Little Brother "The Listening" - the best new hip hop that sounds like it's from prime period 94-95

all you complainers out there saying there's nothing new out there that's not jiggy/ blingy or undie-i-stuff-way-too-many-words-in-my-mouth-let's-hope-i-don't-choke shit must check this group out. they're from North Carolina and are put out by ABB Records. the beats are highly reminiscent of the best of Jay Dee (ATCQ, Slum Village, Common). the lyrics are smart but not preachy and they're not afraid to sing (in a good way like Mos Def)

you can check out a few mp3s at http://www.littlebrothermusic.com/

A-freakin'-men. Love love love this record. Got the hook-up on it about 4 months ago, and haven't stopped with it since. Which is high praise from me -- I don't usually listen to anything more than 5 times.

I wouldn't exactly call it the best hip hop album out there.

I'm throwing all objectivity out the window on this one. It makes me feel warm and squishy inside, the way De La used to.

i like it (esp. the beats), but too many shout outs to native tongues and other old skool artists reinforce the listening-as-nostalgia novelty vibe. with that said, it's great to listen to while taking in some herb or after a long nite/ morning at the clubs.

i'd say that the beats are more like j dilla than de la, except the drums are even more minimal. and i like 9th wonder's remix of nas' god's son, even if the voice and rhythm are mismatched at times.
