Ragga/hip-hop hybrids

I've just got the new Soul Jazz compilation Nice Up The Dance, which brings together a brilliant selection of ragga/hip-hop hybrids, and I'm now looking for recommendations of more of the same.

I've loved this particular type of 'crossover' for many years, with some favourites being:
'Wings of the Morning (remix)' by Capleton feat. Method Man
'Sound of da Police' by KRS One
'Wicked' by Ice Cube
'Theme (Underdog remix)' by Sabres of Paradise (yes, I know it's got a nearly talent-free whiteboy mc on it, but yet it RULES!)

Are there any other such records I should know about?

can't remember what was on that comp (i don't think it impressed me too much) but there's plenty of that stuff around, the east coast hip hop scene's always had a love affair with reggae, not just at the moment.

BDP have got plenty rap/reggae hybrids, i like 'Party Together', it's kinda retarded but totally lovable with it.

Fu-Schnickens - Ring the Alarm.

All of that Smiff n Wessun album (which is so under-rated incidentally) cops its foggy bottom-end from reggae.

Kardinall Offishall - Bellydancer (of course)

Demon Boyz - Glimmety Glammety, Junglist (shits 'pon alla dem)

London Posse - Money Mad

I even think there were some Ragga Hip Hop comps brought out in the UK in the early 90s, i think a lot of the MCs were on that Bug album that's just come out.

Oh Yeah by Foxy Brown feat Spragga Benz is also a true classic.

at a push, I guess Inspection (check one) by Leftfield maybe possibly just about qualifies.

and maybe Sub-Crazy by Method Man, though that's more like dub hip hop

that compilation is ace - I especially like track 3 and 10.

Elephant Man - Bad Man a Bad Man
Wayne Hill - Orange Hill
NWA - "Prelude" on Niggaz4life

... i just got this compilation as well. it's quite nice, but i think i was expecting more continuity. the ward 21 track is the best in my opinion, followed closely by the ms. thing track.

i second the new flesh recommendation as well -- i think "understanding" was one of the most underrated records of 2001.

i meant 2002.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Monday, 16 June 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm... i found understanding a bit hotchpotch to be honest. "Stick and Move" is such an excellent track and i bought it for that but apart from "Real Child Soldier" I found most of it a little irritating and in some parts very poorly produced. Then again I only listened to it properly a few times through.

Couple of amazing records incorporating pre-ragga Jamaican styles: "Bling Bling" by Big P & Skeme (I think) (it was definitely some of those Sterling Collat lot) had a very nice late 80s dancehall-y flavour to it, reminded me of "Blinking Something" by Pinchers or something like that.

Also "Mama Says" by Drilla is a terrific rootsish hip hop record and the Boxedclever remix is even better. There's a very heavy Jamaican influence in UK hip hop in general, obv.

when I say rootsish I mean with a flavour of roots reggae not like The Roots (possibly) obv.

Badfish - "Soundbwoy Killas" mix of dancehall, hip hop, roots allmusic gave it 4 stars hard to find on kazaa or any p2ps though

Anything by Kardinal Offishall--especially "Ol'Time Killin'" and the B-side "Maxine"
There's also that great tune with Supercat and Kriss Kross

What I really get a kick out of, however, are the dancehall remixes that use a hip hop beat--there's some nice stuff out that use "In Da Club," Elephant Man's "Fuck Off" uses something that I can't remember--same with Sizzla's "Bust outta dis and get progressive." Pretty much every popular rap tune has versions done by Capleton, Sizzla, the whole gang...the opposite is cool too--when folks mashup pop tunes with reggae riddims--I have a great version of "Get your freak on" over the Sleng-teng...

Jess, I'd like to award you an honorary MLS.

There's a great track called UK Bubblers by Skeme feat Rodney P on Titan sounds: the instrumental is killer and has a great sample that just repeats "I love the jamaican girls them dancin', them dancin'"... dunno who it's by but it's on my mix on betalounge.com if you want to hear it - about 4 tracks in if you want to hear it...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Titan Sounds has still to release anything other than tremendous music. From what I've heard of the new stuff on that forthcoming comp, that seems likely to continue. Skitz's stuff tends to be more reggae-influenced than Mickle's, it seems. "Destinations" by Riddla is probably the skankingest so far.

(The Drilla record I mentioned above is an uncredited Skitz side project apparently)

Talking of Rodney P, I'm fully expecting his solo LP to be very tremendous, but why the delay?
