we have a weiner

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(although i have never been seduced by the whole flying nun thing, my continuing love for superchunk can only be explained by my wanting to be able to will teenage-hood into a perpetual state, odd considering it sucked so bad)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

(it was stolen from you and you are here to reclaim it)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

the answer is Barbara Manning obv

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

but which song?

(i was thinking "smoking her wings" or something off in new zealand but that's cheating.)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

early Luna - that first record is total NZ/Flying Nun type stuff.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Well "Smoking Her Wings" is a Bats song, but yeah good call by jim. I think in general she often has that fast-strummed, clean (Clean) guitar sound. I love "Somewhere Soon" from Lately I Keep Scissors.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Mosurock mentioned here I think that the A-Frames are doing an A+ job at a Gordons rehash, which I kinda agree with... (funny enough, the same was said about Sonic Youth in 1983 by someone)

Tall Dwarfs... oh jesus... where do I start.. Pavement, Yo La, TMBG to some degree, Elf Power, and then some.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

ok songs songs

* Pavement "Conduit for Sale!" (for Tall Dwarf's "Get Outta The Garage")

gygax!, I assume actual covers of NZ bands are disqualified as being too obviously fulfilling the definition of your thread query?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I love "Somewhere Soon" from Lately I Keep Scissors.

OTM!

Butterglory's early stuff is very FN

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 19 June 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Merge would sell its soul to be early 80s FN

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 19 June 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

(the purpose of this thread is to nominate songs that fit the description. covers are not accepted.)

yo la tengo - "barnaby, hardly working"

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 19 June 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"kiwis go home" by whoever did "kiwis go home".

forbidden or obsolete (24 hour troubleshooter), Thursday, 19 June 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i think "kiwis go home" was by the strapping field hands and was primarily directed at peter jefferies.

cameron, Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

love battery - "foot"
the dream syndicate - "halloween"

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 20 June 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Guided by voices-Motor Away....heck all of Bee Thousand.
For Barbara Manning I'd say:
B4 We Go Under (but that one was written by Robert Scott, so does it count)
Sympathy Wreath
Life/Luck
I've never heard Envvelope Matador head honcho's band, but I've been told they sound like a Flying Nun band.

brg30 (brg30), Thursday, 3 July 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't like it when anyone tries to approximate the "dunedin" sound or whatever, especially not dunedin bands. (NB i like heaps of early FN)

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 3 July 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah fuck Velvet Underground and the Byrds. Who do they think they are?

hamish (hamish), Friday, 4 July 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

cameron yeah yr right it was the strapping field hands & yeah yr right it was about peter jeffries, it doesnt even sound much like "dunedin sound" tho really i was just tryna be smart

duane (24 hour troubleshooter), Friday, 4 July 2003 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't remember that song even though I had that 10". Was it really an attack of Mr. Jefferies?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 4 July 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Pulled out Silver Jews' Arizona Record for the first time in forever and it struck me that Malkmus/Berman probably imagined themselves as the Great Unwashed.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Saturday, 5 July 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Shakey Mo Collier mentioned Luna, but what about Galaxie 500? Always assumed they were influenced by Flying Nun.

stevo (stevo), Saturday, 5 July 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Early Sea and Cake albs
