Actually, since the Driv-By Truckers (who are probably younger, and definitely at least 5000 times better, than Pearl Jam) have TOURED with Skynyrd, the latter question is moot. According to the Truckers' *Southern Rock Opera* album, the former is moot, too; Skynyrd and Young actually really respected each other, to the point that Neil was supppsedly a pall-bearer at one of the post-plane-crash funerals!

Another question for them, though:

I'm as free as a bird now; how bout you?

p.s.) One of things they've always done to reach out to the African-American community is having one of the funkiest rhythm sections in the history of white rock, by the way. That song where they told George Wallace "boo boo boo" didn't hurt either, if you ask me.

You might also consider asking them about the N.R.A., since "Saturday Night Special" is probably the most pro-gun-control rock song ever.

Not to mention about the R.I.A.A., since "Working for MCA" is one of the most anti-music-industry rock songs ever. Whatever you do, don't act like they're a dumb hick band. If you do, you're a fucking idiot.

Did anyone catch the Skynyrd special on VH1 "Uncivil War" or something like that? It was aired only a few times, but it was great. Jake Tapper went on the road to talk with the surviving members, and besides Artimus Pyle threatening Garry Rossington (to Tapper, not Rossington, obv), there was other outrageousness. One of which was Johnny Van Zant shooting snakes in his backyard with a shotgun. He was cackling as he fired off rounds. Tapper was visibly scared shitless. It amused Van Zant. Creeeepy.

I'm an active anti-fascist and I founded a performance group whose mission is to "Artistically combat hatred and intolerence" in 2000. Before that I worked with at risk, emotionally disturbed children and teens in the juvenile detention system.
I also did educational children's theatre, often in Baltimore's inner city schools and I worked and ran programs at a children's museum, also in downtown Baltimore.
I don't know if you'd count any of that as outreach, purhaps an attempt at bridging the palpable racial divide in my home town?

Actually James,
I am just getting ready to do a reprisal of my award winning one person show Welcome to Baltimore, Hon. In it I examine the stereo-types and classism assosiated with Baltimore's national white trash image.
I use the term "redneck" to define ignorant, violent, racist people who choose to be that way, in fact many will use the term to describe themselves, especially when waving their confederate flags. This has more to do with geography and personal aesthetic than economic strata, considering many "necks" make quite a lot more money then I do. I leave the issue of a soul up to a wiser Don, then I.
