Better predominantly Latino band from Cali -- Los Lobos from the south, or Deftones from the north?

if the Deftones had a horn player (and aren't you surprised "The National Anthem" didn't inspire more psuedo-experimental rockers to add horns?!?!) they would TOTALLY win this. But for now Los Lobos wins because the singers aren't so sloooooooooooooooooooooww.

I guess I need to represent my new home and go with the slooooooooooow. The new album's pretty good, too.

though I stick with LL, I admit that I know of no LL songs as good as "Minerva" or "Change In The House Of Flies." But that might be becasue I'm young and slightly Cure-fanish (I'm sure folkx like xgau and the like could point out numerous LL songs better than the two Deftones epics I mentioned).

i've never really thought of the deftones as "latino rock." while you really can't escape that thought with los lobos.

since i have a serious allergy towards anything even vaguely "roots-rock," i've pretty much avoided los lobos -- perhaps unfairly, but that's the way it is. and since the deftones seem to be one of the few nu-metal groups who've done anything worth listening to (white pony sounds better now than when it was released, and it was pretty good even then), i guess i gotta go with them.

Kiko by Los Lobos is a truly excellent album and not too rootsy, mainly due to Mitchell Froom's production.

I have never listened to the deftones and am still a little bewildered by some of the overseas critical raves for them as their reputation out here plants them squarely in the meathead limp bizkut bin. This may be unfounded though.

the "respectable nu-metal" tag will stick even more when people realize the lyrics are basically a concept album about falling in love/worshipping/crying about a female rock musician. Since she collabo'd on Chino Moreno's yet to show up Team Sleep album, I like to pretend it's about Mary Timony.

there's this hysterical interview with them in Blender where the writer keeps talking about what a sensitive poet Moreno is, though his every sentence contains the word shit or fuck.

i've only heard a few track from the deftones new one, but i'll have to go with them 'cause i love adrenaline so much.

it's possible that Los Lobos could be much bigger stars if they were more pretentious.

they're easily one of my favorite bands, although i'll freely admit that i'm very much a "roots-rock" person, am swayed by their sentimentality, and David Hidalgo's voice does it for me alone.

one of my favorite songs is "One Time One Night," a Springsteen-without-"Springsteen" (sorta like Spielberg-without-"Spielberg") song that loses Bruce's lyrical craft but comes off more, how you say, authentic (lived-in?) and has a wonderful Chet Atkins-style guitar figure.

i've never really thought of the deftones as "latino rock." while you really can't escape that thought with los lobos

you might like them better if you think of them as just "rock 'n roll" (which may be the same thing as "latino rock"? and that's part of the idea?), of which they are a great exponent. but maybe you don't like "rock 'n roll" that much?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 28 June 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I never really thought of Los Lobos as "latino rock" either. When posing the question, I was trying to compare two bands comprised almost entirely of Latino members that have done everything possible to eschew inevitable stereotypes.

Please to see "One Time One Night" namechecked, as it's probably my favorite Los Lobos song.

Los Lobos. Saw them live recently and there is now possible way that the Deftones could be better. I don't mean that as a slight to them, but Los Lobos are simply one of America's finest bands by a mile.

Doubtless.
