TS: Limp Bizkit's "Nookie" vs. Gang Of Four's "Damaged Goods"

"I came into this world as a reject" vs. "I can`t work/I can`t achieve/Send me back"

"Its so easy for your friends to give you their advice/They tell you to let it go/But its easier said then done"You said you`re cheap but you`re too much"

"If you can go away/Im just gonna stay here and always be the same" vs. "I'm kissing you goodbye (goodbye, goodbye, goodbye)"

"I did it all for the nookie" vs. "Sometimes I`m thinking that I love you/But I know it`s only lust"

"Dwellin on the past/Its burnin' up my brain/Everyone that burns has to learn from the pain" vs. "Heated couplings in the sun (Or is that untrue?)/Colder couplings in the night (Never saw your body)"

"You can take that cookie and stick it up your YEAH!" vs. "Open the till/Give me the change/You said would do me good"

The big difference seems to be that Go4 wants points for realizing the futility of it all while the Chocolate Starfish wants points for his good, romantic intentions. Which is better?

To mention the former in the same sentence with the majesty of the latter is to unforgivably blemish the latter's good name. May you drown in your own filth for this crime, Antoine. I'd have expected better from you.

the band that best connects these two is probably Fugazi, who share Bizkit's righteous indignation but side with Go4's total cynicism (i.e. "Promises" on Margin Walker).

It's like the difference between an extremely stanky beer belch in your face and a hectoring pamphlet with great art design.

and a hundred knees jerk in unison.

In the same way that a hundred flowers bloom.

natch! but seriously folks, do you sympathize more with somebody declaring they've been fucked over (cuz the fucker had a hidden agenda and the fucked still surrendered like a chump hey) or with somebody saying that romance is futile?

Both songs use simple bass lines to good effect as well.

I really tried to put my horrible bias against Fred Durst's terribly annoying voice/persona/existence aside, but really, the Go4 lyrics really are 100X better writen.

David Allen, Thursday, 17 July 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Miccio's got a point, though - taken in isolation (ie if you can possibly forget that it's Fred Durst singing it, the Fred Durst who said and did and released all of those horrible other things), "Nookie" is a decent pop song with a fairly rousing chorus. But the Go4 song sounds like a quick rough fuck, whereas "Nookie" sounds like a twelve year old crying and breaking stuff. Which is not to say they both don't have their place.

"I did it all for the nookie" is a lyric with so much potential. But the rest of the song ruins it.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 17 July 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

But David Allen, you are IN the Gang of Four, that doesn't count!

Also Go4 never balanced out the cynicism with anything like "The One" or did anything as vulnerable-sounding as "My Way", so Bizkit win

dave q, Thursday, 17 July 2003 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"I came into this work as a reject" is cheap self-pity and nothing else; "I can't work, I can't achieve, send me back" is sly self-mockery AND po-faced social commentary. Go4 win.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 17 July 2003 07:30 (twenty-two years ago)

'cheap' & 'self-pity' = ROCK, 'sly' & 'po-faced' & 'social commentary' = INDIE CORNYNESS! (or corny indieness!)

Actually the entire forum has been taking Can-Can lessons behind your back.

next thread:
Limp Bisquick "Break Stuff" vs GWAR's "Slaughterama"
(I'd set up such a thread myself, but that would require looking for -- and looking AT -- Limp Bisquick Lyrics.)

I did it all for the nookie -- yeah -- the nookie -- yeah -- so you can take that cookie and stick it up your -- yeah!

Are you really comparing the above gibberish to "Damaged Goods"? Shame on you.

It's like the difference between an extremely stanky beer belch in your face and a hectoring pamphlet with great art design.

Spectacularly worded and sooooo spot-on!

fortunately the Roger De Courcey version doesn't disappoint (*expects very few people to understand this lame joke, and even less to find it funny*)

< OFFTOPIC>
I can already hear Filk bands at sci-fi conventions feverishly composing versions of "I Did it for the Wookie"
