003 03:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

agreed!

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 4 April 2003 03:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

two weeks pass...
mogwai - "happy songs for happy people" is available on soulseek and it is even mellower than "rock action"

william (william), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

'Rock Action' was my proper intro to Mogwai which isnt much good i know but i do like the album, it persisted so - even 'Dial:Revenge'. and they did blow me away live - loudest gig i've ever been to, altho standing right by the speakers at the front did help there.
