The Hardwax crew (basic channel/chain reaction/burial mix/mainstreet/rhythm and sound) in Berlin has started a new sub-label called Basic Replay. They are doing repressings of classic Jamaican dub. The record is Playing It Cool by Keith Hudson. It hit the stores this week and it is worth looking into.

mixed feelings, love the vocalists but the rhythms don't really click with me. can't elaborate until i give it another listen

This? http://basicchannel.com/item/BR-1

It's quite good! A couple of the versions are extraneous, I guess, but all the 12"s are excellent (particularly love the Ackie, Andrew Bees, Chuck Turner, Courtney Melody and Prince Jazzbo). It's all somewhat tangentially connected though (switching from 80s digital dancehall to 70s dub to Keith Hudson to 90s roots) so most of the stuff works better on the original releases. But if you don't have those it's well worth getting.

i picked up a very 80s vibe from briefly listening to it.

is there a difference between basic replay and wackies germany?

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 03:15 (seventeen years ago)

All the Wackies stuff was the stuff on the Wackies label. Basic Replay is stuff from all sorts of labels.

Most of it is 80s (or early 90s.) The rest is 70s (Ijahman, Isaacs, Hudson).

lol i guess i'm more critical than you, alex. i mean u seriously saying "call me rambo" is excellent? and that awful herbie hancock-ish scratch thats all over the gregory isaacs track! there are much, much better courtney melody songs out there too. that said, the ijahman levi, keith hudson and jackie mitoo tracks are nice.

OK so wackies germany is like represses of classic stuff from an established label whereas the basic replay stuff is random stuff from different labels, kinda like the classics that could not stay out of print any longer vs german dudes scraping the bin?

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 03:31 (seventeen years ago)

the various labels thing might explain why i find it so patchy

Haha I love "Call Me Rambo". That's my favorite track on the whole comp! Next you'll be badmouthing White Mice! ;)

The Herbie Hancock-ish scratching is uh slightly distracting, but the song and riddim are good if you can SOMEHOW manage to ignore it.

Sure there are better Courtney Melody songs (he's great!), but "Black Liberation" is still good (strangely the A-side "Stop Inform" is much better and not included.)

That's one way to look at it, I guess, but a lot of the Basic Replay is stuff is pretty classic (admittedly it's the stuff that am0n digs haha not the stuff I like.) But the wild variation between the periods their catalog covers does make comps like this one seem kind of random.

Courtney Melody really deserves a Reggae Anthology, although I guess like maybe twelve people would buy it.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 03:44 (seventeen years ago)

i would buy it if it had "ruff like we" on it
