Is the 'original' mix of "Never Leave You" the Diwali riddim one? What other mixes should I look for?

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 20 June 2003 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Forgive me for asking but would you mind explaining what you are talking about? It all seems very interesting, if overly abbreviated, so I'd appreciate you letting me in on the secret:)

Qns = questions
Thanx = thanks

Spizzazz = Spizzazz, a weblog

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 20 June 2003 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

is Diwali riddim really the general term for describing the beat of this track (and others)? just curious

stevem (blueski), Friday, 20 June 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Well it's the name of the beat yes.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 20 June 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i know it sounds clearly influenced by Indian beats, but why Diwali?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 20 June 2003 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Blimey I don't know ask Lenky!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 20 June 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

aye aye cap'n

stevem (blueski), Friday, 20 June 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yes the orig is diwali as far as I know but the diff is the orig only has the lumidee bit while the remix has guest rap verses.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 20 June 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yes the original is diwali but is labeled as the remix on the 12" for some reason... but yeah on the album it is the diwali version (and i havent heard any others, however there is a song called 'honestly' on the album which has a lot of the same lyrics).
keep an eye out for lumidee's version of 'crazy in love' and esp her freestyle over the 'one for peedi crack' beat.
on the album i like 'my last thug','crashin a party' ft n.o.r.e. (at the v end she says 'i got the whole world singing offkey'!), and 'go with me' ft handsome joe best. all the production on the album is on a similar sparse tip to the pared back version of diwali she uses.

minna (minna), Friday, 20 June 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i prefer the one which is just her and ultra minimial above all the others

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i am completely captivated by everything she does!

minna (minna), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Minna give me more info about the album eg. quality and details.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Also i thought the spizzazzz stuff was excellent too!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the lumidee album........ it's funny what a fine line there is between incredibly charming moments and songs that just don't work. like, the songs are for the most part pretty similar but some of them are great and some are not so great... the duller ones clog up the album and make it seem repetitive because the sonic palate is limited (minimalist beats w guitar, piano, that's about it, repeating melodic motifs - often w a latin feel - lumidee is from spanish harlem). the mood doesn't change much from the default sombre/melancholy especially not in the second half.
overall i still like it tho... i need to think more about how to say what works positively.

minna (minna), Monday, 23 June 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i wouldn't say the album is disappointing because it's almost exactly what i expected

minna (minna), Monday, 23 June 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

seven months pass...
i prefer the one which is just her and ultra minimial above all the others

Reviving to say I rather agree with this. Both versions are good but it's the slight drifty echo of her voice above the beat and extra pulse that's a killer.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The ultraminimal version is the better one, yes, except its basically a copy of "Iko Iko" by the Dixie Cups, which is one of the best songs ever.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"Iko Iko" + "Sally Go 'Round the Roses," I'd say.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 1 February 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

We could do with a thread on "Iko Iko", really, except it'd get about 1 response.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 1 February 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

the album is bad

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Sunday, 1 February 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

bad meaning bad

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Sunday, 1 February 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...
I wonder if Lumidee is worth seeing live Friday night at H2O in Washington DC? Live music always starts so late there. I did not even realize she was back.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 02:24 (nineteen years ago)

you haven't heard her 'she's like the wind' cover in which the vocal duties are actually mostly taken on by some other dude?

you haven't missed much, sad to say.

maura, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, maybe I have heard that.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 03:22 (nineteen years ago)

Just watched the video on youtube. Yea, it is rather dull.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 03:28 (nineteen years ago)

What are the 2007 ultraminimalist"Never leave You"/ "Iko Iko" goes to Jamaica songs?

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

they usually emerge in the summer, these quasi-dancehall things, lumidee/rihanna/nina sky, but if you're looking for some very chilly, very minimalist winter r&b, natasha is your girl, with 'so sick' and 'hey hey hey'
