Janes Addiction New Album

Found it last wednesday on Kazaa .'Strays' Is a very good album. Pehaps not quite in the class of 'Nothings Shocking' or 'Ritual De Lo Habitual' but a very good album. The guitar sound is updated which is most pleasing as its not simply a rehash of former glories. The guitars are rawer and crunchier. Its a more mature work, but with moments of their trademark chaos. Dont be frightened by the word 'mature'. They havent gone AOR , guitars are infact heavier on some tracks than before. Its not an overly commercial album so it does need a good few listens. I wasn't sure at first but ive played it every day since I got it, and for once its great to know a comeback album isn't an embarrassment.
Shame it will be lost on the public who will buy Limp Bizkit & Linkin Park instead. Their loss.

Steven Walker, Monday, 26 May 2003 01:38 (twenty years ago) link

Downloaded the album this evening. I have to agree its very good. I really was not expecting much from it at all but i am impressed after a few listens. 'Hypersonic' stands out. The guitars are heavier on some songs, but theres slower and poppier songs too. Overall its quite impressive. Wish all comebacks were as good as this.
Just one thing, Isn't the album called "Hypersonic" and not "Strays"?

Kevin Brown, Monday, 26 May 2003 03:32 (twenty years ago) link

was intended as "hypersonic" when they were shopping it, but changed to "strays" after they signed to capitol. definitely an improvement. and the album is surprisingly good. they didn't do any of the overcompensation that sometimes befalls "comeback" albums i.e. showing off their "up-to-the-minute" studio prowess and turning everything to eleven. a lot of subtlety on the record and that's one place whenere jane's has always shined.

Eric A, eternal hero forever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 May 2003 14:45 (twenty years ago) link

Great album. One of the great unexpected comebacks. Were disappointing live at Leeds last year so I was not expecting much but this is a terrific album. Guitars are heavy in places but restrained. No showing off his chops by Dave Navarro. Perys voice seems a touch lower not as ozzylike, Perkins drumming is great as usual. Not sure who is on bass. Might not be a commercial album in this day and age but certainly a few songs do stand out as obvious singles.

Robyn, Monday, 26 May 2003 21:23 (twenty years ago) link

Not sure who plays bass. It isnt Martyn Lenoble from Porno For Pyros.
Yes, the album is great.

Barry, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 02:08 (twenty years ago) link

It's certainly 100X better than Porno For Pyros and the subsequent solo albums. I liked PFP 2nd album but this is infinitely better.

Gerry Ronald, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:43 (twenty years ago) link

I thought the 1st Porno For Pyros album was better. It had more tunes for a start.

Possibly because I wasn't expecting much, I was wowed by what I heard. Strays is on par with either of the other two studio albums, if not slightly better. As much as Navarro has acted like a meathead for the last decade, I'd forgotten what he can do with the guitar given the right material. And whoever the replacement bassist is definitely has his Eric Avery impersonation down solid. If you didn't know Eric had bowed out of the reunion, you'd never be able to tell the difference. Perkins is tight as usual, and Perry's vocals are more thematic and melodic than in the past (instead of shouty and choppy). At this point it might be tough for them to win over a legion of new fans, but the old ones should be rejoicing over Strays.

Jane's Addiction died in 1991. I am not interested in encouraging necrophilia.

Aw, Ned. You're bringing me down, brother.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Monday, 16 June 2003 02:12 (twenty years ago) link

It's a sore point and to be fair there are other reunions I haven't minded, notably the Chameleons (whose own breakup was a sudden, unexpected jolt of emotion that took over a decade to finally settle). But Jane's were enough of heroes to me that when they said they specifically they were breaking up and calling it quits -- and making reference to wanting to avoid being like the crap classic rock acts that were trying to reclutter up things in the late eighties -- the younger me rather wanted to believe. So seeing the various 'relapses' since then -- and seeing Navarro in particular turn into a wastoid clown -- is fundamentally depressing, and I'm not interested in indulging Farrell in anything he's done since, especially when Porno for Pyros turned into a weak replacement like it did. That's why Eric A is still my hero as mentioned above. He called it quits and has NOT looked back, and seeing as his bass is nine-tenths of why so many of those songs work as perfectly as they do -- my god, is the start of "Summertime Rolls" just one of those moments that is PERFECT -- I stick with my stance. Grr, grr! Etc. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 June 2003 02:22 (twenty years ago) link

I see where you're coming from. Were the Pixies to ever reunite, I would certainly be just as bitter as you are now. Never having been an obsessive Jane's fan, though, I'm free to enjoy the rebirth.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Monday, 16 June 2003 02:26 (twenty years ago) link

until and unless somebody is able to physically prevent Perry Farrell from writing lyrics or from singing the ones we've already failed to stop him from writing, a Jane's Addiction reunion cannot fail to be anything less that uninteresting

NB "Been Caught Stealing" the miraculous exemption here

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 16 June 2003 02:28 (twenty years ago) link

I think Chuck E's comment in Stairway to Hell about how the most interesting Farrell lyrics were the French ones sums it up.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 June 2003 02:30 (twenty years ago) link

I never went to a reunion show or picked up a reunion album because Eric A. was not involved. He was one of the biggest reasons why I started playing instruments when I was young.

I have to side with Ned on this one.

Totally.

stevo (stevo), Monday, 16 June 2003 03:33 (twenty years ago) link

I think "Jane says, "Have you seen my wig around? I can't make it without it." is one of the greatest opening lines ever. I'm not a big fan, though. I'm a fan of their fans.

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 16 June 2003 03:48 (twenty years ago) link

Oh,except it's not the opening line. I really should google the lyrics before I make these big dumb pronouncements. Well, "I'm through with Sergio/he treats me like a ragdoll" is pretty good, too.

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 16 June 2003 03:52 (twenty years ago) link

I think my junkie (at the time) roommate gave all her furniture away to Sergio and his family when we moved from LA back to NYC in 1990.

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 16 June 2003 03:53 (twenty years ago) link

just heard the new single "just because". seems good. perry's always struck me as a great rock vocalist, rather than a lyricist, but this song seems to keep the lyrics simple, direct, and he just lets his vocals do the work. i like it. its on their official website. i was never around to experience jane's the first time round, and i'm only familiar with some of their earlier work, and i havent heard the new album other than "just because", but i think people should give it a chance, cos its a good single (blows most current mainstream rock out of the water). if the rest of the album is this good, they have a winner IMHO.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Monday, 23 June 2003 16:29 (twenty years ago) link

But can anyone see it selling a million or 2 copies? Can't see MTV playing them as often as Justin or Linkin Park or Metallica. Kids today probably wont be interested as they're not nu-metal. Even the much hyped critics darlings Queens Of the Stone Age dont have a platinum album and they have a video with Dave Grohl always on.
It's hard to see how a new janes album will sell in todays climate. Especially considering the Lollapalooza tickets aren't selling well.
The revived LOLLAPALOOZA festival has had its opening date cancelled due to "technical and logistical" difficulties - though there are rumours poor ticket sales are to blame.

Ray, Monday, 23 June 2003 18:04 (twenty years ago) link

That's a shame. Altough they dug their own grave price wise ($50 for lawn seats for the Houston area gig). Perhaps the bad thing is that they can't get into big venues like the original did, and offer general admission for standing room only.

PS love the Marilyn Monroe authograph logo. And "Just Because" sounds like PiL with Steve Vai (in a good way).

Ryan P, Tuesday, 24 June 2003 01:29 (twenty years ago) link

For many reasons I still hold fond memories of 1994's lineup. But 1991 was still something pretty cool, if only because it started it all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 02:18 (twenty years ago) link

I missed the first one but I really wanted to go. '94 was excellent but I think '95 was my favourite. That was the best Sonic Youth set I've ever seen, and Pavement were at the peak of their powers. *sighs*

Janes Addiction's new bassist = Chris Chaney
Chris Chaney's previous gig = Alanis Morrisette

Alanis Morrisette's new bassist = Eric Avery
Eric Avery's previous gig = I think we all know what that was

"Just Because" is about a billion times better than I expected. Fuckinay I love reformed bands blowing my pre-conceptions about what they're gonna sound like without key members by rocking the fuck OUT!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 19:49 (twenty years ago) link

I haven't heard the record, but I haven't heard Kettle Whistle either. I saw Jane's twice—once at one of the Hollywood Palladium shows where parts of Gift were filmed (Christmastime 1990) and once at Lollapalooza I in New Jersey, and I stand with Ned Raggett on this one. Without Eric, and especially in the face of how emphatic Perry was re the original breakup (he was positively Albini-esque about wanting to go out while they were on top)...nah, they can go fuck themselves. I saw a clip from the video for "Just Because" a week or so ago, and it looked like Perry was stealing dance moves from Gary Cherone. Also, he was wearing a shiny suit.

The second time I saw Jane's Addiction, which was after Ritual de lo Habitual had come out but before Lolapalooza, Eric A looked like he freakin' hated the rest of the band. He came in from the opposite side of the stage and played with his back to the band most of the set.

A couple of times after songs when Perry would be doing some smacked out spiel, I swear it look like Eric A wanted to kill him. It was pretty obvious that he was not very happy.

All that said, they still sounded pretty good.

earlnash, Wednesday, 9 July 2003 21:40 (twenty years ago) link

Ugh. That album cover is so disappointing. Fortunately, the songs are still great.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 21:47 (twenty years ago) link

I'm with the reunion, uh, haterz here (go Ned!) I've kinda paid cursory attention to post-Jane's things like the Deconstruction album - which has a couple GREAT songs on it, Avery is a surprisingly capable lyricist - and the odd Porno for Pyros or solo Perry track, but I just can't cut them any slack for the reasons Ned stated. I knew when I saw the first Porno for Pyros show at Castaic Lake (w pre-signing Rage Against the Machine opening) that it was all over, no one to reign in Perry's bad ideas/ego and Navarro's incredibly tepid RHCP playing was so depressing... Eric is the only one whose maintained any kind of respectability.

That cover is fucking hideous, as well.

two weeks pass...
I finally broke down and bought this record last weekend. After having played it several times, I can honestly say that "Strays" doesn't suck. But considering that this is a Jane's Addiction album, the fact that all I can say about it is that is doesn't suck is a little sad.

The guitars sound pretty good and Navarro seems to have finally found his footing again after some pretty embarrassing moments during the 90's. I can't really say anything bad about Steve Perkins' drumming, he's great as usual.

Perry's vocals are a little disappointing. Again, they're not terrible but it's as if some of the menace has been taken out of his voice. Perry sounds a lot more radio-friendly than he has in the past. The only reason I like them at all is because in places he almost sounds like his old self.

It's been discussed at length on other threads exactly what Eric Avery meant to this band so there's no need to get into here again but if anyone ever doubted the giant impact that he had on Jane's Addiction's sound, then "Strays" should set you straight. This is the first Jane's album that doesn't have a single memorable bassline. So many of their greatest songs can easily be identified by a signature bass motif. "Mountain Song", "Whores", "Ted, Just Admit It", "Been Caught Stealing", "Summertime Rolls", "Ain't No Right"...

...On "Strays", Chris Chaney's playing is competent but never threatens to capture your imagination for a second. Any session player could have sat in and performed the same job. Chaney fails to put his stamp on any song. Eric's lines were like an anchor, a solid foundation which gave the others a chance to venture off into places unknown and in many cases, defined the song itself.

Maybe it's just me, or the passage of time or maybe the world that Jane's Addiction used to rule over just doesn't exist anymore. I remember when this band used to sound and feel dangerous. I remember hearing their songs on the radio or seeing the videos on TV and feeling as though we'd gotten away with something. It was as if through some oversight, someone had accidentally let this subversive band of freaks gain access to the airwaves. If our parents, teachers or the guys in suits had any real inkling of what was going on, they woulda shut the whole thing down. That's the Jane's Addiction that I love(d). That band would never have made an album like "Strays".

Jane's Addiction records have always been full of an explosive energy. When the wall of sound comes crashing down after the intro to "Ocean Size", that feeling is unexplicable. "Strays" doesn't have a single moment like that.

Having said all of this, I'm still in favour of the reunion. I know that a lot of people disagree with it but I think it's good, especially for people who discovered this band after 1991, to have a chance to see them and experience, at least in some way, what made them so great. I caught them in their current incarnation last year and even without Eric, they are still a force to be reckoned with live.

"Strays" is a pretty good album. There are a number of bands out there for whom this would represent a career highlight. It's just that when the band in question is Jane's Addiction, pretty good represents a significant step backwards. I couldn't help but notice some of the laudatory remarks for it on this thread. For those of you who believe that this is a great Jane's Addiction album, go home, listen to the old ones and cry for what once was.

I just got it this weekend. I like it. It rocks. But I harbor a fear of listening to too much Janes Addiction, "Nothings Shocking" was playing on the night I had a very bad trip and I can't listen to it to this day. So only a little Janes at a time is ok.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 11:43 (twenty years ago) link

Only been growing this one for about a week now and I am starting to really like it. However J-Rock pretty much said it I am afraid. I was lucky enough to catch and tape 2 different live versions (Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel). The guys were looking as badass as ever, especially on Kimmel once Perry recovered from the very 1st line of Just Because. They also did an A-1-AWESOME job on one of their top 10 bests: Stop!

Strays is entertaining, I love Price I Pay and The Riches. When Superhero kicked off I thought I was about to hear a cover of N.I.B.
True Nature is very good also. I still can't help but think of Nuno bettencourt (Extreme) when closely inspecting the tone on a lot of Dave's guitars. I also get the dreadful feeling that they were overlistening to their own classic material in attempt to "do it again". They come close but it is a tad bit too commercial for Jane's Addiction. Nevertheless, I still preach the good word, in spite of my deep respect for the choice that Eric has made. After all he actually knows these guys. Being in a band is like a marriage times 4 and musicians in general are alien so I don't judge. It is amazing that ANY band ever succeeds in my book and like all the greats I could never decide which guy in JA I would replace when I got my time machine working.
