SO HORRIBLE TERRIBLE

I was listening to NPR on the way home today and this woman was talking (with extremely good and practiced diction) about combining traditinal Irish folk music with flamenco and jazz ideas. Then they played a song of hers. It was the worst sound I have ever heard in my entire life that I can remember. It was even worse than that Kid Rock/Sheryl Crow duet. I can't imagine meeting anybody who would actually listen to and enjoy that shit. Right now I am trying to convince myself that it was all a strange nightmare brought on by driving a black car with leather seats in 91 degree weather, but I am afraid this is not the case. My brain is not capable of concocting such sheer awfulness. My psyche has been scarred.

The point of this thread of course is to warn you all that such music exists that will rot your soul and doom you forever. If you ever have a similar experience you must come to this thread and post a similar warning, so that the rest of us can safeguard ourselves.

"Extremely good and practiced diction" is the BEST way I've ever heard to offer faint praise to every single NPR commentary. EVER. Don't get me wrong, living in DC made me a total NPR geek, but I hate the commentaries. Malkmus was probably listening to one when he came up with "Fight This Generation."

(Of course, the first thing I did was hit Google to find the woman Millar was talking about; no luck, though...)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 29 June 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

From NPR.org I found her. "This Week's Show -- Irish American fiddler Eileen Ivers. "

FIND HER AND KILL HER

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 29 June 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

OH SHIT MUTE YOUR COMPUTER BEFORE GOING TO HER WEBSITE OH SHIT OH GOD

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 29 June 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

It was even worse than that Kid Rock/Sheryl Crow duet.

Except that was good. (Well, I like it better than anything they've done on their own.)

Anyway:

Eileen Ivers, Home of the Blue Violin -- the snippet they play just makes me think of Charlie Daniels.

Must resist Dave Matthews Band comments. But oh so tempting.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 June 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I just compared irish fiddle music to a man with a ripped open asshole, I'm on a roll today

Eileen Ivers & Immigrant Soul, Nine Time All-Ireland Fiddle Champion, London Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony at The Kennedy Center, Boston Pops, musical star of Riverdance, The Chieftains, Paula Cole, Patti Smith, Hall and Oates, founding member of Cherish the Ladies … this is a short list of accomplishments, headliners, tours and affiliations.

And don't you feel glad to know that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 June 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i often hate these ever-so-high-concept "fusions." like they're performing some kind of magical synthesis that will United the Whole World or something.

amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 29 June 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The worst was a poster I saw for something called "SwingStep," a show that brought together swing and step dancing.

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 29 June 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I HATE it when people use "sweetie" in that condscending way. Please, don't.

clumsy, Monday, 30 June 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)
