Montel Jordan "This Is How We Do It": Classic or Dud?

Screw "In da Club." This is THE party-banger of all hiphop. Everything about it just screams "good times". Granted, the Slick Rick sample isn't that slick, and it's a bit overused (which is understandable, seeing as it is THE party-banger of all time). I say Classic. Total classic.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

total classic

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

After a lifetime of conscientious objection on the evidence of En Vogue, SWV, Mariah, Eternal, Boyz II Men (shudder) and all sorts of other deplorable shit, this song - along with "No Diggedy" - got me into the whole hip-hop/r'n'b/soul crossover thing in one fell swoop (okey, two fell swoops, but y'know).

Absofuckin' classic.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I know I must have heard this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

he was a student at Pepperdine University when he recorded this song.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

he's nearly 7 feet tall

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

would the modern strip club even exist without this song?

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i always get it confused with the "rollin' with the homies" song from clueless.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Cross "Return Of The Mac" with, uh, "My Prerogative" or something and you're not a million miles off, Ned. (am aware this could well be your idea of hell)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

classic, classic, classic.
i'll bump this at parties and even the indie rock art fags will shake it.

praying mantis (praying mantis), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I know I must have heard this.

You could substitute this line for the chorus and use the same notes!

SWV, En Vogue, Michel'le, Monifah, etc. = classic

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I was wondering if I was the only one who made that connection.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

ha that song's like, what, six years old? "new for 2003, monica's 'are you that somebody?'"

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Somethin' 4 da Honeyz? Po' Broke and Lonely?

Old Monica! Whoo!

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

something for the people was also the first time anyone openly ripped off timbaland!

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

A truly great bassline.

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

rollin with the homies! it also always reminds me of the "it's time to do the nasty" sketch Tim Meadows did on SNL where they used the same backing track/vocal melody.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

montell rules.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

classic, though in high school I wrote a review declaring that the album was mediocre overall. Can't say I really remember much beyond this song and "Something For The Honeys"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

he's a sc1ient0logist! AVOID!

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

He and Beck will make beautiful music together.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

God, I even like that song. (Just double checked to make sure it was the one.)

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a toss up between Jordan and Candyman's "Knockin' Boots". The latter I had on cassette when I was, like 10.

I played "This is how we do it" on college radio once and just got BURNED! Ah well...

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

You violated the number one college radio rule -- if you can hear it everywhere else, why are you playing it there? (The mistake of many people on this board = assuming that ILM is supposed to be college radio. ;-))

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Were you at the U of M when that happened, Kate? Didn't they explain to you that you were only allowed to play garage rock by Twin Cities bands?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate this song...i was heartbroken when i learned that nobody parties like they do on the Westside/South Central

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

that's a statement of fact not an evaluative comment.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

but its the main reason i think its dud

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

It's among the top 10 songs of all-time that I catch myself singing at the top of my lungs whilst stumbling around drunk when there's no other music playing...probably #5, right between "Papa Don't Take No Mess" (#6) and "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" (#4).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate this song...i was heartbroken when i learned that nobody parties like they do on the Westside/South Central

pepperdine university is south central... malibu.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 17 July 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Still call it a classic. Hmmm, haven't heard it in a while. I might have to hit up college radio after all.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Thursday, 17 July 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

seven months pass...
i will say CLASSIC!!!

Tara McG, Friday, 12 March 2004 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm kinda buzzed, and it's all c-cuz...

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

It feels so good, in my hood... tonight!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

nobody mentioned this, but there's some warm-hearted story about how Montell Jordan(or whomever produced it) asked Slick Rick for his permission to use that sample and it was granted because it was such a dope track and nobody else had gotten permission to use it before that. I think it was in the Def Jam box set.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

so classic that mis-teeq's attempt to cover it was one of their very rare mis-takes (sorry). an "ignition"-like landmark.

Hello-

My name is Rolanda A. Porior. A few years back, I went to my first Montel Jordan concert!! It was great!! He is a great singer!! I have is picture. I would like to get his signature sometime if possible? Is there any way I can do that?

Sincerely,

His biggest fan

Rolanda A. Porior, Friday, 14 May 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

sign it yourself, from him, and tell everyone else it really is his signature. eventually you will believe it too.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 14 May 2004 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Montell -- last seen as a falsetto-voiced serial killer in 'The Fighting Temptations'.

ENRIQ (Enrique), Friday, 14 May 2004 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

This is THE party-banger of all hiphop.

It's not really hip hop, though, is it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 15 May 2004 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

How is this even a question?

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

There aren't enough "classic"s in the world.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, that's a ridiculous statement. Lack of rapping does not mean it isn't hip-hop.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 15 May 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not claiming to be an expert on the subject, but seriously....it's not hiphop. It may make nods to hiphop culture and uses the lingo, but it's basically just a danceable r'n'b tune. I'm not knocking it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 15 May 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Our radio station's all-staff promo OPENS with a voice saying "The Sound Of The Lion" followed by this song. Blatant false advertising (I really don't think the hip-hop shows have been busting out the Montell lately) but I love playing that promo every chance I get.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 May 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't the song New Jack Swing, really? Or is that a subset of hip-hop (not that I care, really)?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 May 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

That's it! New Jack Swing...just like, say, "My Perogative".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 15 May 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, yes, the great Montel Jordan.http://www.pr.com/upload/article_image_1137990345.jpg

Too bad his TV talk show is going off the air soon.

:-p

Rev. Hoodoo, Saturday, 2 February 2008 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

guess I'll say classic, I remember when it came out (think I was in middle school) and it still draws a good response...while out in Miami in 06 at a club, everyone went nuts when it came on, moreso than the other 90s-tunes that got played.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 February 2008 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

i love how he says friday

THIS IS HOW WE DOOOO EEHT ON FROYDAAAAAY NOIIIIIGHT

The Brainwasher, Sunday, 3 February 2008 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

yea, his dipthongs were pretty typical of the time period, that's what I always liked about the song though.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 February 2008 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

i always wanted to get montel to do like an anniversary remix single called "this was how we did it" which would have been an unquestionable smash hit.

so on a scale of your choosing, how pumped would you be for an anniversary remix featuring special guests called "this was how we did it"

fairly pumped

apologies to billstevejim for not seeing this thread sooner cos i TOTALLY ADORE 'get it on tonite' and would have said so! except maybe the mix with ll on if i'm being picky.

i was even thinking of polling the save the last dance soundtrack a while ago as an excuse to rep it but it seemed like too much bullshit on there just for a 5-way battle that donell jones wouldn't have won.

Amazing facts about Montell Jordan taken from his wikipedia page:

The song also states his unusually tall height of 6'8"

Jordan graduated summa cum laude [from Pepperdine] and was a state finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship.

During his live performances he generally gives more of a rock-oriented performance, with Jordan even going as far as to wear sunglasses while on stage.]
