this is a thread for all you hippie's kids to commiserate and share tales of woe, parents playing judy collins and joan baez on road trips, the uncle with the acoustic guitar, etc.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I get on my knees every night and thank God I was not one of these kids. Disco + Zep + Queen = thanx Mom & Dad!

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:19 (twenty-two years ago)

My dad is a folkie. If I never have to listen to another whining woman with a guitar again, I will be a happy girl! Christ, I think that's why I got so into distortion and signal processing and all abusing my guitar, so I could annoy his ears with my UGLY AWFUL SQUARE WAVES, MWAH HAH HAH HAH HAH!!!

kate (kate), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if my Mum still thinks I'll wake up one morning and get into classical.

I wonder if I will.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's gradually starting to dawn on my Mum that 26 years out of the 40 I've been on the planet can't easily be dismissed as "just a phase he's going through" any more.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep hoping I'll wake up and have cool taste in music, and I never do. :-(

kate (kate), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Mym mum's given up trying to keep up with what I'm into ever since Is topped wearing band t-shirts about five years ago. Her and dad no just dismiss it as "weird noise" whether it's Dave Brubeck or The Beatles or MBV.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

'real' music is giving me the thrills today: the new choral album, the aerons and '66 bob dylan is what i'm all about today!

doom-e, Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

'66 Bob Dylan is the most awesome example of self-manufacture in pop history, and he didn't need to cue people to it with a bogus stage name either (Ziggy who?)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Doomie, you have, like, the most retrofetishistic, WORST taste in the world, ever!

(this may or may not be joking, BTW)

kate (kate), Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I recently put together a CD for Father's Day for my dad. I went on Kazaa, and randomly typed in all these Italian rock n roll singers from the 60s (Adriano Celentano, Gianni Morandi, Nino D'Angelo, Little Tony). Anyway, the music's all really similar, as was all European attempts to copy rock n roll ("Hey hey, fare l'Americana con le whisky-soda hey hey!").

And then, it actually struck me: all this music sounds like "obscure" American bands that I have in my record collection now, and think I'm alternative for liking. And instead, they sound like the Italian versions of Des O'Connor and Englebert Humperdinck. Great.

eh? whatever. ooh. the air-conditioning is on the fritz. i'll record it through a vocoder and call it 'sound-art'! i'm an artist, me!

doom-e, Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

but was '66 dylan calculated? is justin timberlake the new bob dylan?

doom-e, Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, jangle-jangle, guitars are ace, some beach boys harmonies, I've got SOUL, I do, I'm a modern troubadour, me. BOR-RING!

kate (kate), Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Was 66 Dylan shite, is the question?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooo. I just brushed my teeth. The bristle make such a queer sound, I say. I will record it on the 1958 dictaphone and splice it up with rustling bedsheets! I'm a sound-artist, see.

doom-e, Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

this is a stupid thread.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Sigh. DNFTT.

kate (kate), Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

He was calculated alright I reckon but calculated on the fly like one of those idiot savant maths kids who can work out square roots in under 5 seconds.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"I keep hoping I'll wake up and have cool taste in music, and I never do."

What do you expect if you go to sleep listening to static on the radio every night?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

That the static fairy will magically come and take all my Radiohead albums away and make me somehow magically wake up and go "Aphex Twin and John Coltrane are GRATE!!!"

kate (kate), Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

'66 Bob Dylan is the most awesome example of self-manufacture in pop history, and he didn't need to cue people to it with a bogus stage name either

I'm kind of beside myself here.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

haha! Dylan didn't need no stage name ma-an!

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 19 June 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Robert Allen Zimmerman = Bob Dylan ?!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 19 June 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

no way man!

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 19 June 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, so bob dylan was as "manufactured" as david bowie or any hair-metal/alterna-grunge/boyband that ever existed. which makes for interesting reading and thinking, but not so interesting listening. at least not for my 2003 ears, anyway.

there sure have been a lot of red herrings flopping around on ILM lately, haven't there been?

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 June 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay Tad who speaks the truth re: Dylan. Well, my truth. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 June 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I read the title of this thread as "When will we get sick of RealPlayer?" (Answer: About five minutes after it has been installed.)
