Back in the mid 80s, when 99,99999 per cent of music had a melody, of course I didn't mind that much bout melodies. I mean, they were there in all music anyway, and all there was to do was separate the good (=harmonically complex) ones from the bad (=harmonically simple) ones.

It was the dominance of rap and house/dance in the hitlists of the late 80s that really started to piss me off.

A simple melody can be good if backed by interesting chords.

And anyway, well, sometime around 96-97, I discovered I didn't really hate all techno. There was even a lot of techno without melodies (although not without harmonies, which is even more important to me) that I liked.

Orbital's "In Sides" was the album that really turned me into techno, but I liked "Leftism" even before that.

it's not very interesting and took the middle ground when an awful lot more arresting things were happening in techno and dance music overall (not least drum & bass), it bored me then and does now...

could be i'm reading more into it than was actually implied but... or do you really mean that you've never heard any (western) classical music the melodies of which you've liked, Geir??

No, not at all. But there have been very few "classical pieces" from 1900 or later that I like. In fact, I think Barber's "Adagio" is the only exception I can think of.

I put "classical" in ""-signs because the truly classical composers of the 20th century were called Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson, Cole Porter, George Gerswhin, Irving Berlin etc. etc.
