I need something substantive to read over the coarse of a week/month, yet indie enough for me to feel good about my marginalization, but not so obscure that I feel cowed by its hipness.

magnet.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 21 June 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

playboy had that babes of indie rock thing right? thats good enough for me. actually if im gonna read playboy, i may as well go the whole hog and pick up bangkok chick-boys as well

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Saturday, 21 June 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I had some friends in Bangkok. They confirm that it really is hard to tell the difference between chicks and boys. So difficult, in fact, that sometimes you just don't care.

ok to be honest I just need something for my marathon bathroom movements.

Leee (Leee), Saturday, 21 June 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

ok in that case you can print out pitchfork from the net and use it to wipe with afterwards

Punk Planet is a good 'un.

The Big Takeover.

I just read Magnet for the first time a cople of weeks ago (Interpol cover), and I must say I was very impressed - I only wish the UK had a homegrown mag of comparable quality.

So yes, Magnet.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 22 June 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I just tried Magnet--because Jack of the Big Takeover (the best mag going) said it was good!

Well, it wasn't.

The main article on Peter Yorn made me want to kill both him--whose music I don't even KNOW much less dislike--and especially the hack-ass writer. And then there's the Liz Phair one-pager...

John 2, Sunday, 22 June 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

you shouldn't take jack rabid's opinion to heart on anything.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 22 June 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, whuzzup with Pete Yorn and Tom Petty getting on the cover of Magnet? Frankly, I couldnt care much about the mag (Big Takeover is way more interesting and idiosyncratic), but after all their last page "Smashmouth = Pepsi = DIE, DIE!" kinda bullcrap you think they wouldn't be hyping PETE YORN.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 22 June 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, Punk Planet's the best of everything mentioned, easy.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 22 June 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Keith, I pretty much always listen to the guy. He's got great taste.

And yeah, Punk Planet is good, but it's so much about politics and not music, so it satisfies different needs. Besides, they always write about those shitty emo bands...

John 2, Wednesday, 25 June 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Punk planet is a great mag, but not for the music.
If you like a very narrow band of political, punk, emo stuff the music coverage is okay though, and they cover lots of music made by women and lesbians gay which is nice.

I tend to really hate magnet because they give a positive review to pretty much every indie rock record released every month. It gets extremely tedious. If you would like to read a mag where you will recognize about 5% of the names, I suggest the Wire.
If you want something funny, Chunklet usually delivers.
Personally, I read Spin and Rolling Stone, which I'm sure everyone hates.

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, i didn't really read the question completely, but Chunklet is good

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Magnet hasn't excited me much for a few years now, but I'm not sure they give a good review to every indie release -- they even went and smacked down the Postal Service last month.

My problem with them tends to be that their review selection skirts "major" indie releases and instead packs itself full of exactly the kind of average knockaround rock screamers I never ever go for. They need to just go ahead and add a back section headed "Bands from North Carolina Who Sound Like the Make-Up or the Grifters."

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

(Also the old-man prog thing accounts for a few too many reviews.)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

you need ARTHUR - http://www.arthurmag.com
