Well... I'd say search>> find >> attend his live shows if those should take place anywhere in your 'hood (esp. if you haven't heard him play live before).
The only time I heard him in concert was 'bout ten years ago, but I'd sure go again if a chance occurred.
As for Gayle's recordings, I'm not of any use for recommendations - I don't think I've heard any of his cd's.

I find his music quite unpleasant when I saw him. I didn't even stay for the second set.

he played percussion on a blue humans record even though he's better known as a saxophonist. that was fine anyway and that's all i have.

For what it's worth, I've noticed that a lot of serious musojazzbos who are big fans of free jazz nevertheless have serious misgivings about Gayle's playing. I realize that will be a plus for some of you, but that's fine. Listen to Charles Gayle, it's your life.

''I realize that will be a plus for some of you, but that's fine. Listen to Charles Gayle, it's your life.''

eh, why would it be a 'plus'? what was so 'unpleasant' abt that performance you saw?

yes I have heard that some ppl don't like him. same with arthur doyle and john zorn's playing (whom i am hopefully seeing tonight). I'm ok with both zorn and doyle.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 20 July 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Because some people distrust musos and jazzbos.

What I didn't like about it was that his playing was all over the place and I had no idea what he was doing, but it didn't sound good. I guess if you just like pure energetic chaos, then that's fine, but that's all it sounded like to me.

he's unpredictable

i got the feeling he's much more comfortable and so blows better with some "side" guys than others

am not sure about him + Wm Parker

Like Doyle, generally thirty-seven times better when he's not in charge of the session.

Unlike Doyle, even when he's in charge, there are good spots.

Search: More Live @ the Knitting Factory
Then search: everything else, especially with William Parker's involvement.

_Consecration_, _Touchin' On Trane_, _Live At Disobey_ & _Kingdom Come_ are the only ones I have, & are all marvelous. I was at the Disobey club date & it was a remarkable evening.

Arthur Doyle is my personal naked emperor crusade.

He plays in the background of Hank Rollins 2-CD spoken word bummer-athon "Everything" (in between snatches of traffic noise)
