Connection: New Dawn Fades by Joy Division/ Hated Because Of Great Qualities by Blonde Redhead

I have been listening to Melody Of Certain Damaged Lemons by BR this evening and I just noticed how HBOGQ sounds like an update of New Dawn Fades. The vocal phrasing on the track is very Ian Curtis, I can project his voice onto Kazu Makino's and it fits so well. The angularity sounds like what would have happened if JD had decided to further explore the tension in I Remember Nothing and project it onto other songs. If JD had access to the thirty years of musical history that followed their demise they would have sounded like this. This is rigor; the notes hang naked in the air forever with the nu-stephen morris holding down the beat in the background. The only thing missing is Hooky busy basslines, just tone columns holding down the root. The only real contrast you get is towards the end of the song when the two guitars start playing off each other, it is very remin of when Barney broke up the chords during the NDF verses. The emotion is so think of that album, there are some weird and dysfunctional band dynamics going on and it makes the music so much more dramatic. It can sound so up on the surface, but there is a brooding darkness that is explicit in some places and quite latent in others. I never noticed the connection, but it is there throughout the album. You have to project things into it, change drum sounds a bit in your head, think of IC's voice instead of BR's, and ignore the twee intro track and the last two junk tracks on the b-side...

br rule because the lyrics to the twee'est song on the record go like this:

once she loved a boy. but he did not love her.
his name was Jun. disillusioned she tried to forget.
so she left everything & traveled to the other side of the world.
but life was like a dream.
a series of meaningless movement.

and then by chance she met you and your brother.
the moment she saw you.
she knew you were made for her.
you're never out of her thoughts.
she sees only you.

if it was yesterday he'd felt free just like her
he could have been with her
but today can't be anymore
tomorrow maybe yes.
but today he is not here.

i heard someone say
that mind keeps wondering from desire to contempt
from contempt to desire
never ever feeling bored. cause we think we are free.
i think it's so pathetic, don't you?
were you listening to me. no not even one word.

i heard someone say that mind keeps wondering
life is like a dream, a series of meaningless movement.
i heard someone say
let's go to the other world
because we think we are free.
a series of meaningless movement.

That is so fucked and it is totally the best thing ever. They are three piece with two twin brothers and a Japanese chick, and their music kicks ass and they have ménage et trois AT THE SAME TIME! The best record of all time would be a split 7" with BR at their lowest and Junior Senior at the highest. It would be like BIPOLAR disorder on WAX!

i heard someone say
that mind keeps wondering from desire to contempt
from contempt to desire
never ever feeling bored. cause we think we are free.
i think it's so pathetic, don't you?
were you listening to me. no not even one word.

that is so hot I had to C&P it twice.

So is anybody else seeing this or have I had way too much coffee and way too little sleep?

And they even look like this!

If JD had access to the thirty years of musical history that followed their demise they would have sounded like this.

Did I hibernate through a decade? Thirty years?

I used to love Blonde Redhead. Whatever happened to them? They don't seem to have put anything out for the last three years...
