Which scruffy, acid drenched "scrunge" band do you prefer?
(also doubles as a Classic or Dud/Search and Destroy)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

When I saw P.W. Long a few years ago, he had the drummer from JL and the bassist from BS, so I don't have to choose.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The Jesus Lizard probably influenced more bands that I like, but Butthole Surfers seem much much scarier, so the latter.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

wouldn't Scratch Acid be the more comparable band vs. Buttholes? Both were crucial to post-hardcore drug-addled teen years in Texas...

abeta, Tuesday, 22 July 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Both are just fucking terrible. But the Buttholes win; I remember really liking Independent Worm Saloon when I was in 8th grade, and the Jesus Lizard has never done anything that I've liked ever.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

what about doing a T/S of their onstage antics?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Buttholes would win that by a mile I think. But TJL win on points nonetheless. Mainly because their major label albums don't sound tired and hackneyed. In my opinion, which I fear puts me in a minority among people who give a shit about this sort of thing.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

goat vs locust abortion technician is a tough one. i can't decide.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

If you judge them by their best albums, it's a tough pick. But if you judge them by their worst albums, Jesus Lizard wins hands-down. BHS have released some shitty, shitty albums.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I have heard only goat by JL and then locust abortion and rembrandt pussyhorse by the surfers.

If we are going to pick then it surely must be on their best recs (I don't know if they are really their best as i would have to listen to them all)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus Lizard by a texas mile.

ddb, Tuesday, 22 July 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

what about doing a T/S of their onstage antics?
Because the Butties would win just for the prostate surgery films alone.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

what about the firing of shotgun blanks into the audience?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The Butties wouldn't use blanks.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

what do you call Electric Larryland then?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

ouch.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Buttholes by far. No dis to the Lizard tho, they rule, but the Surfers are beyond reproach.

roger adultery, Tuesday, 22 July 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The Surfers are far from "beyond reproach." They've continued on way past their expiration date, with pathetically desperate grasps for commerical viability. They've always been interested in money over ethics (see Our Band Could Be Your Life), which I guess actually fits in with their aesthetic, but they also screwed over Touch and Go, which puts them easily within reproach for me. In fact, I reproach them right now. I REPROACH THEE!

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

take that surfers!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

if anything, Butthole Surfers were the first band that I realized could be awesome at the same time as being WELL WITHIN REPROACH.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that's what I mean. I think they're a great band, but they've done a lot of shitty things and released some pretty shitty music.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

just a bunch of reg'lar scumbags, both of 'em.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

and this is why we love them.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

with bats.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus Lizard is the better band but the Surfers have better stories, several in the aforementioned Our Band Could Be Your Life. Easily the funniest chapter in the book. Unless you still think Minor Threat is funny.

nonthings, Tuesday, 22 July 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to ask: does it matter if the band area assholes. I think when you prefer bands that are 'interested in money over ethics' you can work yourself into tight corners.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

depends. being an asshole is one thing, but being an asshole who fucks over your friends of many years is another thing altogether.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

this begins to take on a d & d quality ... 'lawful evil' assholes vs. 'chaotic evil' assholes ...

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus Lizard. I really enjoy bands who that are made up of musicians that are talented on their own, but really bring it to the table full-force as a unit. The Jesus Lizard is one of those rare special rock bands. Goat and Liar are classic. As for the Butthole Surfers, I had some friends growing up who loved them - I somewhat enjoy the Locust Abortion Technician album, but thats about it.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Ween vs. Beck.

Scaredy cat (Natola), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Even if you don't like their music the buttholes occasionally have a way with words. Just listen to interviews with Gibby, they are funny. He talks about "the predictions of 'Nostrildumbass'". And their side project is called "the Jackofficers." huh, huh, yeah Beavis. "Jackofficers". Jesus Lizard I have never heard, but I know what bands like them, and that makes me say uggh, I'll take the buttholes.

sucka (sucka), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

JACKOFFICERS RULE!!!

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

''depends. being an asshole is one thing, but being an asshole who fucks over your friends of many years is another thing altogether.''

but what's that to ppl who don't know them?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

if the jesus lizard had done a crosseyed p-funk disco house album like the buttholes then they would win.

bob snoom, Wednesday, 23 July 2003 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

is it better to fuck over people you know, or people you don't know?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, you shouldn't fuck over your friends. I believe Mr. Rusk learned his lesson.

Scaredy Cat, Wednesday, 23 July 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

no no, you FUCK your friends. you do not FUCK OVER them.

Fucking over people you don't know is a dodgy thing; fucking a stranger in the ass will probably result in your new sportscar getting its windshield bashed in.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless of course you both share the same cell. Then it's true love.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

fucking a stranger in the ass will probably result in your new sportscar getting its
windshield bashed in.

that sounds too specific to be hypothetical there Kingfish...some lessons are hard-learned, huh?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

some lessons are hard-learned, huh?

http://www.toptown.com/dorms/creedstonegate/movie/bigl2b.jpg

Yeah, remind me not to steal anybody's car in the future.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

six years pass...

.....but specifically live....
in 2009......
Both bands on tour this Fall.
My live show budget's stretched thin.
What to do?
Yow's still with JL yes? I'm leaning that way......

m0stlyClean, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 16:36 (sixteen years ago)

you're leaning the right way

pretzel walrus, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 16:51 (sixteen years ago)

Anyone seen the Butthole Surfers recently?

Soukesian, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 17:07 (sixteen years ago)

I did! They're great!

fuck plies IMO (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 17:32 (sixteen years ago)

The Jesus Lizard.
