Whats your opinions on this album? been described as "electro-punk", Its on 'Output' and has supposedly drawn comparisons with Joy Division, Can , New Order ,Suicide and Serge Gainsbourg.
Sounds great but does it really?

That would be great, wouldn't it? As it stands, this is the first Output output in a while that I don't rate all that much.

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 19 July 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

agreed.

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 19 July 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i downloaded it mainly because the reviews i read compared it to new order (although it did say movement-era new order specifically) and joy division. i have only listened to it once and did like it, but wouldn't say it was especially like either of them. there's a couple of dub sounding tracks, and a couple of glitchtronic type numbers. it's probably closer to the last air album (and not because the guy is French.)

I have it and it's rubbish. Just reviewed it for Stylus and gave it 5.6. Look out for the review going up next week.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 19 July 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Seen it have many rave reviews. If it really did sound like those bands it would be fantastic. Might be worth searching out to see.

The guy's a video artist and you can tell, it's total style over substance stuff. There's a DVD which comes with it and has some interesting visuals (and also some shite ones). It's really not worth bothering with.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 19 July 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Review here.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 19 July 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

what i've heard sounds OK - it will be Air's album of the year probably.

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 19 July 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

it's total style over substance stuff

this seems to be reguarly argued on ILM as NOT being a bad thing, but only with pop, hip hop or r n'b i guess. I'd be interested to read Nick's review as i can't see why it warrants that harsh criticism thus far.

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 19 July 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoop! Whoop! If the whole album's as *compulsive* as opening track "Crazy Love", it's gonna fly into my top 5 of 2003...where's all the hate coming from? (Ok, I've only heard the one track, but bear with me...I mean, Air? wtf?)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 19 July 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i have it, but have only listened to the first four tracks. i enjoyed tracks 2-4 a lot, the first one was merely ok. i look forward to giving the rest a few spins.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 19 July 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Slightly more helpful query: If I love track 1, which I do, will I love the rest? Where to go next? I'm inclined just to download a track at a time, in album order - bad call?

And what *is* this music? Try as I might, I have no real frame of reference here. Nothing like anything else I've heard on Output/Leaf at any rate. Sounds more...early '80s. The Pop Group? Magazine? Naah.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 19 July 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

For all its obvious points of reference ("Crazy Love," the most blatant of the lot, seems to mimic both "Heart and Soul" and "She's Lost Control" -- or just the more mechanical/teutonic side of Joy Division), I'm surprised by how well it works on me. "Confusion" (heh) is my favorite, like an introverted Juan Maclean track.

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 19 July 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not normally baffled by artists having nothing to say (just check my love for Four Tet and Manitoba!), but Colder have nothing to say and not even an impressive way to say it. I just found it really dull. I thought "Crazy Love" was the best thing on the album. I'll be taking it back Monday and getting Dizzee Rascal instead.

two years pass...
Anybody heard the new album "Heat" yet?

fizzcaraldo (Justin M), Monday, 31 October 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

Picked it up last week. The first has a more consistent Joy Division infatuation, this one varies the influences a bit while still mining the same strip of influential early 80's bands. So far my favorite is "Downtown" which is a dead-on delicious Suicide nod.

nine months pass...
one of the benefits of redecorating and having to pretty much turn your home upside-down is that you find all sorts of stuff you'd completely forgotten about.

such as this.

i got it as a christmas or birthday present from a dear friend a couple of years ago, listened to it once, decided it was shit and shoved it away. tonight, while fashioning furniture (qv the ikea thread on ILE), i thought i'd give it another spin.

it's absolutely bloody brilliant. holy shit. i don't hear much joy division, but there's a heap of ACR and dodgy factory funk in there. really quite compelling. i love being proved wrong :)

i guess "heat" is worth checking out too?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 19 August 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

naw, it's a dissapointment. lots of referencing, trying to get some kind of factory, tinny compressed drug vibe out. doesn't work, imo

rizzx (Rizz), Saturday, 19 August 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

i'm assuming you rated "again", rizz?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 19 August 2006 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

grimly I did the same thing as you, bought again and gave it a couple of cursory listens and dismissed it, then went back to it and something about it clicked. that 'where' track near the end of the album is like how all those weak gang of four updates should've sounded, awesome tribal drumming shot through with feedback.

didn't rate heat that much but you can get it for half-price from the output shop so it might be worth picking up for that!

genital hyphys (haitch), Sunday, 20 August 2006 03:30 (nineteen years ago)

how all those weak gang of four updates should've sounded

yes! i've been listening to those in the gym a bit recently. perhaps that's why i latched on to "again" so readily.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 20 August 2006 10:15 (nineteen years ago)

Again is a lot more consistent and less derivative
