Why haven't we talked about this yet?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know. Review it for me (4 Stylus).

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Good question, but I can't talk about it... I'm biased.

nick.K (nick.K), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, fuck me, why has it taken this long for society to give a rapper an excuse to shout "Dangermouse!" repeatedly over a song, hmmm?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

coincidentally i just queued this up in Winamp - will comment when listened

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
ok so i finally finally heard this album today (i'd been putting it off because it's on lex) and to my surprise its stupidly fantastic

i mean, the last thing i expected was for it to sound like pharcyde, but there you go! how come more people aren't talking about this album?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 3 November 2003 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

because it's on lex. because it's old tricks and so there's not very much to say about it. same reason we don't talk about swing or ska bands, i guess.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 3 November 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"the only one" is old tricks?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 3 November 2003 05:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(granted the lex thing is totally valid but i said that already)

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 3 November 2003 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

well, yeah, it is. you've never heard producers sample funk-rock licks? (didn't pete rock sample grand funk like 10 years ago?)

i agree, it's one of the bomb tracks, i also liked both intros, the title track, "take care of business", the love jam at the end, the Tes album, even some of the Boom Bip album. i just keep hearing souls of mischief when i listen to this, though.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 3 November 2003 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

also it was funny hearing the mos def sample in "take care of business" and going "oh yeah! Mos Def! i remember him!"

vahid (vahid), Monday, 3 November 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

vahid it's more the sped-up vocal sample in "the only one" that does it for me! yeah it's been done (and done) before but i don't think of it as old tricks when it could slot in with mainstream hip-hop so easily.

granted there's definitely a mid-90s tilt to the rest of the album, but i don't think that's necessarily a bad thing either. jemini's been around for a while and so i don't get the feeling that he's being purposely old school or whatever - just doing his thing.

i agree with scott p that it's a really top-heavy record and j's a little samey as a lyricist, but there are so many great moments in the first ten tracks that it's all real easy to forgive

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 3 November 2003 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

also: "medieval" (the track with the pharcyde guesting on it) reminds me of bubba's "comin round"!

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 3 November 2003 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

(via looney tunes instead of the grand ole opry)

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 3 November 2003 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

six years pass...

why do i love "the only one" so much? so corny, so great. i mean, it's not like i listen to much jurassic 5 these days...
