strangely, it only seems available on vinyl at the moment. Is this just a for a couple of weeks, or will it be for a long time?

coz i want it, but would rather on CD, but am getting impatient..

Robin Goad (rgoad), Thursday, 19 June 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

As far as I can tell, Force Tracks has released the album on vinyl, and licensed the CD rights to BMG, who are sitting on it.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 19 June 2003 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Luomo pulls a Shellac! Woo!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 19 June 2003 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Ordered mine direct from Force Tracks, and got it on CD a couple of weeks before the release date.

Nathan W (Nathan Webb), Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Hopefully never. I heard a promo and I can't fathom what the big deal is. It's the most over-produced piece of cheese ever and makes me just cringe when those vocals come in.

There were a couple of smoking tracks on "VocalCity," but all the hoopla is just unfounded. It sounds like Blaze except Blaze is actually good. There's plenty of other better vocal house out there, this is just crossover marketing synergy for people who are ashamed to delve into other house or tech-house music.

the miracle of consensus

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 20 June 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

That recent Richard Davis album, Safety, is the best tech house album I've heard in a while. Too bad it can't get the publicity Luomo can.

blutroniq (blutroniq), Friday, 20 June 2003 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"There's plenty of other better vocal house out there, this is just crossover marketing synergy for people who are ashamed to delve into other house or tech-house music."

Yeah, obviously the people who have been hyping the Luomo album don't like regular house or tech-house at all. < /heavy sarcasm >

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Ordered mine direct from Force Tracks, and got it on CD a couple of weeks before the release date.

I ordered one from FT earlier this week, so presumably they are still available.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

the promo I saw was on CD, so I'm assuming yes.

hstencil, Friday, 20 June 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like Vocalcity and am looking forward to The Present Lover, but I agree with blutroniq -- Richard Davis' Safety (on Punkt) deserves a lot more love.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Clarification: "a lot more" = "more than it has received" (not necessarily "more than Luomo has received", although possibly that too)

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Tell us more.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i am ambivalent about the luomo record and it upsets me

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It was nice enough.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a nice record -- wish I knew more about house, in order to say something informed. Anyway, it's better than most of the stuff they play at all the clothes stores in the mall. Good web surfing music too.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Of the new songs "Talk in Danger" rules, it's like a prose version of Todd Edward's verse. The rest is boring - like most single artist house albums.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

If I consider the album objectively I can sort of see why people might be ambivalent, but on an emotional level I'm so thoroughly enmeshed with it that it's scary - more than I ever was with Vocalcity, I think. Stuff like "Could Be Like This" just chokes me up with its generosity. I'd like to hear more criticisms though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

'Visitor' boring?!? I think I have to weep now. Humanity is truly evil.

Anyway, what is going on with the cd? Almost all web stores stock it (although amazon.co.uk doesn't and amazon.de does), can't seem to find a copy in the "real" world.

Omar (Omar), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

album of the year u r all gay

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Tell us more.

About Safety? Damn I wish I could write about this stuff half as well as you do, Tim.

Part of its appeal is that Davis builds huge, thumping house tracks, but if you listen a little more analytically you find all of the meticulous detail that gives microhouse its appeal. Davis drops vocals in and out with great timing, and they range from pretty straightforward house-y stuff to chopped-up breaths and gasps very reminiscent of Luomo. Sonja Spogk's vocals on several tracks are particularly hard to resist -- her voice has a mix of sweetness and acid that recalls Beth Gibbons. Some tracks change dramatically midway (like when Davis suddenly injects "Inbetween Thoughts" with so many layers of harmony that it sounds like William Orbit's classic ZTT remixes for the likes of Seal). Truly good stuff, start to finish.

You can hear a track here.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

what label et al?

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

(sorry, that was lazy not to retype it in plain text)

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, "Visitor" is good too, but those second half tracks drag on - the Tessio redux is pointless, especially with so many great mixes already out there.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 20 June 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Immer, Vocalcity and Total 4 were all boring on first listens.

I love them all so much now.

I fully expect I'll feel the same way with The Perfect Lover.

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 20 June 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I think "Tessio" is the worst track on there (which is relative, of course) - I think if I hadn't heard the original version, those long stretches of "yeah well, fuck the chorus!" would totally mystify me.

Spencer, listen to "What Good" - it's amazing.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 20 June 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard the whole thing yet, but the weirdly accented spoken intro to "What Good" is so dang goofy. It's like the worst attempt at an English accent evagh.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 21 June 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It's supposed to be British sounding?!?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 21 June 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I hear it as a kind of early-Prince-doing-a-lousy-Brit-accent thing. How do you hear it?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 21 June 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I imagine Leroy from Flashdance singing it, actually.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 21 June 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now this really does feel like my favourite album.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 21 June 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Leroy isn't in Flashdance

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 21 June 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The character I mean - maybe Leeroy.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 21 June 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no, I'm thinking of Fame, actually!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 21 June 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I just hear Prince, no accent, or maybe Prince doing an Brit accent--specifically the spoken bits of "Automatic" from 1999

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 21 June 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
is this *ever* coming out ?

piscesboy, Friday, 11 July 2003 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

in all truth: i only like the music cos of the cover. it's brilliant

Chip Morningstar (bob), Friday, 11 July 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

you're so shallow!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 11 July 2003 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

to be honest, for me a goodly *half* the appeal of the single
was the photo on the inner sleeve. but then...so what ?
it's our rock n roll as denim once sang,
and we can appreciate it howevah we like.

piscesboy, Friday, 11 July 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with Finney & Matos on this - surprised whenever anyone's lukewarm or dismissive about it and thankful that we already have BOTH Luomo - The Present Lover AND Dizzee Rascal - Boy In Da Corner by this point in the year!

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 11 July 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)
