sharpdressed pillpopping r&b citykids --> blurry bescarved shambolic shag-cut dirt farmers... evolution or devolution?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 12 May 2003 21:28 (twenty years ago) link

evolution! less pills more dirt = playing loose, space to breath, more room for rod to get his sam cooke suit fitted

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 12 May 2003 21:36 (twenty years ago) link

I disagree...I suppose I just prefer the fresher sound of the earlier stuff. To bring the two together, I noticed (for the first time) the other day that there's a reference to Afterglow in one of the repeat choruses of Stay With ME.

Jez (Jez), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 11:59 (twenty years ago) link

The Faces had Rod, which was a good thing - just one problem, they didn't have Steve Marriott.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:01 (twenty years ago) link

I agree with Yancey (hey, Yancey): Faces beat out Small Faces (though I have a live Small Faces rekkid that is pure joy, just 'cuz Steve Marriot is so amped up all the time). I like Ron Wood's playing, and for me Rod's voice beats out Steve Marriot's. And I like the feel of Ooh La La (the album, not the song): Kinda sloppy but still real, real rockin' and soulful, especially on tracks like "Glad and Sorry," "If I'm on the Late Side" (one of my favorite Rod performances) and "Borstal Boys." And even though it's been co-opted by many a corporate entity, "Ooh La La" is a pretty great song (it's placement in Rushmore is one of the best examples of music used in cinema, in my opinion).

What about Steampacket?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 12:54 (twenty years ago) link

I've never heard Steampacket, but I've decided that Every Picture Tells a Story just might be the best album ever, and that his backing band on that disc might be the best band ever. I need to think about this more tho.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 13:46 (twenty years ago) link

it's all good up to the first few solo rod stewart albums. might as well throw the jeff beck ones he sang on in too, tho they are not as good as faces by a long shot IMO

g (graysonlane), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:23 (twenty years ago) link

Steampacket is cool for having Rod Stewart, Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger, and Long John Baldry, but I don't think they ever really recording anything all that cool. If they ever officially recorded anything at all.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:32 (twenty years ago) link

Check out Ronnie Lane's post-Faces work with Slim Chance. There's one called You Never Can Tell that I enjoy quite a bit. Covers, originals, some BBC stuff. RL was Small Faces'/ Faces' secret weapon.

Will (will), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:36 (twenty years ago) link

What Will said. I have to say Small Faces, on balance, since their strike-to-miss ratio was much higher (particularly from mid-66 onwards,) but Ronnie Lane came into his own on the Faces records. I mean, "Debris?" Mightn't it be the greatest song ever?

I like the Small Faces, but the best of the Faces' material is some of my favourite rock music ever, and Rod's first few solo albums might be better still. Also worth a mention: Python Lee Jackson's 'In A Broken Dream'!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 20:22 (twenty years ago) link

The Small Faces are one of my favoritest group ever. In the early 90's I became obsessed with them, collecting all the rare b-sides and stray tracks from the Immediate years etc. They were all wonderful musicians and had a superbly infectious take on the mod/R&B sound, they just radiated joy.

Strangely, while I believe Rod Stewart is a better singer than Steve Marriott, I don't own a single Faces lp (though I have a couple of Rod's solo albums and obv Every Picture Tells A Story is a k-classic). Yet I have five Humble Pie albums. I don't even really like Humble Pie that much. I guess their records were always cheaper and easier to find here in the States. I guess I sort of like both singers equally. I love the way on something like Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, Marriott could easily flit from sweetly humble songs like "Afterglow" to the cockney send-up of "Lazy Sunday" to soulful strutting on "Rollin' Over". And of course Robert Plant completely ripped him off.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 15 May 2003 20:14 (twenty years ago) link

I've never liked the Small Faces, even though I think I own every official album. It's just a little too whimsical for my tastes. But I was always convinced that I was wrong about them, so I'd pick up yet another record hoping it would finally click. And to this point it still hasn't...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 15 May 2003 20:18 (twenty years ago) link

I just think it's all in the presentation, the personality they radiate, especially through Marriott. Also, Mclagan's organ playing is such a distinctive part of the sound; if you don't like it you might not warm to them.

I got a couple of twofer cd's recently which feature Rod's first 4 solo albums and after careful consideration have decided they piss on the Small Faces from a great height.

A question which is u&k. Whatever happened to Martin Quittenton as there's very little on the net to show what happened to him after working with Rod?

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 20:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Doesn't R.Wood sing on 'Ooh la la' though?

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 20:26 (nineteen years ago) link

I think the first two Humble Pie records are as good as the cream of the Small Faces>Faces>solo Stewart material. They have a sharp folk edge. Their version of "Desparation" is anthemic.

If Rod decided to sing exclusively for the Faces then we would be talking about Faces records like we talk about the Stones. As it is, they produced some incredible rock tunes but the records are a little spotty. I believe the Faces were suspicious that Rod saved his best stuff for his solo records.

Justin Farrar (Justin Farrar), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 21:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Nick, I believe that is Ron Wood. Other acoustic songs: "Richmond," "Flags and Banners," "Glad and Sorry." Lane's stuff with the post-Faces Slim Chance is quite nice, too, as is his stuff on the Townshend/Lane 'Rough Mix.'

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 01:06 (nineteen years ago) link

God, the first Humble Pie album is tremendous! That's not what I was listening to the other night (3rd, self-titled album), but Justin's post inspired me to pull it out tonight. I wouldn't agree with his equation (I still like the original Small Faces quartet best of all), but man they were so good in the beginning. There's a beautifully wide instrumental palette on this stuff which can belied by Marriott's infatuation with volume. Man, he loved to play loud. I think that's why I like him. Those rare surviving Small Faces live recordings are almost funny, he's got his amps turned up so loud. But yeah, piano, organ, sitar, and copious amounts of tabla all make subtle contributions to the sound of these songs.

What a monster rhythm section Ridley and Shirley were!! Easily one of my top five hard rock rhythm sections of the 70s. For a few shining albums, these guys were right below Jones/Bonham and Butler/War and precious few others...

Rod Stewart Confirms The Faces Reunion Is On

Published Thursday, 13th November, 2008

Rod Stewart has confirmed his former band The Faces are back together for a reunion.

It was claimed at the start of the week that the remaining members of the group - Ronnie Wood, Ian MCLagan, Kenney Jones and Rod - were to reform for a 2009 tour. It's thought Stewart's bassist will stand in for late bass player Ronnie Lane.

"Yes, absolutely," Rod replied when asked if the reunion rumours were true. "We have our first rehearsal on Monday. It will be next summer and I am looking forward to it. It'll be great."

"Ronnie Wood is up for it. I think he feels great. He is full of energy and very excited. We try not to mix our family problems with work. I'll see him Monday."

""ronnie lane was sort of the heart of the faces to me"". Almost word for word what "Rod the Mod" is quoted as saying when Ron left the Faces, and pretty much true I reckon. I`m an original fan of all the line ups since the Small Faces had a residency at the Cavern in the Town in 65, and a real nerd completist. I was lucky enough to see Faces and Humble Pie on the same bill in 72 and Marriott showed Rodders how it was done in no uncertain terms!!
The beaky one lost it for me after Atlantic Crossing and if he`s bringing that "Great American Songbook" malarky to the table I`ll pass thanks....

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/may/25/faces-reform-mick-hucknall

Simply Red vocalist Hucknall is rock'n'roll enough to step into original front man Rod Stewart's shoes, insists Ronnie Wood

Mark Brown, arts correspondent
guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 25 May 2010

They were as celebrated for rock'n'roll excess as for their influential music, and counted among their members two of the most notorious bad boys of their era. But while fans of the Faces will welcome news that the band is to reform, they may be left scratching their heads at its new lead singer, former Simply Red frontman and silky-voiced ladies' man Mick Hucknall.

Speaking to the Guardian, Ronnie Wood, who went on to join the Rolling Stones, insisted that Hucknall was rock'n'roll enough to step into Rod Stewart's tartan stack heels. "His band aren't but he is. Mick's a big Faces fan and it comes out when he sings, it's a kind of relief for him because he can let loose. Mick's range is like Rod's vocal range was in the seventies."

The three original members – Wood, Kenney Jones on drums and Ian McLagan on keyboard – will be joined by Hucknall and former Sex Pistol bassist Glen Matlock for a gig at this summer's inaugural Vintage at Goodwood festival. They then hope to tour next January.

The Faces are an important and some think undervalued piece in the complicated alcohol-sodden rock jigsaw of the 1960s and 1970s, formed by three evacuees from the Small Faces and Wood and Stewart from The Jeff Beck Group. With hits like Stay With Me, I'd Rather Go Blind and Had Me a Real Good Time they were one of the most successful bands of the early 1970s and particularly successful live where, with their brand of boozy, good-time camaraderie, they bonded with the predominantly male audiences.

The band have been rehearsing with Hucknall, and, said Wood, "it sounded so good we thought we've got to take it on the road. It was sounding fresher, if anything, and more focused."

That might have something to do with the bandmembers not being up to their eyes in drugs and drink. Wood, who these days declares himself "clean and serene", admitted: "It makes a big difference, yes, to actually know what you're playing."

Jones said one secret of the Faces was that they all acted as themselves. "We played it like it was and people either liked it or they didn't. The audience was on stage and we were with the audience, it was like a big party and it will be again."

The band members still hope that Stewart might one day be persuaded to join them. However, "he's touring and promoting and it's impossible to get any sense from his management," said Wood.

Vintage at Goodwood (13-15 August) is the brainchild of designer Wayne Hemingway and is meant to be something new on the summer schedule - a sort of festival for people who feel too old at Glastonbury or who can't face being camped out in a muddy field. That's reflected in the line-up. As well as Faces there will be Buzzcocks, The Noisettes and Heaven 17. It is also meant to be a celebration of "British cool" from the 1940s to 1980s and there will also be a carefully curated schedule of events combining art, design and fashion.
