Might as well just start the one thread. I'd say Classic for Don Caballero - American Don(thats all Ive heard) and Tomorrow I'll Run Faster by Sweep The Leg Johnny. Not heard any subsequent spin offs. So Search & Destroy.

Carmichael, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 02:47 (twenty years ago) link

Sweep the Leg 2cd live split with Rumah Sakit is most excellent...

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 02:50 (twenty years ago) link

Uh, I'd be surprised if we didn't do Don Cab already, and both bands probably deserve their own threads, but uh classic anyway.

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 02:51 (twenty years ago) link

the best line in karate kid was when the one kid yelled 'get him a body bag', after johnny swept the leg.

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 04:05 (twenty years ago) link

Damon Che is a freak drummer, he can really play. Don Cab is good music to listen to when lifting weights.

I never knew Sweep the Leg Johnny had anything to do with Don Caballero.

earlnash, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 11:59 (twenty years ago) link

they don't.

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 12:57 (twenty years ago) link

What is the best album by each band to start with?

King Eddie, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:18 (twenty years ago) link

Then why are we doing them together then? It hought we did Sweep The Leg Johnny somewhere.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:24 (twenty years ago) link

I like Don Cab's "What Burns Never Returns" best of all. Their records are all pretty solid, if you like such a band.

Still haven't picked up "American Don", but that one is as a trio.

Don't know Sweep the Leg... at all, never heard them.

earlnash, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:27 (twenty years ago) link

I did both as I wanted to avoid starting 2 threads and hogging the board. I also search for a C/D on both and couldn't find any. American Don is probably my favourite album i've purchased this year and I wanted to find out more. Also I just bought Sto Cazzo! by STLJ and wanted to find out more.
Are Bellini and Check Engine as good as their parent bands?

Carmichael, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:37 (twenty years ago) link

american don is my fave don cab rekkid.

bellini is at times great!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:39 (twenty years ago) link

Sweep the Leg Johnny is/was great, if merely for the saxophone inclusion. The only one I own is Sto Cazzo! but I remember Tomorrow We Will Run Faster being pretty good.

And yup, What Burns Never Returns is probably the best Don Cab album, though Don Cab 2 is pretty interesting as the intersection between pure rawk Don Cab and experimental Don Cab. I have a copy of the Bellini cd and haven't listened to it much. It's ok, but fairly different from Don Cab, what with the vocals and all. The guitar style is pretty different too.

NA. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:40 (twenty years ago) link

Not familiar with Sweep The Leg Johnny at all however Don Caballero 2 is a good album. Not heard Bellini but apparently they're better than Storm & Stress. Not sure who is in what group though.

Franklin Ambrose (Franklin Ambrose), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 23:08 (twenty years ago) link

Sweep The Leg Johnny: I like Sto Cazzo! the best, although I've never heard the first album.

Don Caballero: All their albums are great, but What Burns Never Returns is my fave, followed closely by American Don. As for side projects, I like Storm & Stress' Under Thunder and Fluorescent Light (although I warn everyone to stay away from the self-titled). The Bellini album is ok, but I never got into it as much as I thought I would.

(btw, Ian and Erich from DC are in Storm & Stress, and Damon is in Bellini and was in Thee Speaking Canaries.)

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 23:51 (twenty years ago) link

storm&stress and Bellini are no longer bands.

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 23:54 (twenty years ago) link

I would not warn people away from the self-titled Storm & Stress record.

Don Cab (and S&S) imploded in three-way personality diference hell.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 29 May 2003 00:11 (twenty years ago) link

Sweep the Leg Johnny is cool I guess, they definitely have their own sound. I heard one recording of theirs on vinyl at a friend's house and remember thinking it was really cool, then not being that impressed by them live on their final tour (though the sax player definitely has some charisma).

I like Don Cab much better...StLJ's drummer nails all the meter changes, but he's not that, um, good or interesting.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 29 May 2003 00:13 (twenty years ago) link

Colin, not so 3-way anymore: Eric and Ian live together in my neighborhood.

hstencil, Thursday, 29 May 2003 00:17 (twenty years ago) link

Hard times make for strange bedfellows.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 29 May 2003 02:28 (twenty years ago) link

(Also Kevin Shea of S&S has worked with Ian since as well, but things were ugly in both bands.)

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 29 May 2003 02:32 (twenty years ago) link

StLJ's drummer nails all the meter changes, but he's not that, um, good or interesting.

Well, compared to Damon Che, yeah. But on the whole I think he's a great drummer, and really fun to watch. And I'm shocked that you didn't think much of them live— they're easily in my top 5 best live acts I've ever seen.

Nick Mirov (nick), Thursday, 29 May 2003 03:07 (twenty years ago) link

Sweep are one of may absolute faves live. Definitely in the top five for me as well as I saw 'em twice and was completely blown away both times. They never really captured that sound on a record, but on stage they were INTENSE. Sot Cazzo is a fine record too. Production is a bit weak on all of them (first and last albums, esp.) but Sot Cazzo has this raw sound that really works for the band.

Plus! Sax should be encouraged in more rock bands! Sweep is about as close as it gets to my dream band where metal riffs and free jazz skronking collide. \m/

And Don Cab ain't bad.

original bgm, Thursday, 29 May 2003 03:48 (twenty years ago) link

(yeah Colin I think the contention in s&s wasn't between Ian and Kevin.)

hstencil, Thursday, 29 May 2003 04:00 (twenty years ago) link

what's the name of ian's new band? i saw them play not too long ago and the name's escaping me...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 29 May 2003 14:06 (twenty years ago) link

Battles. Where'd you see 'em at, Yanc3? I saw their first show (with Panthers and Les Savvy Fav) back in December at Northsix (not in September as reported in Pitchfork) and it was just kinda okay. Saw their third show about a month ago at Galapagos, and it was TONS better.

hstencil, Thursday, 29 May 2003 14:12 (twenty years ago) link

That's it! I saw them at a party in the 'Burg. I don't remember much of the show at all. I was too drunk. I think they played with Parts & Labor? Hmm...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 29 May 2003 14:18 (twenty years ago) link

I think maybe that was their second show, that I couldn't go to? Something like that. Anyway, they've improved a lot, and I can't wait to see 'em again (didn't wanna pay to see 'em on that Ipecac night thingy at Irving).

hstencil, Thursday, 29 May 2003 14:22 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, I want to see them again too. I never saw Don Cab live! Woe is me!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 29 May 2003 14:27 (twenty years ago) link

whoa dude. I saw 'em like 10 times in different incarnations from like 1993 to about 2000.

hstencil, Thursday, 29 May 2003 14:29 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, I wish I had. A combo of them not playing around me, and when they did play other things came up or I was just plain lazy.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 29 May 2003 14:32 (twenty years ago) link

Downloaded Don Caballero II. I liked what i've heard from it so far.
Cant find any Bellini , Storm & Stress or Check Engine.

Artist: Don Caballero
Title: World Class Listening Problem

I "saw" Don Cab like two years ago and left after one song. It was Che and all these douchey rocker guys--I wonder if they are the same people who are on this record. Anyone else find it odd that Relapse is releasing this?

yes, it is the same creta bourzia guys.

the cover art looks like a battles release!

sweet, cheers. sweep were an incredible band. I miss 'em.

The first full US tour i ever did (back in '99), we did a few weeks with STLJ. Really nice guys. Great band.

Nate Carson, Friday, 27 March 2009 22:04 (fifteen years ago) link

Would loved to have seen them live.

I was working out and listening to my mp3 player and I have come to the conclusion that Don Caballero is like indie rock for body builders. I was listening to What Burns Never Returns and got laughing thinking of the notion of body builders getting really amped up listening to Don Cab and then going out side and flipping a Miyata.

Nostalgia'd my way into this thread and this video. I was at this show with a bunch of college friends and Sweep are forever legendary in our minds for this moment (watch until the end or ffwd).

no :(

they weren't as good but were still fun. less punk, more "theatrical"?

na (NA), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 01:16 (five years ago) link

See also the band Check Engine with Steve and Chris from Sweep, one album iirc, very good indeed.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 11:41 (five years ago) link

True story. When I lived in a far west suburb back in 2001 I was in a laundromat one night and these dudes walked in with a friend with a camera and started taking what were clearly promo pictures. It was Check Engine. Even though I'd heard of STLJ at that point I'd never seen them to know the difference.

Damon Che's 'other' band The Speaking Canaries have a new album out and I just got it today. Supposedly its pieced together from jam sessions miles davis/teo macero style and its really good.

As always with TSC Damon on guitar rather than drums

I have all their releases inc the different mixes on vinyl and CD. You can get all the versions on bandcamp too now, but not the new album.

Surprised there's not much chat on them on this thread tbh. Maybe there's another thread on ILM that I posted about them on?

revived this one as I have been listening to sweep the leg johnny again recently

rest in peace, Steve Sostak of Sweep the Leg Johnny, incredible talent. also so many people I know have been sharing stories of how kind he was, how encouraging of younger musicians and bands

Makes me think of my friend EJL, who I mentioned on the obit thread on ILE -- a radio DJ first and foremost, but always encouraging, and always kind. Music needs these people.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 8 February 2023 15:36 (one year ago) link

I was wondering if this thread would emerge, it's been a rough couple of days.

Seeing people's stories popping up on his FB page has helped, but the thought of Steve no longer being in the world seems incalculable.

We shared a few stages, helped out, and hung out when they started coming to London over two decades ago (Check Engine too), it was an instant love affair between our little circle and the Sweep boys, they're still all very dear to my heart, old musician friends have been messaging back and forth in shared incredulity.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 8 February 2023 15:47 (one year ago) link

terribly sad but glad you got to know him

should also be said I will never forget seeing them for the first time and getting my head ripped clean off
