soulseek is a bitch

its taken around 3 weeks to open up all my directories for sharing after slsk stopped accepting my previous username. now i have to it all again after this happened a second time. it also wiped my userlist. why does slsk take so long to process the sharing of folders (it crashes if i try and open too many at once)?

i know i should just post this on the slsk board but feel like ranting here instead. add your slsk comments here.

i just want the wishlist to work again.

the new 149 update/version doesn't seem to have changed that.

but apart from that it's awesome!

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a 149 version ?!!!

why did nobody tell me ?!!

tell me how it's awesome and why.

piscesboy, Monday, 16 June 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i love soulseek unconditionally

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i can never connect first-time either

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

it boils down to how many files it's sharing. it scans the lot, and anything over 8000 or so takes a while for it to process. i've lost user lists several times for no real reason. which was a pain as there was some folk there that had some fantastic rare gems for downloading. steve - what you known as now? (on slsk)

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

bizarrely my username is intact, its still base58

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i still had you down as blueski

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the server is down... it went all wonky to me last night as well.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 16 June 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Updated to 149 and it works fine. Maybe try that.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 16 June 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

would it kill them to let you search the groups instead of scrolling through the whole f*ckin list.

seanp (seanp), Monday, 16 June 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

slsk rulz, no question...

but fix the wishlist!!!!!!!!!!!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 16 June 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

and the search function.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Monday, 16 June 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, that too. i left a 'beatles' search open for 2 hours today, as a test, and got three (3) live users sharing 'beatles' files.

Aaron A., Monday, 16 June 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

SeanP, if you click into the rooms window, simply typing the first few letters of the name of a room quickly will select it.

I never get any of these problems that everyone else seems to get suffer from, i just think it is pot luck on a whole host of system variables. I do get the memory hog thing however.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 16 June 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The biggest problem Soulseek has is the users with folders in folders in folders in folders in folders in folders in folders in folders in folders. And most of these folders have lengthy names. Like:

c:\my music\soulseek\soulseek\soulseek\new\rock and otherwise miscellaneous stuff\complete albums\double checked and at least @ 192kb\==========will be moved at some point within the next month or so possibly longer than that okay!!!============\!!!!!check my user info first!!!!!\west coast indie rock\stephen malkmus and the jicks\=====read user info people!!=====\stephen malkmus and the jicks - pig lib tour live at the choking donkey\first set 8pm ***incomplete!!***

That's really fun to scroll through as you're picking the right person to download from.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 19 June 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

it's free

ss, Thursday, 19 June 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm sick of just the opposite - people who keep everything they've ever download in directory; so the first 10 minutes of browsing their files are trying to figure out what albums "01 - intro" and "13 - outro" are from. they - must - burn.

your null fame (yournullfame), Thursday, 19 June 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I recently got attitude from some guy who informed me that sharing 4 GB of vinyl-only music (at least half of it out of print) was not enough, and that I should share more. I politely told him to fuck off.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 19 June 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

ah yeh sorry about that siegbran

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 June 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
So I've just, thanks to their inability to PUT SHIT IN FOLDERS, queued up an entire users hard drive. I deleted everything but now it's all downloading in to an upload folder. Apart from deleting thousands of files by hand is there any way to just MAKE IT STOP?

helpme!, Monday, 8 August 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

Are they on your users upload permitted list? Remove them from it and that should stop the uploads.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Of course! Thank you! I was so frustrated I couldn't think straight. To think I would have spent the entire day right clicking.:)

helpme!, Monday, 8 August 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Man, I've done that. What kind of asshole doesn't organize their folders?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

I downloaded one tune then uninstalled it.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Which tune did you download, PJ?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

A Metallica tune out of principle?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

What kind of asshole doesn't organize their folders?

putting track number before artist in the filename is still a cardinal sin for me.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

Rehggieton classic "Gasolina" - haven't listened to it yet. It's some kind of remix though, featuring someone or other. Something to do with dogs, I think. I wanted to use my broadband capabilities, but like a twat I chose someone witout broadband capabilities at their end, so it made no sodding difference.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

putting track number before artist in the filename is still a cardinal sin for me.

You hate me. :-(((((((( Some of my tracklist have this. Sorry.

I'm metalmuzak btw.

nathalie sans denouement (stevie nixed), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

I've lost count of how many times i've seen a whole HD queued.
Also always see lots of people sharing the entire contents of their HD. I always message people and let them know. It's nearly always people new to slsk.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

bitches. i hate all ye who do not organize well.

AaronK (AaronK), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

putting track number before artist in the filename is still a cardinal sin for me.

i don't mind if they're in a folder containing only that release though. it's just annoying when it's track number and titles in a folder of hundreds.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

for well-known singles (like "gasolina") i use winmx. i think there's a built-in download cap that keeps you from accidentally grabbing someone's entire hard drive at once.

my favorite cover band, crystal shit (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

my filenames are track number, then song title. You get the album title in a parent folder, and the artist title in a parent folder to that.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

It's nearly always people new to slsk.

Or exhibitionists.

for well-known singles (like "gasolina") i use winmx.

Or Limewire.

nathalie sans denouement (stevie nixed), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

"limewire" is such a lame, horrible name. wtf do mp3s have to do with limes?

my favorite cover band, crystal shit (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

ok, yeah, "soulseek" isn't much better.

my favorite cover band, crystal shit (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

It now transpires that "Gasolina" is very bad indeed.

Limewire is a good name, I think.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Everyone switch to the current 'test' verion. I've been using it for a month wih no hitches. They have tweaked the search function and I'm getting fantastic results!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 15 August 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

can anyone recommend a good mac client that ISN'T NICOTINE??

nicotine has some sort of memory problem w/ my system that i can't identify and i'm too linux-illiterate to troubleshoot all the x11 tools i installed.

also i just find the whole interface of nicotine pretty retarded, and the lack of a wishlist is sort of a deal-breaker ... what's the point if you can't just let it search away in the background?

vahid (vahid), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'd like to ask the same question.

I lost all my prefs and about 40gb of files last week, now I can't seem to install nicotine on Panther. I'm told ssX is the new style, but I found it confusing and ugly and counter-intuitive.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 15 August 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Obv not as ugly as nicotine, but I was kind of fond of nicotine anyway.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 15 August 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

you can make ssx look good by using the color prefs!

can you stick all the windows together

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

well no. i cant say miss the singlewindowness of nicotine / solarseek tho, theres nothing like a little log window with "important information" and "said in chat" ticked to keep you from working up to date with your slsk universe

fe7 (FE7), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm told ssX is the new style, but I found it confusing and ugly and counter-intuitive.

Counter-intuitive? How so? I like it. Easy to use. Never tried that Nictone ssk program though, soI can't compare.

nathalie starts to cry each time we meet (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

how do u do that stuff with the colours?

explain like you would to a 9 year old. like, a 9 year old
who isn't very good on the computers.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

while soulseex is running, you hit that apple button and while you keep that down (don't push too hard!), you hit the comma button: the ssX preferences screen appears! good work! now go to the colors-tab and feel free to take any color from the palette. go on, you can do it. don't be shy now.

willem (willem), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
I've just installed SoulseeX and entered the exciting world of slsk. So far, I'm not very impressed with all those stupid windows, but I'll put up with them if I can find stuff. Which I'm not, very much. And when I do find things they just sit there prettily saying "queued". I'm sharing over 1000 files. I've opened up Port 2440. No one seems to be uploading anything from me.

Is there anything I might be doing wrong with my set-up or etiquette? Do people only share with their friends these days to avoid RIAA type action? I was looking for the ILM chat room but couldn't find it in the list (there only seemed to be 137).

My username is rararabbits. Could someone be able to try downloading something from me?

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 3 December 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Ah, wait, I've reloaded the rooms list and found the ILM one now.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 3 December 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

i was trying to download an album the other day and i had one of those rare moments where i forgot to look carefully at the folder name before downloading -- i didn't realize it said MY MUSIC and that there were thousands of files in there.

that motherfucker crashed me and made it impossible for me to restart slsk without deleting that config file (i lost everything that was in my queue).

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 3 December 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

OK, I have changed my name to albaba now so people might know who I am.

The ILM room is a bit baffling. It just says:

[Frankie_Teardrop] i killed about 48 old people today
[PappaWheelie] did you go into the "IHM" room and demand a description also?
[i am nervous] 1986
[Magazine] Got FRETLESS?

on constant rotation.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 3 December 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

can't help ya -- it's been months since i was last in there.

The Great Pagoda of Funn (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 3 December 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

It's OK. I've worked it out now with help of fezaffe in there.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 3 December 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

so does the beta work on an entirely different structure? there seem to be so few people using it.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 3 December 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

The I Love Music room really isn't for chatting, it is used so you can do room searches for what you are looking for. Since you are new do not be shy just ask for what you want on the general chat and the room will help out, no problem. I have so many friends now that I find any and everything I'm looking for but I think a lot of people are 'User List' only. I share some things for anybody but restrict most of the good stuff now days. The ticker on top is nothing and I usually hit 'Hide' to make it go away but we will have someone pop in about once a day asking, "What does ILM stand for?"

Alba welcome to your new addiction!

BeeOK (boo radley), Saturday, 3 December 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Thanks! How do I encourage people to add me to their user list? Have good stuff, I suppose. Oh well, everyone add me if you can be bothered. I'm albaba not rararabbits, as I said.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 3 December 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

convince them that you're actually jessica alba.

Mitya (mitya), Saturday, 3 December 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Just stay with it for awhile and eventually you'll come across most of the best users. Once you get a good user base it's pretty good.

And if searches turn up nothing, add them to the wishlist. You'll find what you're after most of the time.

splates (splates), Sunday, 4 December 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

I quit the seek awhile ago, now maybe two months? I've had the time of my life man you don't know what you are missing to stop the seek for awhile and get off that merry go round. When a true addict gets clean...
Seriously best wishes have fun, but just remember you can stop and enjoy life sometimes, too, any time you want to.
