Daft Punk's "Digital Love" -- C/D?

For my money, a stone-cold classic. Have seen it described as a marriage between Supertramp and the Buggles -- it really doesn't get less hip than that. Really.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

the greatest song of the 21st century so far. tell me what's better.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

One More Time is better

ryan (ryan), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

madness.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

two reasons why not: a.) robot disco is good but robot love songs are better and b.) no vocoded country-metal guitar solo

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm. you may be right. the guitar solo is really what tips the scales tho.

ryan (ryan), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Lest we forget the Gap ad w/ Juliette Lewis and the DP two robots expressing their love for her w/ their LCDs...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

And I am no fan of JL, but it is brilliant...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"Get Ur Freak On" is better. beyond that, nothing

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Breathing, classic or dud?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, exactly!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I missing something? Breathing?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

No, you're not missing anything. Breathing's totally overrated, just another sub-par bodily function these jackasses only drool over out of desperate respiratorophilia.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

We're perverted that way.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Are we actually comparing judging the act of breathing to judging this song? Am I just ignorant? Slow? Retarded?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

dud. "Around The World" was way better. though I like this song more than any of the other monotonous pseudo-pop on Discovery, so maybe the dud is more of a protest dud.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

(NTI, I think Ned's figure of speech was meant to suggest that loving "Digital Love" is as basic and obvious and natural as breathing.)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Digital Shame -- an emotion I feel at this moment.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, the world needs less "Digital Love" and more "Underneath Your Clothes."

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

It's as natural as anything digital, I'll admit.

Matos, duh.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"duh" is exactly the right word, Anthony

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess "duh" is what Ned meant.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I kinda figured you'd find my preference not smart enough.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm beginning to think maybe I should have said nothing. Doubtless most would agree. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

you! over there in california! shut up!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Not me, Ned. You're insights into the value of oxygen usage are worth their price in gold.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Weight, that is. Duh...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

you! over there in california! shut up!

*cries*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud, as was that "Discovery" piece of shite.

ham on rye (ham on rye), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - I knew this would be a nu-ilm show dem tru colours thread

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

exhibit a in the people vs. corny indie fuxx

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

If it makes anyone feel any better, I like Kylie and Basement Jaxx.

ham on rye (ham on rye), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny - first time I heard it I thought it was kinda crappy.
Then I realised that it is in fact the apex of human cultural achievement - millenia of civilisation climaxing on one record.

doctorB, Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i seriously use this record as a yardstick for friendships

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

not Rush's "Fly By Night"?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh hang on i have this song on one of my CDRs here. *listens* mmmm this is very good indeed

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I realized how wonderful my girlfriend is when I discovered our mutual love for this song.

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm disappointed that this song and not Discovery was the subject. My anger is much, MUCH greater for the album as a whole. The song is fine, really, though in the context of the album it's just another cheese achin'-to-be.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 26 June 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

FACE TO FACE!!!

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 26 June 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

mmm...Todd Edwards coproduction...

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 26 June 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic, classic, classic! This song completely sold the album for me-even when it sags, I just happily think to myself "This album has 'Digital Love', what the fuck else do I want?" (and I also get 'One More Time', 'Aerodynamic', 'Harder Better Faster Stronger', 'Crescendolls', 'Face To Face'...)

Also classic-watching the Autobot City massacre in Transformers: The Movie with 'Digital Love' on headphones, which is as close to enjoying the track in a 'natural habitat' without watching the video or Ulysses 31.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 26 June 2003 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

they built a radio that picks up memory <|corn>

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Thursday, 26 June 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Andy K makes a damn good point but Face to Face as fantastic as it is is too serious to be as downright amazing on every level as Digital Love.

It ripped up almost everything bangalter/daft punk/french house had ever done with just one song. In this sense the "they're joking around" thing may have some truth, ie they're setting out to rip whatever they've done before to pieces. But I don't think it alienated any fans either, despite the odd defected type.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 26 June 2003 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Narrowly behind 'Get Yr Freak On' as song of the century so far but not by very much at all and I might well change my mind tomorrow

dave q, Thursday, 26 June 2003 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

'Face to Face' seconded. the sound cut-ups and edits really make this the funkiest, tightest, piece of music I've heard since, say, Funkadelic, although sounding completely different.
I also remember hearing 'Harder, Faster, Better, Stronger' and thinking that for the first time I was aware of hearing something like I'd never heard before. The part where the refrain turns into a solo was/still is pure euphoria..

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Thursday, 26 June 2003 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic, and the Digital Love + Get Yr Freak On as 2 best songs of the century is also true, but I would add Weak Become Heroes tot he list as well, coz good things always come in 3s

Robin Goad (rgoad), Thursday, 26 June 2003 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

digital love best song ever etc etc etc, because...

"The vocoded voice only draws attention to the distance between *you* and her even more. She's never going to love you, for gods sake, you've got a stupid robot voice for a start.

Perhaps my favourite part of Digital Love is the plaintive cry of "why don't you play the game?", dreaming just isn't enough, it has to be real, why can't she make it real? It feels unbearably sad."

but its that sad that then says, fuck it, because the mitsu is just arriving into place, and you rush, and you say yeeeahhh

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 26 June 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

This is like when I asked if "Give it to You" is a classic or a dud. We all know the answer (and it is "Love").

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 26 June 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

another nice touch - the sound at the start (before the synth and guitar come in) is also the sound at the end...like you've just been on a trip somewhere for three minutes and now you're back where you started but forever changed, or something.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 26 June 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

in a curious twist of fate, I was at Matos' recently boxed up living room with zebra stripe "doors" last night. so, uh, congrats on the imminent move.

abeta, Thursday, 26 June 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

It IS sad! Especially the :x's at the end.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

ken that's brilliant. and it gives me all kinds of stupid stupid ideas...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I would have killed myself by now if I had the mindstate to dislike this song.

djdee2005, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

JEDIL'S ADVOCATE!!!!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

amazing record. I think I probably prefer "So Much Love To Give" or "Together", but fuck it I love all their stuff.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

classic.

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Friday, 12 November 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Gimme a break, Aaron, you're entirely misinterpreting what I said and trying to turn me into this guilty white strawman which is not only shortsighted and reductive but flat out lazy.

i just realized that the phrase "digital love" means masturbation. intentional?

a banana (alanbanana), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:12 (twenty-one years ago)

haha classic post from me in this thread.

(Obviously this remains top 3 song evah.)

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Typically, I guess, I hadn't realized that either (about masturbation).

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I really do never tire of it.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Been into it steadily since I was about 12.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I never realized this either! Makes sense with the video and the single cover art:

http://transbenik.free.fr/Daft/digital.JPG

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 February 2005 06:15 (twenty-one years ago)

This song is classic. Really was surprised how many times I could play it in a row without tiring of it. Never been convinced a whole album of them would be of interest to me, though.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Thursday, 3 February 2005 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

oh god, this is yummy. in fact, now i've got something for the compare-songs-to-food thread.

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 3 February 2005 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I love that weird sidetrack about my breathing comment way up there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 February 2005 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

This song is only slightly less overrated than "Toxic".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 February 2005 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Hehehe. (I agree with you about "Toxic," that's for goddamn sure.)

I stick by my 'breathing: classic or dud?' joke in that to me it feels so very easy to like and appreciate. I don't think I've ever gone bugfuck crazy "YAY!" over it but it always just very nicely works, it hits a spot that envisions what late 70s AOR would have been if it had also been disco-insane.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 February 2005 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Just to counter the throwaway meh's:

This is the greatest song of the 21st Century (and bests almost every song from the 20th Century as well).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd say top 3 (but a bit too retro to be #1)

i don't get how 'digital love = masturbation' - can someone spell it out to me?

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Thursday, 3 February 2005 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Last night I had a dream about you" = "All I have to do is dream..."

Also, in the video he's lying in bed looking at a poster of the girl of his dream mounted directly over the bed. The single cover shows a red glowing love button. A digit is a finger. um...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 February 2005 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

And all the teenage bedroom guitar soloing...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 February 2005 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

But it doesn't have to be about that.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 February 2005 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Fingers can also be called "digits". Do I need to go on?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The "game" in "why don't you play the game?" is the soggy biscuit game.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

the bit where he goes 'ohhh' = premature ejac

i dug this tune up for a mix i was making and wound up listening to it like 20 times in a row, which i rarely do. much like i did when i first bought discovery, actually... so, classic, i totally <3 this song. i want to learn to shred on guitar just so i can play that solo!

messiahwannabe, Friday, 12 March 2010 08:41 (sixteen years ago)

Bump because y'all are missing out if you think that's just a talking-heads podcast.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 March 2010 14:42 (sixteen years ago)

This was v. nicely put together. But ...who is it that puts together an hour long paean to Digital Love, and doesn't even mention the guitar solo ONCEL? waht????

(especially when so much of it seems to be dedicated to trying to prove that the lyrics are silly. like, really?)

nah i'm pretty sure the only time it's really even in the thing is where like 10 seconds of it are (is?) played right before a Peter Frampton sample. and then they talk about the live set.

HPSCHD, Friday, 12 March 2010 16:51 (sixteen years ago)

<quote>who is it that puts together an hour long paean to Digital Love, and doesn't even mention the guitar solo ONCEL? waht????</quote>

That would be me! But no, your point is very well taken. It's short-shrifted, for sure. I think there is a mention of the keytar, but it should have been more thoroughly examined.

And BTW, the Steve Winwood mention in this thread is what prompted me to check out that track and make use of it. I was trawling the web for material, and that was certainly a good find.
