Still haven't picked up "American Don", but that one is as a trio.
Don't know Sweep the Leg... at all, never heard them.

bellini is at times great!
― Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:39 (twenty years ago) link
And yup, What Burns Never Returns is probably the best Don Cab album, though Don Cab 2 is pretty interesting as the intersection between pure rawk Don Cab and experimental Don Cab. I have a copy of the Bellini cd and haven't listened to it much. It's ok, but fairly different from Don Cab, what with the vocals and all. The guitar style is pretty different too.

Don Caballero: All their albums are great, but What Burns Never Returns is my fave, followed closely by American Don. As for side projects, I like Storm & Stress' Under Thunder and Fluorescent Light (although I warn everyone to stay away from the self-titled). The Bellini album is ok, but I never got into it as much as I thought I would.
(btw, Ian and Erich from DC are in Storm & Stress, and Damon is in Bellini and was in Thee Speaking Canaries.)

I like Don Cab much better...StLJ's drummer nails all the meter changes, but he's not that, um, good or interesting.

Well, compared to Damon Che, yeah. But on the whole I think he's a great drummer, and really fun to watch. And I'm shocked that you didn't think much of them live— they're easily in my top 5 best live acts I've ever seen.
― Nick Mirov (nick), Thursday, 29 May 2003 03:07 (twenty years ago) link
Plus! Sax should be encouraged in more rock bands! Sweep is about as close as it gets to my dream band where metal riffs and free jazz skronking collide. \m/
And Don Cab ain't bad.

Artist: Don CaballeroTitle: World Class Listening ProblemLabel: Relapse RecordsU.S. Release date is: 5/16/2006Info: The legendary Don Caballero have re-emerged! Inarguably one of the most celebrated, influential and innovative bands in recent times, Don Caballero is the vanguard of progressive, instrumental music. With World Class Listening Problem, its first full-length album in almost 5 years, Don Cab prove once again that they are head and shoulders above their peers. The bands powerful, percussive-heavy sonic advance is more dense, more expansive, and burns with a new-found urgency. World Class Listening Problem is prime Don Caballero and an indispensable addition to the illustrious Don Cab canon.

I was working out and listening to my mp3 player and I have come to the conclusion that Don Caballero is like indie rock for body builders. I was listening to What Burns Never Returns and got laughing thinking of the notion of body builders getting really amped up listening to Don Cab and then going out side and flipping a Miyata.

Nostalgia'd my way into this thread and this video. I was at this show with a bunch of college friends and Sweep are forever legendary in our minds for this moment (watch until the end or ffwd).

See also the band Check Engine with Steve and Chris from Sweep, one album iirc, very good indeed.

True story. When I lived in a far west suburb back in 2001 I was in a laundromat one night and these dudes walked in with a friend with a camera and started taking what were clearly promo pictures. It was Check Engine. Even though I'd heard of STLJ at that point I'd never seen them to know the difference.

what's the name of ian's new band? i saw them play not too long ago and the name's escaping me...― Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 29 May 2003 14:06 (fifteen years ago) Bookmark Flag Post PermalinkBattles. Where'd you see 'em at, Yanc3? I saw their first show (with Panthers and Les Savvy Fav) back in December at Northsix (not in September as reported in Pitchfork) and it was just kinda okay. Saw their third show about a month ago at Galapagos, and it was TONS better.― hstencil, Thursday, 29 May 2003 14:12 (fifteen years ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Damon Che's 'other' band The Speaking Canaries have a new album out and I just got it today. Supposedly its pieced together from jam sessions miles davis/teo macero style and its really good.
As always with TSC Damon on guitar rather than drums

I have all their releases inc the different mixes on vinyl and CD. You can get all the versions on bandcamp too now, but not the new album.
Surprised there's not much chat on them on this thread tbh. Maybe there's another thread on ILM that I posted about them on?
revived this one as I have been listening to sweep the leg johnny again recently

rest in peace, Steve Sostak of Sweep the Leg Johnny, incredible talent. also so many people I know have been sharing stories of how kind he was, how encouraging of younger musicians and bands

Makes me think of my friend EJL, who I mentioned on the obit thread on ILE -- a radio DJ first and foremost, but always encouraging, and always kind. Music needs these people.

I was wondering if this thread would emerge, it's been a rough couple of days.
Seeing people's stories popping up on his FB page has helped, but the thought of Steve no longer being in the world seems incalculable.
We shared a few stages, helped out, and hung out when they started coming to London over two decades ago (Check Engine too), it was an instant love affair between our little circle and the Sweep boys, they're still all very dear to my heart, old musician friends have been messaging back and forth in shared incredulity.
