Folk artist Art Garfunkel busted for pot possession
HURLEY, N.Y. (AP) — Art Garfunkel, part of the folk music duo Simon and Garfunkel, was charged with having marijuana after police pulled over his limousine for speeding in upstate New York.
Garfunkel, 62, of Manhattan, was caught with a small amount of marijuana in his jacket pocket and was charged with possession of marijuana, a violation, the Daily Freeman newspaper of Kingston, N.Y., reported.
Police said Garfunkel was riding alone when a state trooper stopped the limo about 12:20 p.m. EST on Saturday in Hurley, about 90 kilometres southwest of the New York state capital Albany. The trooper smelled marijuana after approaching the vehicle.
State police Capt. Louis Barbaria said the trooper didn’t realize who he arrested until later, although Garfunkel told him he is a celebrity. Barbaria didn’t know why Garfunkel was in Ulster County.
Garfunkel is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 28 on the charge, or he could respond by mail or have a lawyer appear for him.
He faces a $100 fine, unless he has had a conviction within the last three years and police did not say whether he has.
Garfunkel completed a U.S. concert tour with Paul Simon last fall, their first in 20 years. Simon and Garfunkel, who have been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, produced a string of hits in the 1960s, including The Sounds of Silence, Mrs. Robinson, Old Friends and The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy), before breaking up.

I don't buy the trooper's story.
Besides, isn't being a 1960s folk singer probably cause for a drug search in most jurisdiction? I believe there's case law to back this up.

Singer Art Garfunkel, who pleaded guilty to marijuana possession last year, has been arrested again on the same charge.

Garfunkel, 63, half of the legendary '60s duo Simon and Garfunkel, was pulled over on Sunday by a New York state trooper near Woodstock after running a stop sign....

The trooper's report of the incident said a strong marijuana odor was coming from the car and a marijuana cigarette was found in the ashtray.
