Why Oh Why Did The Drive-By On Westwood Have To Fail?

I hear Jay-Z has a new single out soon. Perhaps someone could tell Tim Westwood, he might be interested. He could even play it a few times.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 30 June 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously though, why is this man still on the radio? I was sitting in a van on my way back from my summer job as events staff on Saturday, and Radio 1 was on. In the space of around 30 minutes, Westwood played one track, and then spent the rest of the time talking in "hep" slang that I'm sure doesn't actually exist anywhere outside of his skull ("YO, WESTWOOD GON' GET HIS TOES SUCKED IN!!!"), and then shouting about some party he was going to, to be DJed by DJ Caleb or Kaleb.

DJ Kaleb/Caleb was there as well. He too was shouting loudly and incomprehensibly. It was like a fucking chimps tea party. Except even fucking primates are aware that music exists outside of Def Jam.

joni, Monday, 30 June 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course, Westwood likes to claim that he's done a lot for British hip-hop. When he had the chance to take one British rap act over to the states to help promote them, who do you think he went for? Blak Twang? Phi Life Cypher? Jehst? Riddla? Mystro? The Wee Papa Girl Rappers? No, he chose... So Solid Crew.

Cheers Tim.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 30 June 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Westwood's "Bigg Dogg" tour hits Northampton this week. How big do you think Tim Westwood's dog is? Is it Clifford the Big Red Dog levels?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 30 June 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i love it when he dedicates a record to all his 'soldiers on lockdown'

joni, Monday, 30 June 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh is he the RZA?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 30 June 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

he is

mark s (mark s), Monday, 30 June 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

He is the BZA Homes (League)

Tim (Tim), Monday, 30 June 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The best incomprehensible Westwood expression was "Oh, my days!" ("my daze!"?)... He used to say that all the time. I haven't listened for many years, but he probably still says it...

Tim Westwood is so old he's more 'hip op' than 'hip hop'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 30 June 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

so solid roxx u r all gay.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 30 June 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Wee Papa still exist? Holy shit. I found this old hip-house compilation in my parents' basement last weekend (we lived in England for a year when I was nine), and they were on it along with, like, Kid N Play and D-Mob. Is D-Mob still around too?

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Monday, 30 June 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Or the Cookie Crew? What about them?

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Monday, 30 June 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

they still exist in my house/heart, Tom. don't think they're still making records tho'.

yeah, 80s hip-house comps - simon harris!, bomb the bass!, gene & jim!!, BVSMP!!! etc etc. Classic.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 30 June 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim Westwood is so old, he owns all us lamers

stevem (blueski), Monday, 30 June 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'm totally into the comp I found. I have no idea what the name is, but it's on MCA and the tape itself just says, "See inlay card for details." I must've lost the case years ago. But it has Milli Vanilli on it! How gangsta is that? That tape and "Beat This: The Hits of Rhythm King" are both really tight. This is all way off topic, but I have no idea who Tim Westwood is.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Monday, 30 June 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

tim dogg is grimy

ssean, Monday, 30 June 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

He's a phenomena, I just can't get over him.

I've always identified with aspects of Westwood (I'm not from a hip-hop background, but I listen to it) and he never fails to entertain - a recent addition to the routine is 'shouting off' - when he screams away from the mike, somethin like 'LIFE IS GOOD!' or 'DROPPIN LIKE BOMBS!' when he wants to switch subject. And whatever I think of him, I'll listen to the program..... [ OH MY DAYZ!!! BABY BOI!!! ]

nick.K (nick.K), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Angriest dog in the world? nah...

nick.K (nick.K), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Westwood is gonna set his daschund on me for making those jokes, arg

stevem (blueski), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

WHAT!!!!!!!! the ‘W’ is a no-limit soul-jah, surface as depth, the unreal in awe of the real – ‘David Sings’, Hijack. THEY TRIED TO KILL HIM in a genre-cliche manner, His hip-hop compilations are better than any other radio DJs worldwide, why complain about the number of records he plays when he is the show – just as people lets Peel of the hook with playing rubbish and being boring (I prefer listening to the Dreem Team talking about their sunday roast and wagon wheels). But the Timster – of course he’ll pick SSC = they’re in the charts and keep getting imprisoned - the Wood has his circular worldview sussed – like Marxists (‘so, you don’t believe – well that proves you got false consciousness’) or Xtians (‘ so, you don’t believe, well no matter God is forgiving and will save you anyway, in fact Jesus died for your sins’). The reactions of U.S. rappers on his show to his schtick are telling – how far will they put up with the unreality they rail against on record = all the way to the bank = so much for keepin’ it real = Lord West of Wood sucks them into his world rather than the other way round. His big dog has it's jaws locked round Brithop = a bad thing

gE0rdIEr0b0t, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

he's a clown, but an entertaining one.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

more of the same bullshit from dom passatino, ts: hiphop djs are 'fucking primates' who 'shout loudly and incomprehensibly' vs 'Destroy: rappers with over-sized lips'

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim Westwood's white, trife. Thanks for playing, anyway.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

And, anyway, the Archbishop of Peterborough? Where did he learn about the "STREET DOGG ON LOCKDOWN WITH WESTWOO' RAYO ONE" in his father's diocese? Did him and Barry Fry go lowriding together or something? I despair.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah destroy all ppl who peer slightly outside their cultural milieu: WHAT ARE THEY THINKING!! CULTURAL APARTHEID NOW!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

why does this bother you so much? he is a rap dj, he plays rap music, people who like rap listen to his show, famous rappers go on his show, everyone's happy. westwood is probably the most famous and most powerful person in uk hip hop (i dare say he's done more for it than you have, too) so he deserves your respect for that if nothing else.

i mean i'm guessing there's some deeper issue here that you're not really going into - like, which of your deeply-held personal values does westwood challenge so much that you get this angry?

pete b. (pete b.), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

im guessing its a belief that rhymes with 'shmacism'

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

thats right dom is a SPACIST!!!!!!!!!!!

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't expect much from dom and his 'PUNK' 'humour'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

westwood is probably the most famous and most powerful person in uk hip hop .

I think this is what's working up Dom, in that he's failing to promote UK hip hop. I rarely listen to him, except while returning drunkenly from the theatre, he's on too late at night. He's certainly infinitely preferable to Colin Murray.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

dzefinately

jadrenos (jadrenos), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Nobody has ever listened to Tim Westwood for longer than four minutes anyway. And the Murray defense is, unfortunately, one that can be applied to every human being ever.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not a desire for cultural apartheid, anyway. It's just that Tim Westwood's immersement in street culture is only marginally more urban than an office worker dressing up as Ali G for Comic Relief.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim Westwood's immersement in street culture is only marginally more urban than an office worker dressing up as Ali G for Comic Relief.

um does this make any sense? when you say 'street' and 'urban' do you mean 'black'? why not say that then?

anyway, he does play uk hip hop, and he does put it on his compilation mixes too (quite a bit on the last one IIRC).

mostly he plays american stuff but go to a hip hop club in london or look at the record collection of a british hip hop fan and you'll see that this is a pretty fair reflection of what his listeners listen to.

pete b. (pete b.), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

My problems with Westwood are manyfold. I mean, you listen to, say, The Dreem Team or Emma B or whoever, and, yes, they're rubbish and irritating, but at least they don't have any great pretensions to being anything more than some person on the radio who plays a few records (plus DJ Spoony was on pro-celebrity golf with Ronnie Corbett, so he gets points).

Tim Westwood, on the other hand, is a man who doesn't little else other than play whatever Def Jam or related subsidaries have spewed out into the world that week, and then claim that he's "underground".

Plus, as I said, can you actually make out a damn word the guy's saying? I'm all for speaking your own slang, but speaking your own language? Fuck it...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I don't mean "black". Randomly subsituting "urban" for "black" is something certain other ILM posters (no names) do, but when I say "urban", I actually mean "inner-city".

To assume "black" and hip-hop in Britain are uniformly connected is wrong as well. Britain's biggest ethnic minority is Pakistani/Bangladeshi, and these are also (this is going on my own experience here, I don't have any figures) the ethnic group in Britain who are most likely to listen to/buy rap.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

He is the BZA Homes (League)
-- Tim (hopkinsti...), June 30th, 2003.

I only just noticed this. This is the best thing on the thread.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

actually i imagine that most people who listen to hip hop in Britain are white...

pete b. (pete b.), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, yeah, that goes without saying, the country's 89% white. I meant most likely as in percentage of the group. It's been two years since I did sociology...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

shouldn't Westwood be supporting Dizzee Rascal (who seems more 'hip-hop' than So Solid) considering he must the most exciting rapper in the country right now?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

westwood is hilarious, i listen to his show regularly and he has
done a lot for hip hop in the uk. a lot of the fun comes from
his ramblings, and when he does interview a rapper from the US you
can almost hear them think 'who the fuck is this guy and what
the hell is he going on about?!?!?"
i wish he would tell us what records he is playing more often though..

da jizzle, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

you can get the tracklisting from radio1 site i presume

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

who tried to shoot him and why?

robin (robin), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

It was alledgedly some kinda Yardie turf-war that led to our boy Tim getting shot. There's some info (containing the usual broadsheet mithering over rap) here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/gun/Story/0,2763,205967,00.html.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim Dogg has street pressha, plenty of respect from all hip hop listening communities in the uk, he came up through the pirates, puts on heavy (from what i've been told) raves, makes regular and excellent appearances at carnival, has a wicked sense of humour, loads of charisma and is just plain good ol' FUN. oh yeah and he took a bullet. and he did the halford adverts "cycle helmets sixxx niny ni'".

in my experience the only people who diss westwood for being a fool are indie pricks who laugh at those crazy rap dudes who wear jewellry and baggy jeans and who bought the last belle & sebastian record

ssean, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

My problems with Westwood are manyfold. I mean, you listen to, say, The Dreem Team (!!!!!!) or Emma B or whoever, and, yes, they're rubbish and irritating, but at least they don't have any great pretensions to being anything more than some person on the radio who plays a few records.

ssean, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't the slightest idea what you're on about.

However I have just ordered the new Specifik & Project Cee white label, it's called "Last Bongo In Sidmouth". That must count for something. It appears that I have begun to reprazent, however inadvertently.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

eight months pass...
I think Westwood is the funniest thing on radio, and he does not even mean to be!, so lets all just stop takeing the piss, and start laughing at the countless number of words he makes up.
P.s How much do you think he pays those U.S HipHop artists to big him up on his dub plates?

Naz Nasseri, Tuesday, 23 March 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

He's great.

He and Femme Fatale should make beautiful babies together.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

He kept me entertained during my schooldaze. The blasts and horns were always the best bits, and the interviews were always fun/funny. The one when he and KRS-1 got into it sparked off some small controversial PO1 shit. I loved it.

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

We interviewed him for the student rag in December... he was really nice. Really accommodating. His DJ set was awesome too.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

In light of the revelation that he may be in the next series of I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here, I recant all negative statements I've ever made about Westwood. I just hope he finds time to drop the bomb during a bushtucker trial.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

full marks for comedy value...no, im lauhging at you, not with you...has the guy even heard of DJ format?
