"that Manics thing" = Little Baby Nothing, not the Traci Lords album version, the live one.

Wyndham Earl, Saturday, 12 July 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

alternatively - picking up from the Blondie thread - what songs should be on a Kylie Best Of that either aren't on a current one or wouldn't be on a future one?

no love for indie kylie?

Wyndham Earl, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

kylie pox sounds dangerous

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

no love for indie kylie?

How much indie do you want? I picked the 3 singles from "Kylie Minogue" (the 1994 one), a Saint Etienne cover from one of those singles and an ALBUM track from "Impossible Princess"!

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

which one is the st etienne cover? and is it better than the original?

Wyndham Earl, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 05:23 (twenty-two years ago)

'nothing can stop us' and hell no

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

not even some jackass in some misguided pose could besmirch the original

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed - certainly not better than the original, but very good all the same. Oddly, given that it's three or so years more recent, it actually sounds a lot more dated than the Et's original, which despite being a total 60s throwback sounds timeless and doesn't seem to have dated a day.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem lists all the ones I love by Kylie.... but add Your Disco Needs You - classic.

russ t, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Your Disco Needs You is the greatest achievement of mankind in the past 15 years. This is a fact and no one can convince me otherwise.

I happen to like the stuff she did with the Manics but the collab. with Nick Cave is one of my least favorite songs by either. Also, I prefer Traci Lords on "Little Baby Nothing" to the versions with Kylie.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

What's weird is that Your Disco Needs You is so amazingly genius, but the album it comes off is utterly shiteful, the title track excepted.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm...it's not really utterly shiteful as it is kind of anonymous. I like it well enough as background music, mainly. But spot on: the title track and Yr Disco are incredible, especially Light Years for the "Hello...my name...is KYLIE" robot speech.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I will be your.... person..

It is shiteful. "Please Stay" is worse than every S-A-W era album track put together. Let's not even discuss "Spinning Around" except to say more thought went into the gold lame pants in the video than the song, and said skimpy pants had far more substance too.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i hated all the singles off 'Light Years', but i've never been a big Kylie fan. except that i sometimes think 'Put Yourself In My Place' is the best pop song of the 90s...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ummmmm... Her butt, and... I'm all tapped out.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Beavis.

Edward, I don't think those songs are really bad as much as they are dull...and the title track and Yr Disco kind of make up for the dullness. That being said most of it is pretty lame.

You know what is the best though, the Junior Vasquez remix of "Too Far". That is like a military march held by Kylie on coke.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought it was absolute madness not to release Your Disco in Britain - it was a surefire number one.

On a night like this was a better video than song, but Spinning Around reminds me of hot days in coffee houses in London that summer, so it holds a special place.

Anyway.... enough of Kylie. Dannii's WAY sexier.

I have much love for Spinning Around

Yeah, it's that mix that clinches that song's place in the 10. That and the sort of growled speak/singing at the beginning. And the tinkly piano, especially on the live version.

Dannii may be way sexier - especially now she seems to be able to open her mouth properly again - but how interesting is a POX on her going to be? More than half of her very best songs come from Neon Nights (still album of the year for me).

Oh yeah, and SHOCK! ILM says Kylie's best = Put Yourself In My Place, which failed to go top 10 in the UK or Australia.

Proof that ILM is not JUST pop, it stands superior to pop.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 17 July 2003 05:56 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha, it got to #11 in the UK - tough break
