So I recently heard a Love song in the grocery store... it was even interrupted by a page: "Stacy, cleanup on aisle four..." It was followed by an Eagles song.

Have you ever heard a song delightfully out of context? No, I'm not talking about Nick Drake in a VW ad, but something so strange, so startling, that it sounded fresh again?

I was at a Chinese buffet last week and they were playing some distinctly Oriental sounding flute music. Then I realized the melody being played was "From A Distance." That was fucked up. I've also heard muzak versions of "Don't Go Back To Rockville" and "Runaway Train," which both sounded rather perverse.

I heard the same song once while I was folding girls' tops in the back of a department store. Surreal.

Similar to Andy's experience, I was grocery shopping when I heard Van Halen's "Dance the Night Away" come over the PA. "She's on fire/barely a beginner/but just watch that lady price check on a jar of strained peas"

Strangely enough, I also heard "Alone Again Or" in an upstate NY grocery store a couple years back. I was shocked and it got me to thinkin' who the hell programs these playlists.

i was cashiering at a grocery store one sunday. it was just after noon, so all the churchgoers were raushing into the store to get their groceries and "modern love" by bowie came on. it just kinda seemed right.

I heard VU's "Sunday Morning" in a moderately fancy restaurant in Granada, Spain a few years ago.

And speaking of grocery store announcements, the Wild Oats in Pasadena (and perhaps elsewhere) plays these tones to interrupt the music before an announcement, and every time I hear them I'm reminded of that Grand Funk RR song "Ride Captain, Ride." It sounds just like the guitar bit at the start of the song.

you mean blues image.

muzak version of quicksilver messenger service "edward the mad shirt grinder" heard in a taco bell in the mid-'70s. no lie.

You are correct sir! All these years I was thinking it was an uncharacteristic GFR song.
