Is Angus Young really dead? Sad.

from www.drownedinsound.com:

CMU, the daily music newsletter of Unlimited Media, has today reported that AC/DC legend Angus Young died on Thursday at the age of 48. Although the news has yet to be confirmed elsewhere, one has to assume it is true, based on that whole legal/libel aspect... therefore, it is with a heavy heart that we do this;

Angus Young was born on March 31, 1955 in Glasgow, Scotland. He gave up school at 15 and went to work for a soft porn magazine called Ribald as a printer, before becoming a full-time muscian for the next 30+ years. He had played guitar since the age of eleven and had performed with his brother, Malcolm, in a string of previous bands, with names such as Tantrum and Kentuckee.

AC/DC was formed in 1973 and Angus' reputation as a guitarist grew quickly, notably for his distinctive stage persona; with his spasmodic, seemingly out-of-control onstage body language, patented duckwalk and on-the-floor body jerks. And of course, the school uniform.

Surviving the death of lead singer, Bon Scott, early on, the band went on to write a slew of seminal rock albums, most notably 'Back In Black' (possibly the greatest rock n'roll album of all time) and 'For Those About To Rock, We Salute You'.

The band were on tour as recently as last year, and had a reputation as being one of the best live acts in the history of rock.

Angus Young... we salute you.

I've never heard of "drownedinsound" ever. Sounds like a bunch of shit.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 16 June 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

According to a message I just read, he played a show in Germany on Friday...

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 16 June 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

...from beyond the grave!

dave q, Monday, 16 June 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

But think how much traffic their site is getting now! Advertisers will be quite happy.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 16 June 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

so not cool. drownedinsound better not show its face around these parts.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 16 June 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Now playing: Hold Me Back/Stiff Upper Lip/Safe In New York/Can't Stand Still.

The guitar line in the last is a thing of wonder.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 16 June 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Although the news has yet to be confirmed elsewhere, one has to assume it is true

And they call themselves a news source? Maybe Jayson Blair went to work for drownedinsound.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 16 June 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

That drownedinsound website is not a commercial entity, it's just a collection of voluntary contributors, mostly from Brit teenagers/ students/early 20s. I would expect the organiser of the site, will either pull the story/ or amend it, or issue a further news article to say that it's untrue.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 16 June 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

They appear to have pulled the article, even though the link is still there.

doesnt drownedinsound work in tandem with the dreaded bang?

robotman, Monday, 16 June 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

not only is this a fuckin' hoax, it's taking attention away from the death of Hume Cronyn! Those bitches!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 16 June 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

'Back in Black' isn't even the best AC/DC album, let alone the best rock album of all time.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 16 June 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

No, but in fairness it's definitely the one that's going to turn up in obituaries. It's like the people complaining that after Nina Simone died, the first song the stations played was the one that sold MORE THAN ALL HER OTHER RECORDS PUT TOGETHER.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, I think I still have staff access to DiS. That is out of order!

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Never mind, they've taken it down.

Sean Adams was writing a column for Bang. That is the be-all and end-all of the connection. Although Sean Adams would like to think that he is the be-all and end-all of DiS, fullstop, that's not neccessarily true.

Anyway...

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the key bit is:

"CMU, the daily music newsletter of Unlimited Media, has today reported that..."

Shoddy news sources, basically. Wonder where they got it from?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

DiS is now totally down. Wonder if it's connected?

kate (kate), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

No, it's down because their servers are utterly rubbish.

Gonzo, Tuesday, 17 June 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)
