She's great as a TV personality, but can she sing? The one song I heard was godawful. Maybe she's improved?

"but can she sing?"See Ainikuno and Cocoronousegi for examples of her less hyper and also great singing style.

I enjoyed "No Kure Kure Takora" for months before I realized it was a cover of the theme song from "Gimme Gimme Octopus". DUH.

Have you heard "An Audio"?
I haven't, so am curious, but I've been kinda let down by the early 00s period of Tomoe when she tried to be serious and calm (i.e. didn't really have an identity per se) and I just assumed this single was one of those songs from the period.

yeh it's less hyper but a super-perfect pop song

if you haven't already, check out Dream & Machine from 1999. It's like a better shorter sequel to Megaphone Speaks. The ya-to-i (i.e. former Boredom Seiichi Yamamoto's pop side group) produced "Funny Feeling" is a really wonderful pop song that's interesting and weird enough to stand out from the more pedestrian stuff, but not hyper. And Tomoe's singing is really sweet on it. The rest of the album has a good hit/miss ratio.. especially the Buffalo Daughter produced track, which sounds like Tomoe channelling Yoko Ono.

I really hate most jpop, but if you're going for kawaii, only Tomoe gives you the rabies-kawaii
YAAAAAAAAY
TEXAS
is there a video for 'shopping a to z' hiding online in kanji somewhere? and can someone help me trainspot the classical sample in 'Kurukuru Mirakuru', is that Aaron Copland or some soundtrack?

You know, SuperModel, Megaphone Speaks, and Dream & Machine only get better as time goes by.
I'm trying not to go hyper on the retrograde artist comparisons but much of Supermodel is like Burial on 78RPM, except more than 10 years prior, and of course, Tomoe's voice is far less sultry than the perfume commercial female voices on Burial's stuff. Oh yeah, Supermodel is also really loud and fun... details details.
But the latter two albums have really grown on me, especially Megaphone Speaks. I'm pondering checking out the more serious singles from 2000 and 2001... although knowing that the excellent Aso Fevor single would follow in '05, it's gonna be tough.

I agree, although I haven't heard SuperModel or any of the singles for that matter.
The first song on Megaphone Speaks (Pure Atom Boy) is so gloriously fifties sci-fi it's amazing, the beautiful faraway wurlitzer organ solo in the middle give me goosebumps.
