In honor of the "the best pop band alive" (for once I can't argue in the least with a magazine tagline) gracing the cover of CMJ, I thought I'd throw this out there.

Here's my order (only counting the tracks off the two LPs--which excludes their terrific cover of Toronto's You're Daddy Don't Know:

-Letter from an Occupant (of course!)
-The Laws Have Changed
-Mass Romantic
-Centre for Holy Wars (hope grows greener than grass stains)
-The Fake Headlines
-Testament to Youth in Verse
-Execution Day
-It's Only Divine Right
-Breakin' the Law
-July Jones
-The Slow Descent into Alcoholism
-From Blown Speakers
-All for Swinging You Around
-Mystery Hours
-The Electric Version
-Ballad of a Comeback Kid
-The End of Medicine
-Miss Teen Wordpower
-The Body Says No
-The New Face of Zero and One
-The Mary Martin Show
-Loose Translation
-Chump Change
-Jackie
-To Wild Homes

good
zumpano(when carl had a big, broadway voice and sang out his butt)
bad
new pornographers(where the songs are clever, i keep trying to like it since my love for zumpano is immense but the voices are small and mostly evil)

the dan bejar love is a puzzle - nasal twittery.

You, sir, appear to be deaf.

Zumpano was fine, more so on Rookie than on Changes, but there's something really festive and joyous about the NPs that Zumpano was missing. Dan Bejar's songs are the only chink in the armor, and I usually skip right past them.

*sigh* Here we go again!

See, I'm easy. I'm a fan of both Zumpano and Destroyer, and unsurprisingly, dig both the Newman and Bejar songs.
I do wish there were a couple more Bejar songs on Electric Version, but it's still a damn fine album.

Breakin' the Law
God I hope this is a cover.......

So after finally listening to the New Pornographers album I'm struck by how well it goes together with Game Theory's Lolita Nation. Or am I just huffing paint fumes here.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 20 July 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I've only heard the new album, but enjoy just about all of it. Really like "From Blown Speakers" and "July Jones," though I should give it more listens, since it's all good.

Since I'm lazy, given all the people affiliated with the group, can someone list some good songs by those involved to check out?

A facile and non-exclusive list of songs on Electric Version (never heard Mass Romantic) that are or may be better than The Laws Have Changed, in descending order...

From Blown Speakers
It's Only Divine Right
All For Swinging You Around
The End of Medicine
The Electric Version
