c'mon - mercurial geniuses of the intravenous v.u. jangle jingle sound or the passing fancies of an art-rocker generation?

i like 75% of what they do.

and the felt comparison is clutching at best

whilst, they emulate, the sounds they love, the strokes, my bloody valentine, primal scream, the byrds, felt, v.u. - they combine them in such a way, that is an edgy distance of being fans to being innovators...

doom-e, Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

INNOVATORS?

the man is so brazenly smitten with felt, I can only barely detect any trace of other (undoubted) references. Y'know, i have very warm feelings for the tyde, twice is currently sitting on my turntable (albeit not revolving) but even I have qualms about enjoying anything so insulated from the present. loving ballad of the band so much you feel compelled to re-write it every other song seems to be missing the point somehow.

haha that worked for Lawrence

Tepid tepid tepid. They take ZERO chances, go for everyman blues affectations, make Old 97s sound hard and whenever they stumble across a good melody (like "Get Around Too") they destroy it by playing it for at least 5 minutes too long.

Saw them awhile back opening up for Brian Jonestown Massacre and was pretty much underwhelmed. I haven't heard the album, but based on the show I'd rather listen to the current Lilys stuff.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 19 June 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, half those things I said about the Tyde could apply to Jonestown yet I love them. Hmm...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 19 June 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

What Chris Barrus said, only even more negative. Useless, useless band.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 June 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

aww. what do you guys know. i love them.

doom-e, Thursday, 19 June 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

beachwood sparks should be sunk in the same boat too. they aspire to mediocrity but don't quite manage it.

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 19 June 2003 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

ooo! clever-clever! touche!

doom-e, Friday, 20 June 2003 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

nice one keith. haha
i remember once listening to the lyrics at one of their shows. some kind of 'i know the ways of women and drugs, little girl' throwback to an early 70's sleazeball songwriter. maybe i caught an odd moment. but since then i've been creeped out by that guy.

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Friday, 20 June 2003 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

that's what i like! reasons and misquotations of lyrics!

doom-e, Friday, 20 June 2003 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
Is the new one getting a US release? I don't know if I like them enough to pay for an import.

svend (svend), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 23:19 (twenty years ago)
