Can anyone recommend a good downloadable MP3 player?

My work computer has a built-in RealOne Player that plays MP3s; unfortunately, it plays them at roughly 125% of their normal speed. I'd like to be able to listen to my MP3-CDRs at normal speed while working; can anyone recommend something?

winamp

Definitely Winamp. It's got the least clunky interface, I find.

or musicmatch

gaz (gaz), Friday, 27 June 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

musicmatch is good but it can be slow

i have to look closer at winamp. can you convert mac encoded files (what're they called?) to .mp3 with it?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 27 June 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

just d/l'ed winamp and it sounds smashing. thanks, guys!

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 27 June 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

matos in mp3 land! yay! can you download and, er, upload too?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 27 June 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I think maybe both. we'll see soon.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 27 June 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

GODDAMN IT they're still playing 125% speed. fuck fuck fuck.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 27 June 2003 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

that's weird...is there a pitch control?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 27 June 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe they are still on NY time.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 27 June 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

NO!!

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 27 June 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds like it's likely something with your sound card rather than the mp3 player. Might be worth getting the latest drivers for it. When I tried to play DVD's in my drive here at work I had the same problem of sound at the wrong speed. I think I checked for Microsoft updates and downloaded a sound related one that fixed it.

actually i've found the recent versions of winamp to be HUGE and bloated, and it seemed to have a memory leak the last time i tried it (3 months ago) - running winamp for over an hour would cause my system to eventually slow down and need a reboot. i now use QCD Player - so tiny, dandy interface, skinnable, etc. etc. - now i can listen all day with no needless restarts, and my less-than-robust amount of RAM is happier too!

Always always download winamp 2, not 3. Version 3 bites.

And yes, Matos, it's the sound card driver. I've had this problem, too.

This is definitely true, I was really disappointed with Winamp 3, but they've made the latest 2.* version easily available too.
I seem to remember them referring to it as classic Winamp.
Ah yes: http://classic.winamp.com/

You guys are right about 2 vs. 3 -- what especially annoys me is how difficult it is to access file information.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 27 June 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

But if you want an interface with one-pixel-wide buttons, a steep learning curve, and a groovy HR Gieger skin, Winamp 3 is for you!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 27 June 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

thank you all! and sorry for snapping at you Gaz

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 28 June 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

...um, so how do I get a new sound card driver? I'm completely tech illiterate

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 28 June 2003 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I could help more on this one. I think I fixed it by accident.

But you should start by finding out the make and model of the sound card itself, probably by looking at it. Then Google search for a driver.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 28 June 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

This freaked me out: when my sound card was playing fast, it played even *streaming* audio fast. Which means it could see into the future, I guess.

(Of course, what it probably means is that I have only the loosest grasp on how streaming audio works.)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 28 June 2003 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

looking at it? where is it located? (I'm fucking useless at this stuff)

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 28 June 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It's... inside.

Someone else to thread.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 28 June 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It's okay that you're technically incompetent, Matos. You've obviously been focusing on writing instead.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 28 June 2003 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

lotta fucking good that's done me

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 28 June 2003 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, sure. You only write for the Voice. You're so lame, I swear. Dude, I would run over my grandmother for your job.

(PS - say the word, and I'll make your blog page look better. It needs help.)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 28 June 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry. That was rude. I'm sorry I'm so rude.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 28 June 2003 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos, what version of Windows do you have? (I'm assuming you have a PC.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 28 June 2003 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

you snapped at me? i was drunk so...

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 28 June 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Windows 2000 Professional, Mike, on a Dell computer

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 29 June 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Go to your Control Panel, click on Sounds and Audio Devices, then click on Hardware. You soundcard's proper name and company of manufacture should be listed when you select that item and click Properties.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Sunday, 29 June 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

what Control Panel? where is it located?

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 29 June 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It's under My Computer.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Sunday, 29 June 2003 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

d/l'ed one onto my desktop. now what?

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 29 June 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

make sweet love to it

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 29 June 2003 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It should come with a self-install function. If it doesn't, there should be a step-by-step on manufacturer's web site.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Sunday, 29 June 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

installed it, nothing has changed, still plays mp3s too fast. I give up. thanks anyway

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 29 June 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, now what you do is, buy a new computer. I recommend something with at least 1g processor speed.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 29 June 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

update: the guys at my work fixed it. thanks everyone!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

What about now? Any new awesome mp3 players for Windows?
