Why can't I get a copy of the Pop Group's 'Y' on CD?

or any format for that matter?

Has it never been re-released, or am I just being really stupid?

Robin Goad (rgoad), Monday, 30 June 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

You have to get it as a pricey Jap import at the moment.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 30 June 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

looks like they have it at aquariusrecords.org for 26$

JasonD (JasonD), Monday, 30 June 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't there going to be a new double CD compilation from the Pop Group coming later this year? I think I heard that somewhere.

Jeff K (jeff k), Monday, 30 June 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Forced Exposure also carries the Japanese import.

I got it from here a couple of years ago http://www.101cd.com/search/artistall.asp?artist=POP%20GROUP

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I found it and _We Are All Prostitutes_ via GEMM.com from some Australian seller a couple years back. Rather inexpensive, too, relatively speaking (about $22 US for each one, I think).

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i've got a cd-r copy (from a cd original). email me - no idea how to email you.

phil turnbull (philT), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

found it for $7 at a local used CD place and didn't realize until later how fortunate that was

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

My old man stuff comes in again: I was at their second ever gig, and spent all of Chelsea's set talking to Mark. The friend I was with had been at their first gig and he had reviewed it in his zine, and Mark disapproved of one line, suggesting he looked out of place, which he totally did. Despite the rest of the review being glowing, he wanted them to remove it from the mag!

Radarscope reissued Y on CD in 1996 in the UK. I guess that's now out of print?

There's also a Pop Group/Mark Stewart live boot CD called Mona Mona which is really dirty sounding (sound quality wise) but is great, nonetheless.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Otherwise.. yay for Kiss The Future.. it's not the same as the individual releases, but what a great primer overall.

I still need to track down the self titled Mark Stewart from 1987 on CD. It's a weird hodge podge of a record, but I need "Anger Is Holy" and the full "Fatal Attraction" (as well as the Sakamoto/Sylvian cover of "Forbidden Colours")

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure "Y" will be re-released eventually; this early Orange Juice and Scritti Politti material would have been considered far rarer a year back (never on CD before?), and has now been released.

Tom May (Tom May), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Last I heard Soul Jazz is doing a Pop Group comp and Mark Stewart comp.

frustrating, I totally tried to offer to reissue everything, the individual Pop Group albums and such, but had no luck contacted Stewart through someone else.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

oh wait, now I see the tracklisting...so a 1 CD collection of everything? What about the individual albums?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm guessing it's been in the works for a while, but it's just rights issues and all that... given who was in the band at the time.. organizing royalties, etc. I hope they just don't wait too long when the relative spotlight fades (not to remove the underscore of how timeless Y is, but there's probably madder cash to be made from a proper reissue NOW as opposed to a year or later from now.)

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

And yeah, I love the On-U guys, but aside from Sherwood, LeBlanc and Stewart are difficult to approach, apparently.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

aside from that, it's possible other former Pop Group guys are just letting the ball lag.. for what reasons, I'd have no clue.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, have you tried getting a hold of Skip McDonald or Doug Wimbish? I'm guessing they're quite approachable and could give you leads.. but I'm guessing you've tried that already.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd rather have the original records (which I have been looking for eons) than a career spanning comp with a bunch of redundant stuff on it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Also: I'd be very interested to finally get to hear some Rip, Rig & Panic... whose material seems practically impossible to get through usual channels.

Tom May (Tom May), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I sent an email to someone who was working with Mark Stewart when he was going to come to NY to perform w/ On-U sound a year or two ago(it fell through...)

I'd be open to any suggestions for other contacts. I was emailing with the guy at Heartbeat about the Glaxo Babies but he may have lost interest. There is a pigbag cd, but no Maximum Joy or Rip, Rig and Panic.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i have listened to this album about 900k times in the last few days

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The Pigbag thing just got reissued a little while ago, yeah. The Rip Rig Panic, etc, used to be relatively findable, but that was some time ago.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe contact someone at Soul Jazz first? Mind you, maybe Kiss The Future is just the primer before the full reissues on Soul Jazz?

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be nice. It does seem to be how Soul Jazz has handled this stuff in the past.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

That said, I wish there were full ESG reissues too. Granted, The South Bronx Story is an almost-complete-early-discography-thereof, but I still want to hear the stuff that didn't make that comp, too.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

(And Kiss The Future is just a bite in comparison to the full sampler plate that is The South Bronx Story, so that's an unfair comparison.)

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

well, this was said elsewhere, but Soul Jazz hasn't always done that...which may be why A Certain Ratio is now coming out on LTM?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought A Certain Ratio was coming out on Soul Jazz (at least the first two records.) Am I wrong?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Soul Jazz has done both... though, admittedly, many more collections than succinct reissues. I think their strength is in early hard-to-find-stuff compilations, and not necessarily single-band collections, although they've never done a shoddy job on either. I'm very happy with my Konk, ESG, and Arthur Russell collections, even if they're not "complete", per se.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Y is available in japan
learning to cope with cowardice (director's cut!) has just been reissued, guess where, in japan (go to on-u-sound site) or to hmv japan or amazon.co.jp

all the stewart mute album should be available at mid price at mutebank, go to www.mute.com

the sj comps is a bit so so, really, and no tracks from "mark stewart" (third album) which is oneof the greatest album ever (learning to... also!)

frankesko, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

As The Veneer Of Democracy Starts To Fade is hands down my favorite Mark Stewart album.. just because of the sheer jaw-dropping WTF-ness of the noise/beat/din. Apparently that album was partially what caused Meat Beat Manifesto to form! They formed in Swindon essentially to try to "outdo" THAT album! But they failed, so they moved on and then they released singles, and then completed Storm The Studio and the rest is history...

But hearing As The Veneer in the late 80s was as mindblowing as the first time i heard SPK's "Slogun", or heard Flipper... in a I-didn't-know-they-could-make-music-THAT-fucked-up! way.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

As The Veneer also flat out invented DHR records' entire music aesthetic and discography, and still blows all of it away.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone wants some pop group / rip rig & panic on cdr can email me and we can sort something out.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

donut, As the Veneer... is certainly fantastically mindblowing, and as I know I've said before elsewhere, it was very much inspired by The Missing Brazilians' Warzone, reportedly Sherwood's strangest production job ever -- you know the bonus untitled track on As the Veneer...? It's essentially a remixed version of "Igloo Inn" from Warzone. The rest of the album is a bit more like glitchy dancehall with built-in distortion and very lonesome-sounding Japanese keyboard work. It disorients in a really singular way but I quite love it.

That's not cocaine! It's Ian Riese-Moraine! (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice one with the Missing Brazilians reference! I would die if I saw a copy of that album. I would pass up New Age Steppers or Creation Rebel albums 10 times before a Missing Brazilians one. Or even an Akabu one. I just have the one track off Pay It All Back Vol. 1 which is great.

But I think that last track off the As The Veneer CD is titled, and it's called "Dreamers" there if I'm not mistaken... It's also on the "Hypnotised" 12" (but not on the 7", which I also have.) But I don't doubt you, That's-not-cocaine!-It's-Ian-Riese-Moraine!

(I'm glad I finally got to address you like that, btw.)

(oh and yes, I'm a pa-fucking-thetic Mark Stewart/On-U geek.)

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

(Though the concept of noting which On-u related album has the strangest Sherwood production is really difficult. where to start! At least we can eliminate anything after 1987)

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

did akabu make an album circa piab 1? i think they're album came out waaay later and seem to remember it was much more straight reggae. that track on piab 1 is fantastic.

i sold the missing brazillians lp :(

(but then i also sold as the veneer lp and just kept the 12" - o the things i have done!)

sadly, no. the only really early On-U stuff I have is African Head Charge, New Age Steppers, and Creation Rebel... (and only the former do I have on vinyl, but whatevah). I'm talking pre-1983 stuff here. I do have Voice Of Authority and all that.

About Akabu, ah well.. at least I have that one track.

I actually remember when PIAB 1 was "no more than 3.99 pounds". sigh.

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

and why did that other radar reissue (we are all prostitutes) only have some of how much longer do we all...on it. the disc only comes to 37 fucking minutes - they coulda put the whole of mass murder plus the other tracks and it would have stilll been less than 60mins.

there is a rumour circulating that the pop group may reform for some shows but i'll believe it when i see it. mark stewart is playing some shows soon with the maffia (sherwood mixing) in the uk. if it is 10% as awesome as the '..veneer of democracy' shows, i'll be very, very happy.

yr disks went in the mail yesterday! for real! It's really nice...lot's of like, fairlight drums, maybe emulator II, with a latin rascals or someone edit. I have to look for it, it's called Watch Yourself. Is that the one on the comp?

in any case, there are 3 versions of John Robie's Yashar on your CD, and a note explaining the difference.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 12 May 2005 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

this early Orange Juice ... material would have been considered far rarer a year back

I just went looking for details, and The Glasgow School comp looks fabulous. What a great year for overdue reissues!!

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Thursday, 12 May 2005 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks Dan!!!

the track on the comp is called (i think) akabu theme. "akabu akabu akabu-bu-bu-bu" chanted chorus.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 12 May 2005 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

How many threads exist about the Pop Group's "Y" CD? I feel like I've told my "Got it for £2 in Woking Library" story about 7 times!

due to Soul Jazz issuing a lovely comp of the mans work.

i expect a rather gorgeous noise will be made.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 12 May 2005 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm referring to track 11 on the CD. Track 10 is "Dreamers", the next one is the untitled remix of "Igloo Inn".

Is it? Because I swore that there was an extra track inserted in the ALBUM track listing somewhere in the CD, because "Pay It All Back" is not where it's supposed to be if you count from the top down. I have the vinyl too, so I'm basing what I believe each album track is off that.

Anyway, I believe you that "Dreamers" is that remix of "Igloo Inn".. but I think it really is also called "Dreamers" and isn't untitled, because I think the "Hypnotised" 12" -- which has that same track -- says "Dreamers" somewhere on it as well.

Minutae minutae I know. I'm sorry.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 12 May 2005 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm fairly sure Radar put out Mass Murder in its entirety on CD as well; I see it pop up from time to time on eBay. These are some of my favorite records of all time; I went berzerk a few years ago and snapped up as many of the Stewart solo projects as I could.

Also, not sure if you know about them, but these sites are pretty great resources -

weirdly i just found Veneer on cd .. so now i see what all that was re the extra untitled track !

also - re-reading rest of the thread .. Akabu did release an album .. not classic on-u stuff .. very laid back and easy on the ear .. nowhere near as good as the track on PIAB1 which is a real shame as thats a classic.

now i'm totally getting psyched re June 3rd ..

What does it take to license stuff for US release?

naus (Robert T), Thursday, 13 October 2005 04:29 (twenty years ago)

I suppose if Warner Music/WEA or whomever thought it would sell enough, they'd have it released in America on Warner or a division of Warner. As it is, they likely don't think it's worth it, and at the same time don't see worth in licensing it to another label? I really don't know but may find out soon.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 13 October 2005 05:15 (twenty years ago)

adam, hook a brotha up!

Mad Senti (jaxon), Thursday, 13 October 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

Hmmmmmmmm, never seen this or any Pop Group stuff on CD ever. The reason for that sort of non-appearance is usually business/ contractual shit. Wasn't "Y" considered a severe disappointment when it came out? Presswise, the Pop Group sort of plummeted from being the best group in the world to being virtually untouchable - tho that might have had more to do with their politics than their music.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 October 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

Y did get a domestic CD reissue in the mid-'90s but it wasn't around for long and frankly WEA/Radar could have done a much better job with it. I would have thought that Soul Jazz would be picking up on reissuing their stuff, given the recent Mark Stewart compilation.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 13 October 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

There's usually oone or two on e-bay. Like this : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/The-Pop-Group-Y-CD-1996_W0QQitemZ4779205373QQcategoryZ307QQssPageNameZWD2VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

They tend to go for around £20.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 13 October 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

As it is, they likely don't think it's worth it, and at the same time don't see worth in licensing it to another label? I really don't know but may find out soon.

Maybe no one has asked aboot it. Rhino/Warner Strategic Marketing seems willing to license/manufacture the WEA catalog to tiny labels all the time (see the Water/4 Men with Beards, Scorpio, Wounded Bird catalogues, for example).

Vic Funk, Thursday, 13 October 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

People have asked. In the late 90s almost everything came out, but mostly only in Japan with one release of Y in the UK. Nothing in the US.

this page:

http://weare.hacca.jp/pop_group/

has the details.

Any initial response to the Pop Group has nothing to do with this, as WEA saw fit to release the stuff on CD in the 90s during an earlier revival of interest in post-punk. Either that or it's just a coincedence that I was discovering all that stuff around then, maybe their release of those CDs helped kick-start the revival. It may have been UK and Japanese imports, but they sold plenty to hipsters and collectors in the us. I know the record store in Oberlin where I bought it had to order it like 3 times.

one of the weirdest reformations ever. i had wind of this a few months ago and put in an offer for a show but they were looking for crazy money (i have a feeling audience demand for this won't be huge).

i hope it's more of an authentic line up than the laughable slits one that is out there gigging.

stirmonster, Friday, 21 May 2010 14:42 (sixteen years ago)

Why is it laughable? Is it because it's not all the original members playing the old stuff only?

But, as long as they're doing it, how about a reissue of For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder?

groundless round (La Lechera), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 14:32 (eleven years ago)

I don't know for sure but here's something from a Quietus review:

Whilst their studio recordings were great, it didn't prepare me for how genuinely thrilling and downright danceable The Pop Group were live, when I first saw them playing The Garage in 2010 and again when they shared a New Year's Eve bill with Sonic Youth, Shellac and Factory Floor later that year.

and this:

I would go if they were playing anywhere within a 6-hour drive of me

some kind of terrible IDM with guitars (sleeve), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:11 (eleven years ago)

i bought a ticket already -- just wondered if anyone knew what they were going to sound like
lineup is great so far!!

groundless round (La Lechera), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 17:07 (eleven years ago)

There were a couple of recent live sets upped to Dime a bit before Xmas. Sounded about as good as the late 70s recordings.
I had feared them getting nastily jazz funky after some clip I heard when I first heard they reformed. But the recent sets I heard sounded edgy. Don't remember hearing unfamiliar songs though. So hope they remain as good with the new stuff.
Lp review in Wire seemed pretty positive.
I hadn't realised it was due out so soon.
