Motley Crue: god I love these fuckers!

"Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.)" and "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)" are two of my favoritist songs ever!!!

Granted, this is "late period" Motley Crue (haha - after they sold out), Bob Rock in tow, the whole frickin' nine yards. But goshdarnit are these not two of the greatest pop songs ever!! They are so good. Plus, I love the fact that both of them are parenthetically titled. For, like, no apparent reason. Like they totally didn't have to paranthetically title them, but they did! Kind of like James Brown!! OK, Bob Rock SUCKS!! In retrospect, Sonic Temple was a huge disappointment (even though I fuckin' hated Eddy for dissing it in Spin when it came out)(wait, WAS it Eddy? Who the hell did write that?), and about a month ago I actually sold my copy of the black album (!) - and I had this bad feeling that I would really miss the latter, but I've felt NO remorse. Anyway, everyone should download the two above-mentioned songs immediately (if, of course, you don't already have them)(and what the heck, get "Primal Scream" from the greatest hits thing - it's pretty hot too) and let's talk about the greatness of Motley Crue! Oh wait - I totally forgot to easily drop in the gratuitous way that "Kickstart My Heart" COMPLETELY rips off "Bad Motor Scooter" by Montrose!! I mean, anybody with a decent record collection and taste caught that reference already, right?

ditto!

Are those off Dr. Feelgood? That's about the time in my young life when I decided they sucked. Even then, I was smart enough to know "Girls, Girls, Girls" wasn't a song to be proud of. After rebuying Theatre of Pain, though, I realized how shitty that production is and the songs weren't so great, either. I had remembered it so much better.

I'm starting to fall into the Too Fast For Love camp. I really love that album, cowbell and all.

Scaredy cat (Natola), Monday, 21 July 2003 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Scaredy, from Feelgood. Yes, all the production is horseshit - but that's kinda the point of my thread; darnit, some of these songs TRANSCEND it!! And yeah man, Too Fast for Love is unassailable (actually, I know there's a thread in the archives about that one).

I mentioned it on another thread, but god I just LOVE the way Vince sings "That's alright, that's ok" on "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)".

It's like .. so resigned, so world-weary. Like, fuck it all, whatever. It's like Cobain. No difference between the two (and I'm not trying to pull some lame Klosterman thing here; I'm totally serious!! Fuck Klosterman. But I'm serious - when Vince goes "that's alright, that's ok" ... man, it makes my heart melt.)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 21 July 2003 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

there's actually a bit of turnaround to his phrasing, like it comes off worldweary resigned but reveals itself to actually be giddy and triumphant

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 21 July 2003 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm.. yeah you're probably onto it there, James. Huh; I guess I just wanted to imagine it being about him being all vulnerable and stuff. But yeah, it's probably more a declaration of triumph!! But still, it feels like he's more or less angrily dismissing this person out of neurotic spite..

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 21 July 2003 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Diamond, I meant Theatre was shitty production. I haven't heard Dr. Feelgood in over a decade, but I think the production was probably better than Theatre.

I like Motley Crue just fine. I think it was in the classical music thread that I referred to my ears as "Motley Crue listening devices". I also like Cinderella, Ratt and Faster Pussycat to some extent, but Poison must be shot (although, I fondly remember Look What the Cat Dragged In, I was already a hater by the time they made a 2nd album).

Bill was really thrilled to play the Troubadour the other night, because of the many exploits he read about in the Crue's autobiography thing....

I like "Bastard" a whole lot...do u Mr. D?

I always liked how you had a rock producer who was actually named "Bob Rock".

plus, points to the guy for being named after two verbs.

Vince Neil's performance this summer (opening for Poison) was really pretty enjoyable. He played almost all MC songs. His voice hasn't aged at all. The two songs you mention aren't really among my favourites though. I prefer "Too Young to Fall In Love" (had kind of a dark and intense quality in a way) and "Looks That Kill". The song "Dr Feelgood" isn't bad though.

Shout at the Devil will always be a favorite of mine, despite its inherent silliness.

Because of, surely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd probably like 'em more if Neil's voice didn't annoy me. All the Dr. Feelgood singles are ace.
