Has anyone listened to Maudlin Of The Well?

My latest discovery: Maudlin of the Well. An american band who recorded 3 albums (My Fruit Psychobells...A Seed Combustible; Bath; Leaving Your Body Map) on Dark Symphonies. The last two albums, released simultaneously, are both masterpieces. It sounds like a crossover between Peter Gabriel's Genesis, death metal and Nick Drake. And it's probably the best thing I've heard on the last 12 months.

Has anyone had contact with this band's work? They have now evolved into a new band called Kayo Dot, signed on Tzadik. I just hope that they maintain the level of musical quality...

I've heard about them many times, but the praise was never loud enough to actually make me buy anything...most of the reviews I saw described them as a fusion between Oxiplegatz and Windham Hell, both of which aren't too great. The fact that they're on the generally rather uninteresting Dark Symphonies label probably has something to do with it too...but I got to give them a chance I see!

To me their flittery quiet moments are limp, and their growly moments are rather dire. But there are several of their songs up at http://www.kayodot.net/www/motw.html, so you can easily make up your own mind.

yeah, they're pretty good. ambitious and daring enough that i can forgive the stuff that doesn't quite work. i tend to prefer their mellower side as well as the strength of some of the ideas in theory rather than practice. they're definitely keen to make an impression with the heavy sections, but these often come off as sounding like a bit of a novelty and rather tacked on. still 'bath' is definitely an interesting record and i'd recommend people give it a listen. not often you get to hear a flourish of sax in the same breath as something death-metal flavoured.

actually, listening to bath now there are some songs that work extremely well. 'heaven and weak' and 'birth pains of astral projections' are both outstanding and manage to create something unique out of a fusion of familiar sounds and genres.

how does the MOTW stuff compare to the (godly) Kayo Dot?

a steak of romanticism (country matters), Friday, 10 April 2009 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

most ppl think MOTW are far superior to Kayo Dot (esp the last 2 KD)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 10 April 2009 14:58 (seventeen years ago)

I doubt that, strongly. 2nd KD was brilliant.

Was not a big fan of the last KD at all... MotW >>>>>>>>> KD.

well, i think the premise is pretty similar. kayo dot is developing and fleshing out some of the ideas you hear on MOTW, but kayo dot has that really nice violin that i like. i'd say the marriage of quiet and peaceful sounds with the heavy, dissonant bits is common to both bands though. i don't really lean towards one band over the other, but it's interesting to hear that the fan consensus is that MOTW is far superior as Herman mentioned above.

the rateyourmusic consensus morelike

"___on limpid form" is one of the best musical compositions of the decade fwiw but as this is a MOTW thread I'll quit it with the bleating.

last KD had some great moments

i loved all three maudlin albums when they came out, but i can't say that i've listened to them much over the years. and, yet, i still hold on to them. i thought they were a groovy hybrid at the time. they made my pazz & jop top tens back then. but so did missy elliot and i don't listen to her much anymore either. they were way better than joan of arc, that's all i know. (although maria really likes the new joan of arc album, so maybe i'm wrong. maria is crazy though.)

There will be no repress afterwards, and only a VERY limited amount of barebones black LP gatefolds afterwards, with none of the extras (no 7", no box, no mp3 downloads, nothing).

The box set includes "Bath" and "Leaving Your Body Map" on 200gram colored vinyl. Also: "The Secret Song" on 7", a signed poster with new artwork by Toby Driver, deluxe hand-numbered box, motW guitar picks, mp3 download cards, and much more.
