C90: Faking It

Here's the scenario. You have a mate who is a '12 CD person', and is about to appear on Channel 4's "Faking It" as a cutting edge style journalist. You have to make them a tape which will, in 90 minutes, give them a working knowledge of achingly trendy music so they can bluff their way past the judges on that subject at least. What's on it?

(The hidden question here: how difficult is it actually to have 'cool taste in music'?)

Ask the Static Fairy.

In fact, tell ME because I'm sick of feeling ashamed of my taste in music.

kate (kate), Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha Kate your "wake up in the morning and have cool taste" was what inspired the thread!

(Of course you could be mean and put all non-hip musick on there.)

About this I---I much.

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, Static Fairy, make me hate Radiohead. Because I try and I try, but every time I want to hate them, I listen and end up rolling around on my back like a baby mewling "but it SOUNDS so good!"

kate (kate), Thursday, 19 June 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The key to being achingly trendy is just listing bands that none of the judges have ever actually heard of. Because as soon as anyone outside the Elite have heard of/appreciate them, they cease to be bleeding edge. It is a self defeating snake eating its own tail, to want to be hip and cool.

But goddammit it, I wish I could be Cool for just once in my life.

I'm going back to singing along with the server now. Sigh.

Putting any one of those artists that Doomie lists would automatically show our Faking It person up as a Faker. NEXT!

kate (kate), Thursday, 19 June 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Who isnt a faker?

doom-e, Thursday, 19 June 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I want the Static Fairy to make me COOL, not turn me into an edgy style wanker!

kate (kate), Thursday, 19 June 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

You have to spot the next trend. So I am rooting for

I'm so deeply uncool I don't even know who that is. :-(

kate (kate), Thursday, 19 June 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh heh. I actually met that guy, so I'm the coolest person in the world

dave q, Thursday, 19 June 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Start with Merzbow's Stacey Q remix. (This actually exists.)

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 19 June 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

If it exists, it can't be cool, Douglas.

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 19 June 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The next big musician is Robert Pires?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 19 June 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Merzbow's Stacey Q remix

I must hear this.

Give the "cutting edge style journalist" the last 2 Colette comps.

disco stu (disco stu), Thursday, 19 June 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

My plan would be: make the person listen to tracks by the Stooges, "Acid Traxx," Eric B. and Rakim, The Normal, Gang of Four, etc. Train him to associate the name of each new band with the appropriate predecessor, allowing him to say "Well, _____ is alright, I guess, but obviously that whole thing was done best back when [insert canonized predecessor] were going."

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 19 June 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Alternately: "This genre's been in serious decline over the past decade -- you'd have to be a fool to think ________ have anything on the innovation and vitality of [insert etc.]"

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 19 June 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

A similar, but easier plan would be to have him say - "Fuck all that shit. [Genre] is dead. Give me a Roxette CD and a lobotomy and I'll tell you what I think of music|music journalism."

Because attitude is far more important than knowledge, duh.
