I remember seeing it mentioned at ILM that one of the Vines' siblings had a pretty good dream-pop/shoegaze band, but now I can't find the thread. (OK, now I miss ILM search)

Any Australians know the name?

Hi, My band sucks but I scored a lucrative recording contract because my big brother's band is successful.

Found the thread, 'tis the Red Sun Band.

But they don't seem to have any recordings.

ah yes i remember now.

they've been described as "cat power mixed with white stripes intensity". i haven't heard them though. if they are in fact dream pop they won't sell any significant amount of records in their homeland.

did i mention that australian audiences, by and large, won't piss on anything that doesn't rock if it was on fire?

That is nicely put, Jim. That's why we never had a shoegazing scene.

The Red Sun Band are fucking amazing. End of message.

And no, they don't have any recordings yet - when I left Sydney at the end of May they were being "courted" by bloody everyone but they're apparently holding back from signing cos a. they're scared of being eaten alive by the industry, and b. they *know* every fucker on the planet will compare them to the W**** S****** even though THEY SOUND ABSOLUTELY NOTHING LIKE THEM WHATSOEVER AT ALL AT ALL and they don't want to be misrepresented.

(end of message really, this time)

mistake #2: waiting to "get signed" before releasing anything. *sigh*. most australian bands have learnt NOTHING from the mistakes of history

seven months pass...
having seen them live and having listened to their (atrociously produced) EP, i'd say they're more like a dreamier version of PJ Harvey circa "Dress"..
