I can't wait for the fifteen live albums!

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

*rubs hands at prospect* ;)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, we got an invite to this. HSA recycled it. Quite right, too.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

'recycled'? hippies!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, then, we Improvised A New Use For It.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Saw them on Sunday in The Hague. Dazzling.

ArfArf, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

so does zorn play in this or not?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Line-up I saw was

John Zorn (sax); Marc Ribot (guitar); Jamie Saft (keyboards); Trevor Dunn (bass); Ben Perowsky (drums); Cyro Baptista (percussion)

Unfortunately didn't see entire set as I'd made a previous arrangement to see Matthew Herbert Big Band who were on simultaneously. In retrospect this was a mistake as I was enjoying Masada a lot and I did not hear enough of Herbert to really get the flavour of his music. First time I've seen Zorn or Masada, not quite what I expected (more like avant-rock and less like free-jazz than anticipated) but a completely exhilarating 45 mins or so.

ArfArf, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

great! can't wait, really (hopefully will get those £10 tickets, neevr been to the barbican before)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

went to this yesterday.

FUCKING RAWK!

zorn came in wearing combat trousers. looking in his mid-30s (turned 50 this year).

Electric masada?! well, only mark ribot and the bass player were 'plugged in' so electrified it is.

If dave douglas was the link in masada, then as far as this sextet is concerned, ribot does this job but I looked at it as two triplets. Ribot, bass player and drummer as the section supplying rock with funny time signatures (da prog!) and then zorn, percussionist cyro baptista and the keyboard player supplying the 'jazz'.

All those lovely tunes that masada had were unrecognisable with these new arrangements. The variety of things they played was delightful. From 'cartoon' music to melancholic momnets driven by the organ.

The absurdities from baptista's kit, Ribot WAS IN DEMONIC FORM supplying solos riffage and yet grace too, when required and then there was zorn, conducting, directing play (the fourth piece was where he'd point at someone, they'd play something then he'd switch to someone else and so on, baptista missed his cue once/twice but it was virtually flawless and the piece was such a car crash that it didn't matter). He wasn't playing the sax, he was making noises, squealing, taking the tube out of it and make duck noises. In this context that was appopriate. And then he'd just watch at times, like the rest of us, smiling like a lunatic when ribot would do a solo. he loved it, so did i.

anyone else go?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 21 July 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

bah sorry i'm in a rush right now.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 21 July 2003 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

zorn came in wearing combat trousers

I think this is equivalent to saying, "Zorn came in." (Every time I've ever seen him he's been wearing combat trousers - or camoflauge pants, as we yanks would say.)

o. nate (onate), Monday, 21 July 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

That sounds great, Julio, I love all of those guys. Was Ben Perowsky playing drums? Because he's the fucking man.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 21 July 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

At least I don't have to feel bad about not getting a chance to see this group though, it's not like there's a chance that Zorn won't make a record out of it.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 21 July 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

There are a couple of electric Masada recordings available on Tzadik, though perhaps not with this exact line-up.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 21 July 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Are there? I couldn't find any after a quick look through the site. That new Masada 'anniversary' tribute-ish thing looks interesting though (and Marc Ribot has a new solo album coming out, yay!).

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 21 July 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

''Was Ben Perowsky playing drums?''

yeah i think so (lost the programme dammit).

this is the first time I've seen zorn so I didn't really know he usually wears combat trousers (or camouflage pants, as the yanks would say ;)).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 21 July 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

For electric Masada, try "Bar Khokba" or the second disc of "The Circle Maker". I have Vol. 2 of the Anniversary Edition, and I really like it. It's all different bands' arrangements of Masada tunes - Zorn doesn't play on the album, and it doesn't have any of the usual Masada line-ups on it - but there are lots of very nice performances and interesting arrangements that take the tunes in different directions. I particularly enjoy the second disc.

Zorn definitely has some weird thing about the camo pants. Not only does he always wear them on-stage, but the few times that I've seen him on the street, he's been wearing them as well. It's like he doesn't want to be bothered to think about what to wear.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 21 July 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't there a CD put out recently where masada tunes were arranged for a guitar quartet?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 21 July 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that's Vol.1 of the Anniversary Edition. There's another volume also coming out, "The Unknown Masada", which is songs that haven't been recorded before, I believe.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 21 July 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

woops, I didn't read your post closely enough. I don't think that "Masada Guitars" is a guitar quartet. I think it's three different solo guitarists, but I might be wrong. I don't know if there's a guitar quartet version.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 21 July 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

OK. Masada is definetely the most interesting thing that he's ever done bar his improvising (that i've heard anyway).

The combat trousers thing is quite something esp when you see the guy smiling and nodding along to a great solo by someone in his group (as he did several times that night). its pretty funny.

x-post: if i find it I'll report back here.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 21 July 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I got 'The Unknown Masada', it's pretty good, if inessential. The 'expanded Masada' track w/Ben Perowsky and Greg Tardy is awesome, and the Erik Friedlander and Wadada Leo Smith/Ikue Mori tracks are great. Other than that there are some v. pretty straight folk-ish readings and a bunch of pseudo-metal versions that blur together. It makes me want to buy more real Masada cds.
