The END is nigh - and not unlike Noah, you are burdened with the awesome responsibility of saving some shit. Among the numerous other items, you're tasked with choosing 5 bands/musicians whose works can be saved when your cosmic ark departs for Humankind's new home. What are your choices?

Mine are:

1. Beethoven - Ludwig Van is the man!
2. James Brown - Got to bring the funk to Mars/Venus wherever
3. Rush - Just so I can listen to Cygnus X1 while travelling in space
4. Rolling Stones - I want to play "Satisfaction" for an alien
5. Miles Davis - I can't be without "Kind Of Blue"

Yep, only 5. It should be a difficult choice. Otherwise someone's gonna choose Hootie and The Blowfish.

1. My Band. We're friends!
2. Fugazi - they've earned it, and they'll be willing to help create a new community and all.
3. Neil Young - he even SANG about mother nature's silver seed. He's gonna be so damn happy, and lead us all in sing alongs.
4. Kelly Osbourne - cuz we belong together
5. The Donnas - cuz it might not work out with Kelly. Plus the rest of the guys in my band should get to date cool girls too.

My gut tells me: Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Fela Kuti, The Beatles, and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Ween sneaks onboard just as the ark is lifting off though, 'cause they're sneaky little fuckers.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 12:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, reasons too, my bad:

Hendrix - he was already half-way to outer space, mang; besides "Third Stone from the Sun" might as well be a soundtrack for interplanetary travel

Miles Davis - I swear "Circle in the Round" is an audial galactic star-map, and extra-terrestrials need to hear "Files de Kilmanjaro", they told me so

Fela Kuti - cause god-damn it's funky! (plus rhythm = the first music, so in a roundabout way this is like a roots-of-music thingy)

The Beatles - [this is the "appeasing the canon" answer, I actually would prob'ly send like Ludwig Van or Zappa instead]

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - you've heard his voice, you know why

Ween - 'cause they deserve to live!!!!

Just as a population of less than 30 is not enough of a genepool to re-perpetuate a species...5 is not even close to enough to re-perpetuate EVERY genre of music.
I'd take cell samples from a long ass list of musicians (exhume a few as needed) and carry the a suitcase full of thousands of test-tubes full of the stored brillance of Earths finest musical minds and souls. Then I shall generate multiple copies of each (of both genders); and thus populate an entire WORLD with the manifold spawn of humanities musical crème-de-la-crème!
BWAAAHAAAHAAAHAAAHAAAAHAAAAHAAAA!!

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 21:53 (five years ago) link

They'd all be symphony orchestras or choirs, cos that way I get to save as many people as possible.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 21:56 (five years ago) link

You're saving their collected works, not the artists themselves. Please adhere to the ridiculous thread premise!!
