Crunk = The New Oi?

I had a thought listening to Bonecrusher's "Never Scared" on the radio (actually had several, but this is the one I'm going with). Is crunk (which I'm clumsily defining as super-rowdy southern rap with an emphasis on shouting and generally bad-assness) the new Oi music? Some similarities:

1) Emphasis on gang-chanted choruses (Lil' John and Eastside Boyz)

2) Lyrics generally about either kicking someone's ass, getting wasted, or both (preferably)

3) Simplistic lyrically, but extremely catchy choruses

4) Usually very samey, with emphasis on midtempo pace

5) Tends to spark violence in clubs (or at least that's what Triple 6 Mafia was known for)

Weren't critics comparing Onyx to Oi! punk when they first appeared?

Michael B, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

the biohazard connections surely helped

anyway, i think this comparison is prety solid

rap's shift to MASSIVE outfront choruses repeated 18x over the course of the song is all to the good in my eyes considering how bad most of the lyrics are these days

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I never thought of Onyx....but I suppose they were really the first to do the crazy yelling grimy kind of thing, so they might be an influence on some of these southern guys, them and maybe Busta Rhymes....

1,2,3,4,5) It's dumb music for poor people, who all enjoy shouting, violence and beer, naturally.

d k (d k), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, fuck poor people.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Simplistic lyrically but with catchy choruses = all pop music

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

simple != good/bad

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

jess why the fuck are rap lyrics 'bad these days'?? mainstream hiphopp is at its lyrical tightest like ever!!!

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

also i disagree with a lot of the judgements about dirty south shit, listen to three six or pastor troy or even recent cash money stuff and tell me those are 'simplistic' rhymes, and im not even including luda and trina and them

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

and bonecrushers album is all corny goodie mob style socially conscious rhymes!!!

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

but it sparks violence in clubs!

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still waiting for rap to turn into the new emo

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

give it forty years

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

666 mafia = ambrose bierce

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a strong claim.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

emo rap = dizzee. :-(

anyway the current three-six mob single is so fantastic productionwise. like some truly next-level gothified horrific soul torture paranoic post-just-blaze and uh so what if its about rims? and d k's lil flip thread was great!

these guys have fantastic verses -- the shouty choruses aren't displacing lyrics, just r&b vocal hoox.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Your claim makes a lot of sense, especially considering the fact that there used to be an oi band called Bonecrusher in the mid-late 90s.

Clay, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

haha trina has complex rhymes

sean g, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Cash Money has complex rhymes? Fuck, somebody call Canibus!

I'm not dissing crunk, or Oi for that matter....just pointing out the similarities.

Rap already is emo, and its name is Atmosphere!

I read alot of stuff about how Triple 6 was getting banned from clubs all through the south a few years ago --- and this was in rap magazines, not 20/20 or Dateline

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

>>Rap already is emo, and its name is Atmosphere!

Basically.

Matt K, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

sterling's right about "Ridin Spinners", the production is REALLY nice. it wasn't until i sat down and watched the video that i realized how good that track is.

also 3 6 are usually not simplistic lyrically, but I think pastor troy gets a lot of credit for being 'deeper' than he actually is

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 17 July 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

he's deep like creed are.

(also the whole three six album is killing me. ghetto chick is fantastic also putcha d. in her mouth which is *this* close to soundtracking friday the 13th)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 18 July 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
i think the us south and east london and jamaica have created the zestiest most exciting music all year and there's such an explicit thread that connects all three sounds

dk's post on this thread has to be one of the silliest, most one-sided posts in ILM history

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

someone on a blog i was reading today (i think it was jess)compared crunk to gabba and oi and i have to agree, there are similarities to gabba in the gleeful yet menacing abandon
i haven't heard oi! but the comparison stands based on what i imagine it to sound like

robin (robin), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Sonny his post was a joke on how the orig. q was phrased.
