Who could do a great film score but hasn't?

That soundtrack thread got me thinking about this...

Penty of musicians have tried, particularly in the last few years (Air, Jeff Tweedy, Dust Brothers, Badly Drawn Boy....)

Who could do it?

I think Godspeed and Mogwai are obvious.

Cinematic Orchestra (the name's a dead giveaway)

Amon Tobin would be my dream pick. I'd sit through a Bruckheimer flick if he'd score it.

Patton hasn't scored any films yet, but he did score a comic book.

i think it'd be interesting to see how sum41 or avril would be at doing a whole soundtrack score, not just a few rock and roll party moments, but instrumental moments.

i think it'd be cool to see someone unlikely and potentially incapable to compose a soundtrack. (do they write their own material?)

of course, it might suck hard.... but but but. and rule #1, the movie cannot ride on the band doing the music. none of this "AND SOUNDTRACK BY..." crap.

i bet you beck would do a decent job. as long as he didn't sing too much. that's the big challenge of giving the job to an artist who relies on vocals to a degree...

Patton scored a comic book? Tell me more...

The band Fantomas' first album was entirely composed by Mike Patton as a score to a French comic book starring a character named, surprisingly, Fantomas. The album seemed totally over-the-top to the point of stupid, until I read the comic book while listening to it.

im super excited about jonny greenwood's score of bodysong.
whether or not you like radiohead, he's apparently a big fan of both morricone and eno, and the man can make some truly beautiful sounds.

Felcher (Felcher), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Basement Jaxx, Super Furries, Dr Dre.

Nick H, Tuesday, 22 July 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if Grant Morrison's New X-Men character Fantomex was a nod to that (he was French).

Marilyn Manson actually did a pretty decent job on the Resident Evil score.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect the name is a pun on Phantom X. I doubt morrison is into Fantomas. He already admitted his fave record was "K" by Kula Shakur.

The clips on the site are quite good... They're only 10 second loops, but they're interesting. They wear their inspirations (Messiaen, Miles Davis, Paul Lansky, etc.) on their sleeves, but they're still quite beautiful.
Someone (possibly me? haha) should bug him more about a release date for the score, as I think its release is dependent upon whether or not he wants it released...

Eno's Apollo album was actually used as the score for the documentary For All Mankind in 1989. That album's "Ending (An Ascent)" was later used to marvelous effect in the closing scene of Soderbergh's Traffic.

turkey (turkey), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Eno's work on "For All Mankind" was *stunning* in the context of the documentary.
