dreamy 70s-ish modern stuff

Recommend some dreamy 70s-ish stuff that didn't actually come from the 70s. I'm thinking Zero 7's stunning rendition of Johnny Osbourne's Truth And Rights (off their Another Late Night compilation) as a starting point. Any recommendations?

[Why modern stuff?
a) new ideas about sound/production (glitch-dreamy-psych?)
b) more genre mash-up (eg dub influences)
c) distillation (the dreamy stuff without need for the contrasting crazy bits: that's what stops me loving early Genesis, they do beautiful mellow sequences then follow them by jarringly strange/OTT/energetic craziness).]

madlib! more specifically his various non rap guises: the beat conductor, yesterday's new quintet etc. maybe the stuff he does with dudley perkins? (eg. flowerz) or are you really only after non-vocal stuff?

if vocals are allowed see also: sebastien tellier

madlib works on all pts. a/b/c if you want to see this stuff thru a hiphop lens

The Kingsbury Manx -- "Let You Down". Sounds a bit like what might come out if Pink Floyd made "Meddle" today, except without an ounce of pretension (also no 23-minute cuts or singing dogs).

i have been searching for music like this, too. fluffy space rock made with modern technology. somewhere between 10cc and force tracks, digital and analog. prog rock without the pretension (ala the previous post). i think the 70s are fast becoming my favorite musical decade. maybe superpitcher fits this bill?

Pretension?

(also no 23-minute cuts or singing dogs).

The only track I like on that album is Echoes :)

I think as a musical decade the 70s has a lot going for it. What I would like to happen more now is for modern bands to dig back into it, pull out all the core bits, brush off all the rubbish (cf Genesis as I mentioned), and polish until they gleam. The Zero 7/Johnny Osbounce thing is right on the marker - the more we see of this the better IMO :)

by Osbounce I mean Osbourne of course. Typos on Dvorak are much more interesting than typos on Qwerty :)

These are all good, but never quite what I want. Perhaps this is going to be like my search for the 'perfect' German minimal techno record: everyone else gets it ever so slightly wrong so I've given up finding it and am attempting to write it myself :)

To refine what I'm looking for a bit more: little or no vocals, and mellow the way mellow soul is, rather than mellow the way Kruder & Dorfmeister are.

so damian how does ynq not fit yr description? like for instance the ynq cover of 'i am singing' by stevie wonder sounds just like what you seem to be talking about

OK, attempt 2: Poets Of Rhythm, Discern/Define

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 17 July 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, having got a hold of some Yesterday's New Quintet it's certainly the shiznit. And also, the Poets of Rhythm stuff is superb.

On further listening, the quiter Super Furry Animals and also the Kingsbury Manx stuff are very nice. Thanks for the recommendations everyone, I'm off to spend more money than I ought. :)

I would never have described Poets of Rhythm as 'dreamy'

you'd like Juantrip's Balmy Under the Stormy. very modern production of vintage sounds. has a Syd Barrett-takes control of-Air vibe without directly referencing either.
