trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

avoid that cassius song

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Trife, you might want to check out:

Artists:
Funky Green Dogs
Murk
The Fog (esp "Been a Long Time" an all-time classic, wonderful track)
DJ Pierre, esp up to about 1995
Mr Fingers
Todd Terry (wonderful, but vocals rare)
Marshall Jefferson

Labels:
Strictly Rhythm (choose carefully)
Trax (ditto)

That's about all I know, which isn't much. But it's a start.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Trife, this will help you too:

http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/1392/House.html

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

blount you do know that i like pretty much every embarrassing dance rap collab ever made right!! or any awkward dance/pop mishmash at all, ill rep for the spawn soundtrack!!

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, in that case seek out that cassius song

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

trife get the "my house in monmartre" comp on astralwerks...a dozen daft punks

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks colin and jess!! is there an entirely good masters at work cd besides nuyorican soul (which i adore but is too tasteful and uh not house) i know their songs and production jobs and shit but like can i go buy an album of all that!!

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:46 (twenty-two years ago)

also whats this quick response bullshit while my nas thread dies lonely!!

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Nas is too funky for us whiteys.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

if you think nuyorican soul is too tasteful, then yr probably not gonna like most other masters at work

but there's a 4-disc anthology that sells for something ridiculously cheap like $25, which is very very good

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

also, there's a 2-disc "best of strictly rhythm" (ugly ass yellow script on black cover) which retails for $8.99 at most borders

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate 'funky' nas songs too thats why i made the thread!! jess ive seen that on four lp vinyl i think i will cop it

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the nuyorican tastefulness is only for using real instruments and parading around in jazz authenticity

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, can't stand it myself. Too smug. Good house is desperate. Go for the that Strictly Rhythm comp Jess suggested. Also "House Sound of Chicago" series if you can find it.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

there's two maw comps, one silver and one gold. go for the silver, it's the early stuff and it's far less "authentic" sounding = way more fun. the gold is more into nuyorican soul/"real jazz musicians" stuff = too stuffy

the louie vega-mixed 10 years of strictly rhythm 2cd is ace ace ace

also, treat yourself to some TODD EDWARDS if you wanna make a bit of a leap

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and m people elegant slumming is the proverbial BOMB

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i also like the crydamoure presents waves comp on astralwerks--crydamoure is bangalter from daft punk's label so you can figure it out from there. there's a new vol. 2 but i haven't heard it yet

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

M people is good commercial house, but you have to like that woman's vocals. She sounds like she's gargling on a mouthful of walnuts while someone tries to asphyxiate her with a very large, fluffy pillow.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:59 (twenty-two years ago)

the best thing about the kind of glossy house comps trife likes is that you can usually find them used for about .98, esp in indie record stores where they think they won't be able to move them

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

it's the large, fluffy pillow part that kills me

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 06:07 (twenty-two years ago)

that ghostface/cassius track isn't so bad. especially if you like ghostface.

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 06:07 (twenty-two years ago)

jess youre so right!! the one good thing about everyone in athens hating fun is that all the good rap and dance is randomly tossed in the bargain bin while the thirty dollar paul barman deluxe cd and tigerbeat six's greatest farts get front store placement

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

the only thing you need - or that i need at the moment - is suburban knight's the art of stalking. apparently there's a new album out.
ive been feelin these ministry of sound cds
where? in your bowels? ;-)

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

;-)

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

that's nothing--when i was in seattle back in april i found five greensleeve rhythm albums, still in shrinkwrap, in the 99-cent bin.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah ive seen them cheap here too but it was cuz they were fucked up or something every track had the same beat!!!

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Trife, Suburban Knight as suggested by Natalie above is cool beyond belief if you can handle a more techno flavour.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

haha!

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

the s trife top five hip house songs

5) epmd - its time to party
4) wu tang - gravel pit
3) big daddy kane - this is the house that cee built
2) de la - kicked out the house
1) eminem - without me

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

10) bubba sparxx/crystal method off the blade 2 soundtrack
9) d12 - purple pills
8) da brat f jermaine dupri - what im lookin for
7) jungle brothers - ill house you
6) missy - 4 my people (basement jaxx remix)

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Trife, I can echo recommendations for the Ten Years of Strictly Rhythm, Crydamoure Presents Waves and My House In Montmarte comps.

You might also like stuff by the Cajual/Relief/Radikal Fear labels - mid-nineties Chicago house a bit like French stuff but earlier and harder. Look for the Future Sound of Chicago and Radikal Fear CDs especially.

If you enjoy MaW but want something a bit less stuffy than NuYorican Soul try the Body & Soul 2 comp - which is the best, spaciest, dreamiest compendium of MaW-style house I've found.

Also I bet you'd like Armand Van Helden's 2 Future 4 U.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, my house in montmatre i think is what you are looking for. and the crydamoure comps, waves I and II (though i havent got these yet)

kitsune love is another good comp, theres a great braxe&falke track on there, love lost. i think its worth it just for that track

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Colin already mentioned it, but if you like the hip-hop side of the early hip-house stuff, you have to check out Todd Terry / Royal House. You'll also recognize Marshall Jefferson's "House Music Anthem" and "Ride the Rhythm" in hip-house, so you might want to seek those out.

That doesn't really answer your question though--not a lot of old chicago house is in print on CD. One place to pick up some old Chicago classics (plus some Detroit ones, too) is the Warp 10+1 "Influences" comp. You might not entirely like the skew of the selection, but its still a good source for picking up a lot of good tracks on CD cheaply, and it might compliment what others have suggested.

arch Ibog (arch Ibog), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

im not sure trife is really going for the 88 era chicago stuff here?

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I know. but since he mentioned his favorite hip house songs, I thought it might be of interest (?) And people upthread mentioned Trax, Mr. Fingers, etc. --- but, yeah.

arch Ibog (arch Ibog), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

so what's the opinion on the Cassius/Ghostface Streets remix. i've only heard it once but it sounded hella doomy, closest we'll get to the mighty Ghostface going gutta.

nebbesh (nebbesh), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i distinctly remember the only negative criticism being made by playgroup was the fact it had hip house influences.

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Cassius Streets remix not very good, because the backing track is weak. But I have to admit Skinner's call and response "Oi"'s fit right in with Ghostface, somehow.

Ben Williams, Tuesday, 17 June 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

no way, the streets beat is ill (at least i thunk it was). thought it was all boink boink sturm und drang type ish.

i need a second opinion.

nebbesh (nebbesh), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

also very good : Berlin-Chicago comp feat. green velvet and a host of other *cheesy* stuff

myopic pix (nathalie), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

and of course any Green Velvet is totally worth having, esp the s-t one on F-111/Warner Bros. that is a total 99-cent bin fave since it went outta print six months after being released

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: Cassius/Ghostface - Thrilla: the mixes I've heard range from good to great, and they're all very different.

Album version: great, obviously.
A Bass Day Remix: full-on banging & funky in a Donna Summer I Feel Love way. No Ghoseface verse, only the vocal hook repeated a few times.
Blake Baxter Too Much Tequila Mix: Angular old-skool vibe, a lot like...uhhh...I'll House You!
The Streets Remix: the combination of Skinner and Ghostface is fantastic. As said before, dark/doomy/minimal, totally great. Apart from Ghostface's verses there's nothing left of the Cassius track though.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Art of Stalking is fine but not as enjoyable as (also on Peacefrog) the Moodymann from April/May.

House producers of the nineties to check: Roy Davis Jr, Terrence Parker, Theo Parrish, Daniel Wang, Joe Claussell, Jovonn, Jordan Fields, Todd Terry, Blaze (25 years later album), Carl Craig,

Jan

Jan Geerinck (jahsonic), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

STOCK UP ON GREEN VELVET.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

...but he was after big voiced female vocals... although the digression to classic instrumental and male vocal house was started by me, so mea culpa...

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I suggest Audio Bullys if you like gonzo chopped-up "Theme From SWAT" samples and sneering cusses and other things that invoke the Stereo MCs all fucked up evil

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

big ditto to green velvet

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

the thirty dollar paul barman deluxe cd and tigerbeat six's greatest farts get front store placement

Sides. Splitting.

What, no Derrick Carter?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

OH YEAH. get the 611 mix cd "about now..." the first half is fucking unreal

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm starting to develop a taste for house via Baltimore club stuff, which is just the nastiest extreme possible, in truth prolly closer to dirty south than ghetto detroit house or anything like that. but man, the kick drum pulse that's in every beat is more addictive than diwali, especially when they have a sped-up sample from Lil Jon or a 60's girl group or South Park's "Uncle Fucka" going over it...beautiful stuff. the mix CD's are a bitch to track down even here in Bmore, but it's on the radio enough that i hear it plenty anyway.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

green velvet green velvet... if you're more into housy stuff, his Cajmere outings are a defintie must.

myopic pix (nathalie), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 07:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say anything you can get with that mid-to-late 90s tough new jersey garage vibe, stuff like Mone, Angel Moraes, Urban Blues Project, Michael Proctor, Joi Cardwell, Dajae (okay, so that's chicago, but hey), Kings of Tomorrow and shading into the bassline stuff like Mousse T mix of Ann Nesby's "Can I get a witness", Mousse T mix of Nuyorican Soul "Runaway", AVH and some Grant Nelson Azuli tracks from that period - some of the best 'soul-y' house ever made, IMHO...

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

cajmere is green velvet?? i love cajmere, i had no idea.

minna (minna), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't see trife liking some of the recommendations here.

green velvet is a must, probably the best lyricist around as far as I'm concerned.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

the s trife top five hip house songs

5) epmd - its time to party

4) wu tang - gravel pit

3) big daddy kane - this is the house that cee built

2) de la - kicked out the house

1) eminem - without me

Uh this is Hip House?

Yes, you're right, Ronan, he has a long way to go if he's *feeling those Minsitry of Sound CDs*. ;-)

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 19 June 2003 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

13) meth - tical 2000
12) queen latifah - come into my house
11) redman - im a bad

whats wrong with ministry of sound???

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 19 June 2003 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

14)foxy brown - magnetic
15)d mob ft. nuff juice - put your hands together (this is on your tape-in-transit trife)
16)ja rule - livin it up

minna (minna), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

hey trife i'm talking to this guy from frankfurt on slsk:
[RillaTequila] i listen to a lot of latin and vocal house, cuz i'm gettin tired of mainstream hiphop
[girlthursday] what about hip house :)
[RillaTequila] i'm not sure if ya'll listen to house over there in australia...

(blah blah)

[RillaTequila] that's alright. but that is nothing alike the house music we listen to here in europe
[girlthursday] what is it like there?
[RillaTequila] .... if you wanna listen to a real nice track download "the avalanches - a different feeling" from my house folder
[RillaTequila] or cogito - long island groove
[RillaTequila] or don carlos unlimited - love and devotion
[girlthursday] omg the avalanches are my favourite band!!
[girlthursday] they're from melbourne too :)
[RillaTequila] a track, a friend of mine produced and which was quite popular last summer is: sun set feat stephanie pop - so good (chris lum remix)

i didnt dl any of this stuff yet but i'm pasting it here so i can remember it for later.
(i'm dling the lumidee album from him now)

minna (minna), Thursday, 19 June 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I never said trife had a "long way to go", frankly I'm closer to ministry of sound than moodymann and the beauteous hope tradition anyway.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 June 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

has anyone heard the astropioneers record by the eternals? there's a michael mayer mix of that on their site... i need... i want...

david day (winslow), Thursday, 19 June 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

trife I'll add you to my long list of people to make cds for if you want

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 19 June 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

oh ronan i do
