(I'm refusing to add Barenaked Ladies' "Fight the Power" to the list, for reasons that shouldn't need to be explained.)

JesseFox (JesseFox), Thursday, 17 July 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

King Kobra (King Kobra), Thursday, 17 July 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't there a whole tribute album to Straight Outta Compton with different people doing all the tracks?

JesseFox (JesseFox), Thursday, 17 July 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, and it was horrid for the most part.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 17 July 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Snoop covered Slick Rick's La Di Da Di.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 17 July 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

There was also a bluegrass version of Gin and Juice. Can't remember who did it. Lemme look...oh yeah, the Gourds. Phish have also apparently performed it. Guess you could do a whole Gin and Juice mix. Not one you'd necessarily want to listen to, though.

JesseFox (JesseFox), Thursday, 17 July 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

(correction -- the Phish that recorded Gin and Juice is a different Phish from the Phish-head Phish)

JesseFox (JesseFox), Thursday, 17 July 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought hank williams iii did a version of gin and juice...although it might've been mislabeled.

Jay K (Jay K), Friday, 18 July 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

orlando or plastic fantastic or someone also apparently did a cover of 'gin and juice'. i remember it being referred to at great length in the mm review of liquid swords, the logic seeming to be that hip hop could be good because some romo twat might like it (ironically). it was at about this time that i stopped reading the music press.

Supersuckers - Dead Homiez

I believe that Duran Duran did a version of White Lines. I also believe that it was met with widespread derision.

Ben Dot, Friday, 18 July 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The versions of "Gin and Juice" mentioned thus far should all be The Gourds, def. the Ween and Phish ones.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 18 July 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

snoop's "paid in full"

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 18 July 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Ween never covered Gin And Juice. That's a mislabeled mp3. The real band is The Gourds.

billstevejim, Saturday, 19 July 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh wait, someone said that already. Sorry.

billstevejim, Saturday, 19 July 2003 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

re: "my dickie" - should dancehall tunes using hip-hop riddims count?

i wasn't sure how many others there were...other than the fcken gourds. but, hey, that tune is about a lyrical bite of work it, rather than a rhythmic one.

The Barenaked Ladies - Shake Your Rump

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Saturday, 19 July 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno if it counts, but las ketchup's "asereje" crops up the "rappers delight" start...
and anyway, there's plenty covers of the rapper's delight. i can't remember the names right now, but i've got a few of them at home, one in a brazil-jazz mood, and the other a disco-reggae track.

joan vich (joan vich), Saturday, 19 July 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Gonzales covers himself many times over on his quite splendid Z album - all over slsk if you wants it (and you should).

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 19 July 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Joan, you probably talk about Xanadu and Sweet Lady's version of "Rappers delight" available on a compilation of reggae-ish covers called "Hustle disco" and it's great.
Redman and Keith Murray also covered that song.
