Best & Worst Album Art of 2003 so far

A little weird band called The C*nts has a cartoon of two pink poodles screwing. It's so great. I think the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' cover is a monstrosity (in a bad way). Others??

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 23 June 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I kinda like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs cover, actually.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 23 June 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Goldfrapp's 'Black Cherry' to thread (it got some criticism on here i seem to recall)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 23 June 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate to do it, but under "WORST" I'm-a hafta cite.....

To have been away for six years and then come back with a MUSTARD YELLOW sleeve that could easily be mistaken for an Insane Clown Posse album is T R A G I C.

What I've heard from it so far, however, is fuckin' BRILLIANT, and that's what matters, at the end of the day.

I also think THIS cover art is completely dire....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 23 June 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, that reminds me of those poetry fridge magnets.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 23 June 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I rather like the cover of "Elephant" by the White Stripes, and the blood-red artwork on "Executioner's Last Songs Vol 2&3". That new Russian Futurists album is pretty nice in a weird way, don't know why i like it. "Dragging Wonder Lake" by Janet Bean and the Concertina Wire is good, too.

That Yeah Yeah Yeahs one is fairly weak, though I like the album. Don't like "thickfreakness" by the Black Keys, and Jay-Z's "Blueprint 2" (is that '03?) isn't even trying.

Better than Vol 1

Looks like a painting you'd find at a Holiday Inn sale, but it works for me.

Strictly cover-art-wise.......

Good:
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00008J4P5.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00008VAJE.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

I haven't heard a note off that Electric Six album, but the cover art alone cracks me up. Bless'em.

Crap:

Zwan owns in the ugliness sweepstakes, altough this one is up there too:http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00008OWZG.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
And this one just screams "Mid-life Crisis!"
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00009OOH9.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
(which has to be a an honor of sorts)

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Monday, 23 June 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know how to post album covers on these threads, but somebody should put up the covers of *Turn In Your Friends and Neighbors* by the Living Things and *Shapes of Venus* by the Clone Defects. Not sure if those are my favorites, but I like both of them a lot; might even like the backs or insides better than the front covers, who knows? So whoever posts them should post that stuff too, if possible.

chuck, Monday, 23 June 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

As a longtime midlife crisiser myself, I have no problem at all with Liz Phair's album cover. Midlife crises should be ENCOURAGED, as far as I'm concerned. Though my friend Jen did point out that, in lots of those photos (including the front), you can look right up Liz's nose.

chuck, Monday, 23 June 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

you can look right up Liz's nose

You could on her first album too. Wonder why she chose that particular pose.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 23 June 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: What's the golden head thing?

The Mars Volta

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 23 June 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

not sure how to post covers either, but the shapes of venus cover *is* pretty sweet. and, yes, the mars volta sleeve *is* revolting, in a kinda ill-advised, faux-storm thorgeson (sp?) way...

stevie (stevie), Monday, 23 June 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, speaking of Thorgenson, that Audioslave cover is mighty awful as well.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 23 June 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

That Zwan cover looks like a rejected logo for Woodstock 2010.

The thing about the Russian Futurists cover is, umm . . . is it just me or is that mountain lion giving you sort of a sexy look? He's like Michael Jackson on the cover of Thriller, like the whole thing is full of mountain-lion Quiet Storm sex-you-down ballads.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 23 June 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.intheredrecords.com/media/covers/CDcover.jpg

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 23 June 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The Mars Volta cover WAS done by Thorgenson. I vote for the Deftones self-titled CD cover as WORST, because I think the CD is a secret gem that could easily extend the band's fanbase beyond the world of rap-rock inanity. BEST: Neon Hunk's "Smarmymob" (though I'm taking into consideration the flourescentorange jewelcase on that one).

Ben Boyer, Monday, 23 June 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I like any album cover that reminds me I'm Cat Power free.

Boyer, the Deftones ALWAYS sounded like the Cure trying to get an SUV through a mudpit (and occasionally screaming in exasperation).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 23 June 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

>> Boyer, the Deftones ALWAYS sounded like the Cure trying to get an SUV through a mudpit (and occasionally screaming in exasperation). <<

I agree wholeheartedly, Miccio (Only to me, that sounds like a huge selling point!)

and the Metallica one is indeed hilariously bad

willem (willem), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is hilarious, hooray!

Willem, I do wonder with album covers like the Metallica one - and late Rolling Stones covers, too. You'd think they'd have more money to come up with something better. Yet they reliably cover their records with what looks like the kind of thing you come up with when you're sitting for your art exam at school, only cool if you're male and 14.

Hey, now I think I understand!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe they (you/I ?) think it's cool again when you're 41. maybe a restrained clutching fist embodies the feelings (anger?) that come along with a mid-life crisis. chuck, could you fill us in on that?

still, surely there are more aesthetic ways to portray such emotions...

willem (willem), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

What's swrong with that Cher one? I think it's quite pretty.

It's been said before, but this

http://www.k7.com/images/large/k7147cd_cover_big.jpg

is a terrible sleeve, which is a shame, cos the album is one of my favourites of 2003.

ps chuck, just cut'n'paste the image url into yr message and put an i directly before the http (no space). bob's yer uncle.

Rubbish art, great album:

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The best album sleeve of the year is Massive Attack's 100th Window. The cover itself is gorgeous - the inner sleeve/booklet is a bit nasty, though. Also, the new Bent album is beautifully designed, as was Programmed to Love.

The worst.... undoubtedly Goldfrapp's unspeakably horrible 'Black Cherry'. Designed by Stevie Wonder, that one. The Metallica, Annie Lennox and Radiohead ones deserve a special mention for crimes against graphic design, too. But then, Radiohead album sleeves have never ever been anything but utterly woeful.

Colin S Barrow - your comments on the Metallica sleeve - absolutely spot on.

The Zwan sleeve is gorgeous, I think.

russ t, Tuesday, 24 June 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

About the White Stripes cover, do Americans even know what cricket is?

mei (mei), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I like 'Black Cherry'! Suits the album particularly well actually.. And the inner booklet photos are great

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt DC - what is the blue and pink one? It's gorgeous. (and Junior Senior - I quite like it...)

russ t, Tuesday, 24 June 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the Junior Senior cover. Like the Pig Lib cover too.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I like this one:

can't think of anything EXCEPTIONALLY bad yet.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

That Black Keys cover reminds me of the Spanish version of "Sticky Fingers" except its reversed, with the hand coming out of the can.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

This is going to sound ridiculous, but Beyonce's navel is highly unattractive.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 30 June 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

That Radiohead cover is so horrid, it actually stopped me from buying the album the other day - I was about to, b/c I have liked all the others mostly - and I stared at it and thought, can an album cover like that really hold anything I'll enjoy hearing? No, probably not.

daria g (daria g), Monday, 30 June 2003 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The Radiohead cover is fantastic (nb - I can't actually listen to Radiohead because I get a stomachache when I hear that guy sing).

However! It is a total rip off of the Peter Davies painting 'The Fun One Hundred' which appeared at the Sensation show in Brooklyn (and other Saatchi shows in Britain, I'm assuming):

http://www.eyestorm.com/saatchi/images/large/davies_fun100.jpg

and a detail:
http://www.eyestorm.com/saatchi/images/large/davies_detail.gif

(Davies painting is likely a rip of something else, but I suspect the Radiohead designer must have been familiar with the painting...)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 30 June 2003 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the first thing it reminded me of was Punk magazine's Top 99 - - though I'm sure there's a much more specific precedent

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 30 June 2003 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like the Autechre one, they've had some ace covers in their time. The Radiohead one is really cack and it's impossible to imagine that the best cover they've come up with so far was the one for "The Bends". Their last few really haven't felt, to me, like proper covers at all - more like details from a bigger picture. Album covers should be iconic and vibrant and not relying too much on small details like "HTTT" does.

My favourite cover at the moment is Melechesh's "Sphynx", but sadly I couldn't find a jpg. If anyone can post a pic up, I would be really grateful. And also if someone coukld post a pic of Radioactive Man's "Booby Trap", that's my worst cover at the mo.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 30 June 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

That Mars Volta record cover is absolutely hideous!

I'm going to have to disagree with the person above who didn't like the cover of Pig Lib. I don't think it's an amazing cover or anything, but I like it enough. It's a pretty typical SM/Pave kind of cover. Aside from the first solo/Jicks album's front cover, Malkmus has been pretty consistent in his career in terms of sleeve covers.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that Peter Gabriel's head on the cover of the Mars Volta record?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I mentioned this on another thread, but this def. goes on the worst list:

That's a good one, right? The inner sleeve is even better.

This one is another goodie:

Not sure if soundtacks counts, but the cover to the vinyl version of the soundtrack to "Lost in Translation" is very striking, and the CD version is not so shabby either:

(for the record, the cover of the vinyl version is a still from the scene of Scarlett Johansson laying on the bed in her underwear that opens the movie, when the opening credits are rolling)
