Power Metal Indulgence

The new Nevermore album is so, so good.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 7 July 2003 12:25 (twenty years ago) link

The same guys who did the glowering minor-key downtempo powermetal version of "The Sounds of Silence," yes, those guys. And the lyrics are still ultracheese. But for me their new one is like Rush if Rush were cool: roxx harder, more heart than brane (though Nevermore still have some "brainy" conceits but that's sorta part of their charm), no ass 13/8 intervals to give the drummer some because the drummer's already gettin' some 24/7. Best goddamn metal guitarz record of the year to me though if you're an extreme/black/death enthusiast and never liked the pre-hair Iron Maiden style, well...this ain't that, but I don't see how you could like this if you haven't at least got a soft spot for that.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 7 July 2003 12:28 (twenty years ago) link

I find a lot of their stuff has a lot of nu-metal touches - especially tracks like Dead Heart In A Dead World. Not bad but I prefer Rhapsody for true power excess.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 7 July 2003 13:26 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, there's a nu-metal flavor running through the new one, but I think that might be part of the appeal - it sort of sands off the "oh-shit-these-guys-play-D&D" sheen that ruins Rhapsody and others for me. Although there's that one pure power metal band from Florida...umm...Kamelot. Got a weak spot for Kamelot, though that's about as guilty a pleasure as there is.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 7 July 2003 13:46 (twenty years ago) link

I liked Dreaming Neon Black a lot when it came out, the guitars are massive. Nevermore are probably one of the few surviving bands from my metal days that I could listen to in good conscience.

My all-time favorite power metal indulgence is Angra 'Holy Land'. It's Iron Maiden on batucada.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 July 2003 13:59 (twenty years ago) link

i'm gonna check out Kamelot. Can't believe HMV in Oxford St had a whole display dedicated to Nightwish though! These power metal bands are very hit and miss. Can we have a search & destroy please?

Search:

Battlelore
Nevermore
Nightwish
Rhapsody

Destroy:

Hammerfall
Stratovarius

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 7 July 2003 14:22 (twenty years ago) link

I'd put Stratovarius under Search, personally, along with Sonata Arctica. Agree on Nevermore and Kamelot and definitely Nightwish. I also really like Entwine and To/Die/For. And there's even a new Naglfar, if you don't mind growling. Non-"Nu" Metal is having a really good run these days, I think.

ara, Monday, 7 July 2003 14:38 (twenty years ago) link

Stratovarious, Rhapsody, ewww. The only way I can stand this sort of thing is if it self-consciously goes waaay over into camp, like Bal-Sagoth.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 July 2003 15:02 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah Stratovarius just doesn't do it for me. Iron Savior is incredibly campy, too, though I remember showing it to one of the kids I work with, a guy who'd grown up seriously underprivileged & neglected & who lived "in his head" a lot of the time, and the whole sci-fi-ness of it really punched all his buttons. It was awesome.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 7 July 2003 15:17 (twenty years ago) link

You mean Rhapsody DON'T go over the top? Anyway, Bal Sagoth never own up to any kind of campness, but I see what you mean.

?!?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 5 January 2008 10:05 (sixteen years ago) link

As for older stuff, there's early Bruce-era Maiden (Piece of Mind, for instance). Helloween's Keeper of the Seven Keys (Parts 1 & 2) really helped shape the sound. Manowar's terribly inconsistent, but I'd say Hail to England is their strongest album. Crimson Glory's Transcendence is another from the 80s.

A. Begrand, Saturday, 5 January 2008 10:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Sweet, thx.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 5 January 2008 10:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Pick a D&D-playing kid in southern Europe and chances are his favorite band is Blind Guardian. They do the speed metal minstrel thing better than anyone I can think of, the multitracked choruses stick in your head. Check out "Somewhere Far Beyond", "Imaginations from the Other Side" and "Nightfall in Middle Earth".

Fuck all y'all; I like Hammerfall. Their 2CD best-of, Steel Meets Steel, is great.

unperson, Saturday, 5 January 2008 12:56 (sixteen years ago) link

hoos the Maiden best-of will rock your socks off

J0hn D., Saturday, 5 January 2008 13:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, unperson's right, that Hammerfall best-of is great fun.

A. Begrand, Saturday, 5 January 2008 19:07 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, Nightfall in Middle Earth made me laugh on the first listen. By the second, I was convinced that it's the best non-Maiden power metal album of all time.

Power metal bands sure do have ugly singers.
Let's not forget the mighty WARLORD :

Does Accept count as power metal? Cause I was listening to them a lot the first half of this week, for some reason - mostly Metal Heart and Kaizoku-Ban.

unperson, Saturday, 5 January 2008 23:31 (sixteen years ago) link

why do you think i put a link to a live version of metal heart up there? they are one of power metal's many gay grandads.

scott seward, Saturday, 5 January 2008 23:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Sonata Arctica are pretty rad, but apparently I'm the only one anywhere who likes their new album. Totally awesome keyboard-driven melodic Finnish stuff. Check out the live album, For the Sake of Revenge, or their previous album, Reckoning Night.

Jeff Treppel, Saturday, 5 January 2008 23:34 (sixteen years ago) link

i still dig this a bunch:

http://www.themetallist.com/webzine/img/covers/680.jpg

from last year? year before? anyway, very strong power/prog. it's really just a savatage album. most of the songs were gonna go on future savatage records.

Avantasia, part 1 (the concept album done by Edguy's singer) is pretty much my favorite power metal album ever. Which Edguy albums are this good?

New issue of Metal Edge (Sept. 08; All That Remains cover) has a six page rundown of the 25 Essential Power Metal Albums. Just sayin'.

Avantasia, part 1 (the concept album done by Edguy's singer) is pretty much my favorite power metal album ever. Which Edguy albums are this good?

-- BigLurks,

Tr00 Edguy fans point to everything up to but not including Hellfire Club. At that point they start to alienate some of their fans with songs about personal experiences, unveiled by epic metaphors.

Personally I love Hellfire Club and even Rocket Ride, the album after. Party metal vibes, and a distinct, if slightly German, sense of humour are beginning to appear, and they're slowly losing aspects of their Jungian, shamanic inner journey thing.

I think Tobias Sammet writes excellent lyrics incidentally - I especially like 'Down to the Devil' from Hellfire Club. But yeah, my view (unlikely to be shared by many) is that you can't go wrong with Edguy - I actually would go one step further and say Tobias Sammet is a strikingly brilliant songwriter, one of the best in power metal.

moley, Friday, 22 August 2008 01:10 (fifteen years ago) link

I loved Rocket Ride. And the recent Avantasia album is good as well. Yeah, I'd say Sammet is the best power metal singer going today.

Only really familiar with Helloween's Keeper duology, but the japanese band Marge Litch sounds like power metal to me, quite good...
