The D4 -- 6Twenty

On a friend’s recommendation, I checked out The D4’s album “6Twenty”, as I saw a used cd on Amazon the next day for $2.50.

It is quite a good listen if you like rock and roll. The songs are all fast, fun, catchy and the guitars have a nice roar to them. Sounds good.

My favorite tunes are “Heartbreaker” and “Rebekah”, but it is quite a solid album.

The album also has good covers of Johnny Thunder’s “Pirate Love” and a cool song called “Mysterex” by a band called The Scavengers of which I have never heard about before.

Don’t know much about The D4 other than they are from New Zealand and are on Flying Nun.

The same friend recommended the new album by a group called Supagroup, who are from New Orleans. His band they opened for a them few weeks back. Anyone heard Supagroup before?

i haven't heard supagroup. i am just posting on this thread to say that the d4 epitomise everything that is wrong with flying nun in the year 2003. actually they epitomise everything that is wrong with new zealand.

I saw the D4 in L.A. a few months back (they headlined, the opening group were Electric Six!). Their guitarist is a real rock star, he's actually like the Who all rolled up into one person.

However, this band had no catchy songs at all. Nothing about their music stuck in my head at all, not one riff, not one melody. They were just pure generic garage rock, nothing more.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 14 July 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck the D4 and the horse they rode in on.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the datsuns are way better

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 July 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, but even they suck.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 14 July 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

And on the final episode of 'Give It A Whirl' last night the bloody D4 were compared to the Stooges! A bit bloody rich, in my humble opinion.

Bill E (bill_e), Monday, 14 July 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. All this seems a bit harsh, don't it? I like 'em for what they are, music to mindlessly rock out to. "Get Loose" is future Nuggets material, as is that song with the space gun effect at the beginning. And they are way better than the Datsuns. WAY better.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Monday, 14 July 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

how so? they don't rock as much, they're slicker, and their vocals are pretty much devoid of individual personality. plus their appearance on Flying Nun is a travesty.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 July 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw them live and they were horrible. dull dull dull rock.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 July 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

is it possible to mindlessly rock out to something? i mean, surely if you didn't think about the music you were listening to at all you would be ambivalent/undecided about it? i'm not being argumentative, i am genuinely interested in the use of that phrase.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 14 July 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe it's the rock equivalent of going to a rave or something - not actually paying any attention, just "feeling the beats" (nb i don't know what i'm talking about)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 July 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

jim, almost all of flying nun these days is a travesty. think fiona mcdonald and betchadupa.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 14 July 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

*aiiieeeeee*

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 July 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

jim, when did flying nun last release a record you thought was good? they've sucked for way longer than they were ever any good, c'mon!

duane, Monday, 14 July 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ouch. I think I like the record more now.

earlnash, Monday, 14 July 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

hey i know this guy who eats rice sandwiches, i should introduce you to him earlnash.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 14 July 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

last good flying nun record = Love's Ugly Children's first LP

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 July 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

oh rude! they were terrible

duane, Monday, 14 July 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i lurve LUC but their second album is too tuneless by half

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 July 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

haha Fiona McDonald hasn't existed for ages di! use other targets please!

saw the d4 in dunedin before they got big or whatever, great show etc etc (& I've had to put up with fuckloads of dull garage rawk here in Ak so I think I've got a basis for comparison). own a single, don't play it too often. haha "North Shore Bitch" is k-grebt gritty nz social realism or something. don't they cover "joe 90" on that under the influence album?

& I like their videos. & their bassplayer. seemed to be really nice guys.

Ess Kay (esskay), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ess-kay, fiona mcdonald DOES exist, i had to transcribe an interview with her earlier this year and it was PAIN. "use other targets please!" use other catch-phrases PLEASE!

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

But she hasn't been making music at all, has she? Surely FN wouldn't give her any money after how badly her solo album tanked?

Ess Kay (esskay), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Pan Am are so, so much worse the betchadupa or the d4.

Ess Kay (esskay), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm sure shes still making music. do musicians stop making music just cos their albums bomb (other question: is fiona mcdonald even a musician?) i wouldn't know, i can't say i follow FN these days.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

it's either shite or reissues. a bit like Cherry Red these days

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

hasn't she taken up a TV career? she was co-presenting some sort of arts show, & she's been a talking head on a few other random etc.

esoj - I thought you might have been into ghost club or the subliminals!

Ess Kay (esskay), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

actually i do like both. i'd forgotten all about the Subliminals! must crack out that EP of theirs again

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Pan Am are so, so much worse the betchadupa or the d4. , yeah whatev, "distinction not cost-effective" as i believe robt christgau would say. yeah i agree the D4 are 1 one of the least worst as far as that stuff goes but [ditto], you know? btw "north shore bitch" was writ by a band from NEW YORK CITY (the Devil Dogs), how bout that.

duane, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

also i dunno if it's anything to brag on but hey did you know that i was in the, i ain't gonna say their name but the main band that both the D4 & the Datsuns ripped that whole shit off of, ask em!

duane, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

you were in AC/DC??!!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't you recognize Duane from the videos?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

no not them dumb ass! you know ! URIAH HEEP!!

duane, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

you're Lee Kerslake?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd love to know who started the rumor that people went to raves and "didn't think, just felt the beats" so I can punch them upside the fucking head.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 06:26 (twenty-two years ago)

All the clubbers I knew in high school, the dicks

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

They put me off, it sucks!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"(nb i don't know what i'm talking about) "

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I just don't see what brings out all the hatin' on 'em. Sure, it ain't prime choice golden era Flying Nun, but it's simple, disposable fun, like a night out in town drinking with the pals. They sound like retards rocking out and having a good time, which I sure ain't opposed to. It's contagious. It's big, dumb rock, and mildly catchy at that, which makes it enjoyable for me. I really don't buy this idea of the band being self-conscious poseurs. They don't take themselves seriously enough for that. It's not something I play often, as it's not very memorable or great, it's just plainly average, not horribly mediocre as some would make it seem. Kinda like Zwan, it was bashed for not being the bee's knees, but they're really not bad, just not great. I won't vouch for their live chops; I haven't seen them live. And the Datsuns are awful, IMHO. A really lousy cock rock band. This coming from one who likes deh cack...oh, wai

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

And "Get Loose" does rock massively, despite what all you have to say!! What you say? YOU want to have a word or two 'bout it? Howz 'bout you TALK TO THE HAND! YEAAA! That's right!

Ahem...
