Alas. Rockist Scientist to thread, of course, but any other contributions would be welcome.

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that's sad. What a day.

Sam J. (samjeff), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

This is sad for me, though she lived a very full life. I just recommended a couple of her songs on that "Recommend Latin music thread."

There's really no female vocalist in more or less the same tradition who shows any promise of working on the same scale (but I guess, realistically, the tradition itself, salsa and the forms that immediately preceded it, don't show much promise of continuing on the same scale as they have in the past).

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

She just did a Dr.Pepper ad with Paula Rubino (or whomever she is).

I suspect there will be a tribute on WRTI's El Viaje this week, which will be on in about 15 minutes. (That's at 9PM EST.) You can try listening here: WRTI. This show is on every Saturday night at this time, and it's quite a good (salsa-oriented) Latin music show.

Descarga.com just put up a discographic essay on Celia Cruz that should help the unfamiliar to sort out the various phases of her career.

Farewell to Celia Cruz's loyal husband:

Sources: Pedro Knight, Celia Cruz's Husband, Dies
Knight passed away in an LA Hospital

(CBS4) LOS ANGELES The widower of the Queen of Salsa Celia Cruz,
Pedro Knight, has passed away, according to sources.

Knight died in a Los Angeles hospital early Saturday morning.

The cause of death has not been released.

Knight, whose health had been deteriorating for some time, was 85
years old.

Last March, Knight was hospitalized in L.A. for a series of strokes
and also suffered from diabetes.

Knight was a well-known Cuban-American musician but was probably
more famous for being the husband of legendary singer Celia Cruz.
She died of a brain tumor in 2003.

Oh no. I was afraid that was what this revival would be about. RIP, Pedro.

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Saturday, 3 February 2007 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

We read about Cruz in Spanish class and listened to "La Vida Es Un Carnaval." It's the only song I've liked in that class.

You should hear Cesar Pedroso's version.

That awesome Celia Cruz exhibit that was at the Smithsonian Museum of American History had some nice photos of a young Pedro Knight, and several documentary films, one of which discussed his role as a talented musician and bandleader, and how he gave that up later to help manage her career. When they left Cuba and applied for US citizenship I think, his application said musician while hers said something like 'housewife' though!

whats a good place to start with ms cruz? is there an album that showcases her slower songs as well as faster ones? (i read most people prefer her more uptempo material)
